Different strokes, eh? I was just thinking to myself how wonderful it was to see a free and easy, natural appearing performance. Instead of "OK, let's stop acting the scene because I'm going to sing an aria now", the music comes as a natural extension of the scene. Yes, it is more "conversational" in timbre and (as Pisaroni himself says "color"), shading into American Musical Theater, but I think that is a choice, and a choice that is just as appropriate as any other. Opera emphasizes the music over the libretto, musical theater vice versa, but there is no rule book for exactly where to draw that line. I prefer a balanced, total experience approach in a live staging, otherwise why not simply give a concert performance? But that is just a preference on my part, I don't think there is any "correct" way to approach this work.
