Great post thanks, my father was employed at Baginton Coventry on the building of the Argosy. The men were on piecework, my dad made hand tools to speed up the cutting of the fuel fillers in the wing, which I now have. He served his time in the Fleet air arm on Corsairs 834 sq. He loved it at Coventry and the pay was some of the best in the area, as I suppose it should have been, employing some of the areas most skilled men.

A very graceful transporter, and wonderful memories at Benson.

I had the privilege of flying in one at RAF Brize Norton, I was a cadet in the ATC. 1979 if my memory is correct. We had some air turbulence, which made quite a few suffer air sickness. Which meant more food for me and the the ones who were not unwell. Great times

Many stationed at RAF Tangmere as I witnessed them landing with the two outer props feathered on final approach in 64 “ over the A27 also nicknamed “ The Wheelbarrow “

Development by Armstrong Whitworth on a shoestring using the obsolescent wing jigs of the Avro Shackleton and underpowered with those Darts. The AW-680 project, with four Tyne engines, and excellent STOL and short field performance should have been the Argosy. You get what you pay for.

I grew up close by to RAF Benson back in the 60s, the "Queens Flight" was based there then , in the charge of Air Commodore Blount, he was killed when a Wessex 5 ( i think ) of the Queens flight crashed on the way back from Westlands at Yeovil in late 60s. I can remember Argosy's flying over near our house interfering with the then black and white TV signal, think they were replaced by Hercs C130s and Andovers in the 70s , i think there's still a clubhouse on the base called The Argosy club , used to go to the air displays there to during the summers Red Arrows , lightnings flypast , Hawker Hunters as well very happy days .

Blimey you didn't know the Bain family did you? They lived in the houses at the end of one of the taxiways at the Ewelme end of the run way
