One minute and six seconds to one minute and ten seconds into the video he snickers at the opening words of the paragraph posted on 30 July 2023 "The Pointless Distribution manager has announced updated installation media for KDE Plasma, MATE and Xfce desktops." He might not know that the comment about "The Pointless Distribution manager" is inspired by the hate-mongering Chris Titus who made a "Linux Tier List" where he put PCLinuxOS (along with a bunch of other Linux distros) into a "POINTLESS" category. That video caused a little tempest in a teapot amongst PCLinuxOS users, but PCLinuxOS's benevolent dictator, Texstar, helped to minimize the importance of the categorization of PCLinuxOS as a "POINTLESS" distro by wearing that categorization as a badge of honour.
Chris Titus: a bloviating white windbag whose opinions about Linux distros should be taken at face value: BREEZY! (Hear Shania Twain in the background: "Okay, so you have an opinion about Linux. That don't impress me much. So you think you're a tech-god but have ya got the touch? Now don't get me wrong, yeah, I think you're all right. But that won't keep me warm in the middle of the night. That don't impress me much.")

I use PCLinux on a daily basis and am rather enamoured with it. 1 item you did not mention was the particular development group that I follow and use and that is Trinity Desktop Env. I believe they are a group from the Netherlands and I prefer to use their repositories as they are reliable and up to date. My system is a 4/5th gen core i5 with 8 gig RAM and soon to be added dedicated video proc. ( AMD ). The PC is an ASUS branded main board ( M32 ) with updated SSD on board. I am very well served by this group and the feature set is comprehensive. And in some regards " quirky & quaint " . Oh yes, also I use a wireless " nano " dongle from Edimax with no issues what so ever. Cheers.

what i like on pclinuxos is it has nosystemD init
it is light and i like it
      i also like their magazine
i like it has programs and the specific ones that are preinstalled
also i like it is rolling realease model and that they do not offer Gnome desktop (since it uses systemD and is bloat)
i do not like that they do not use sudo but you can install it yourself
the packages are not signed and this is a security concern and their forum needs your password to let you in and btw they won't let me in all times i tried to sign myself
although they are rolling release model they keep some old components i.e halt (i am ok with this but i can see some people wondering why)
last but not least you have to know that although they use apt rpm is used instead of dpkg and although they use sysVinit it works differently than the one on mxlinux, antix or devuan
conclusion: i would love to use this distro but they need to fix some important issues i.e signing their packages to use it with safety it's a good distro and it's a shame these minor thing prevent it form being again #1

MX Linux and AntiX are the only distros with such in-depth cloning of installs to create a new ISO installer. It actually uses APT to manage RPM format packages... Also, for the record, it's rolling-stable.

Far as a more boomer Linux distro I feel Solus Budgie fits that build as it's rolling release, as all they have to do is take system updates, and reboot if they don't install any additional software from the Solus software center after setup.
Far as PCLinuxOS the last time I gave it a go was around 2010, and at the time it did not wow me enough to move away from Mint Mate, and Windows 7 I was dual booting on my MSI Wind U230 Lite souped up netbook, and this build does not do it either to sway me from Manjaro GNOME, and Solus Budgie.

    • @TheYoungtrust
      @TheYoungtrust ปีที่แล้ว

There are no snaps in Linux Mint; it utilizes Ubuntu packages because they ensure optimal hardware compatibility and cover a wide range of software needs. The kernel can be easily upgraded through the update GUI to support newer hardware. The decision to stick with a slightly older kernel is primarily a design choice, aiming for stability over cutting-edge features. The project aims to minimize the likelihood of encountering bugs, aligning with the goal of providing a user-friendly experience.
As you might be aware, a version based on 'Bookworm' is expected to be released in a few months. Notably, the Debian-based version currently ships with Cinnamon as the default desktop environment. Of course, this can be customized according to your preferences. Additionally, there are discussions surrounding the creation of a Mint edition specifically tailored for brand new hardware.@@CommodoreFan64

I do think it is dangerous to generalise about people.
I am very much a "boomer" but I've been running Gentoo Linux as my one and only Linux distro for the past 20 years now - mainly because it's efficient, stable and I can build it to run well on everything from a Raspberry Pi Zero to a multi CPU Xeon server, plus I can do useful stuff with older hardware that I can buy cheaply now because "the zombie hordes" are sticking their old computers on eBay in order to purchase new ones for Windows 11.
I have been in the IT and cyber-security industry for a long time now and "old guys" like me are able to keep working because there are no youngsters coming up through the ranks to replace us in the First World due to a lack of interest in getting computer science and related degrees. The youngsters I train now are from places like India, Hungary and Argentina who are coming out of university with such degrees and have a good grounding in technology but need mentoring from the likes of me to show them how to put that knowledge to use correctly in industry.
Particularly in the First World, there is a shortage of computing skills across all of the generations, it's not just an "old person" thing - for example, some claim that there is a global shortage of more than 3 million cyber-security specialists that are needed to cope with demand for such skills.

@@terrydaktyllus1320 I agree that it crosses all generations, but after nearly 2 decades of working for a nonprofit that deals with various programs for seniors(60+), I've found over the years that about 90% of my clients have been clueless, or mostly clueless when it comes to technology in general, and when it comes to younger generations I find a fair amount know the basics in how to use it like a phone, tablet, or laptop, but don't really know what to do when something goes wrong, or even even how to plug in something as simple as a WiFi router, and how to configure it beyond the default settings, so personally think a basic computer coding class, and technology class should be required in all 1st - 12th grade schools, as I remember in the mid 80's when I started school it was drilled into our heads that we must know how to use a computer, and how they worked to succeed in life.

Interesting distro. You don't see that many indie (i.e. non-derivative) desktop distributions anymore. The main thing preventing me from PCLinuxOS is that it seems to bundle quite a bit of software that requires third-party account and/or being connected to the internet.

If you are talking about Chris Titus, you're wasting your time. He flip-flops to whatever opinions are "fashionable" to get as many views as possible - I gave up with his channel a couple of years ago (not that I ever learnt much from him anyway given I've been in the computing, IT and cyber-security industry longer than he has) but I'd rather sit and watch "youngsters" and other creators who have a passion for what they do rather than just looking to make money from it, even if I don't agree with a lot of what they say.
Unfortunately that's the problem with the TH-cam model - people start off with the right intentions, then content creation takes more and more of their time, then they look to make incomes from their work and then TH-cam has them all fighting (and making stuff up) for the small amount of its corporate profits that it hands out as monetisation. Titus got to that point years ago, now he just "prostitutes" himself for views, like so many others.

@@terrydaktyllus1320 I won't deny anything you said, I am not subscribed to him, but even a broken clock shows correct time twice per day. sure some distros titus called pointless, are not pointless at all, but this PCLinux is, at least nowadays

@@hoyteternal Whether or not PCLinux is "pointless" is of no relevance to me given I've never used it (Gentoo Linux user for 20 years now) - my comment was on the wisdom of using Chris Titus as an authority on computing-related topics, given his "change my opinion to shill views" attitude.

Worst distro name after Fedora. But I guess boomers use those search terms: "PC Linux OS"

A recent poll indicates the majority of PCLinuxOS users are in the 60,70 and 80 year old age groups.

I am a boomer, I have many computers, they all run Gentoo Linux and some FreeBSD and I guarantee you they are locked down and secure "tighter than a duck's chuff in Winter".
Don't generalise - it just reveals your true ignorance of the topic.
Most viruses and malware are spread by users visiting dangerous web sites and pirating software, like games. I'd argue it's the younger generations that probably do that anyway but are perhaps more "tech savvy" to keep their virus checkers on their Windows bloat up to date.
Unfortunately, those same younger people with Windows, Apple devices, Google Android on their phones and endless social media have precisely zero understanding of privacy, which to me is far worse than a few older people being scammed through malware alerts.

I wasn't impressed with PC Linux back in 2011 as in while in 2023, I'm not impressed now!
PC Linux is lame as lame can ever be! Gee, it sucks to be the PC Linux creator! I just need
to get this video out of my head.

So don't use it. Be an adult and let others be happy with what they want to do. I have no interest in it as a Gentoo veteran of some 20 years but if it works for others then more power to them.
