Great video. In the fall, we upgraded our 60Ah rex to 94Ah (5500,- EURO) and our 60Ah BEV to 120Ah (8000,- EURO), so it can be done. My impression is that it's a fairly straight forward procedure and that coding can be the tricky part. Our workshop used about 3 hours on a swap. It's really a shame BMW dosen't offer this service, but I guess they rather sell you a new car.
Hi Frode, I used a workshop in Liturania, Ego motors, which I read about on a German forum. I did not upgraded charging; I do not need it and to do it, I think you need to change many parts like socket, cable, EME etc.
BMW have manual! All BMW i dealerships are capable of this job. It's been done in Germany by dealers. However in UK dealerships are franchised and prefer to sell new lease. But long term EV sustainability is key. Lots of salvaged packs in future which are not properly recycled. 95% of lead acid batteries are recycled. 95% of lithium based ones are NOT!
I currently own a 2019 e-Golf with a VERY high spec. It was an Ex-Demo car. LIke yourself I have invested in the car quite a lot (Eibach Pro spring kit, 18" wheel upgrade, de-chrome, de-badge, PPF front half of car. I like you have invested a lot in the car and although this is a pain if I was to change the car in 3yrs when the finance is finished. I would actually like to keep the car for longer as I think the 7.5 is a better quality car than the new Mk8 and as for the ID3 I think it is a glorified VW UP. all plastic and coloured metal parts. I also feel it such a waste to change my car because the battery will have degraded (in 3yrs I will have over 100,000 miles on my car as I cover 26k per year) I have posted my question if people know of battery enlargement or swapping companies like MUXAN do for Nissan, and people seem to rip me apart. Telling me to just change the car.
Not sure if there is a part number of the whole pack, I did search on koed BMW and didn't find it as a part. But this is rather something you find by searching for "BMW i3 94Ah battery pack". Just make sure to search for 94Ah and not 90Ah.
Little precision: As I understood it, the ''hidden menu'' shows the total capacity (22,2 kwh as new) and *not* the net useable (18,8), same for the 94ah which is 33,2 new (as per Bmw specs). So a reading of 16.0kwh means it remains 72% of life battery.
Also, in CANADA, the cost for a 94ah module is 5115$ plus taxes, not installed.... and PER module. You need 8 of them. So a little more sane solution would be much appreciated.
How about creating a club bringing together all those who want to do the battery upgrade (and why not directly up to 120ah). Then Identify a BMW dealer (or an engineer willing to fly around EU to implement for individuals). And then even imagine ending up with 120ah/REX, the best of both worlds..
Well, since its a Swedish car that wasn't relevant. But since the new battery had almost the same weight (+50kg or so) I never did any official documentation of this with the government. I can't remember if I called the agency for transportation here but I'm pretty sure a battery swap like this is ok. No problems with the two yearly vehicle checkups after the swap. Passed them both. Even with the aftermarket Hitch.
Hello from Russia! Dreaming on the same swap. Do you think a remote (over internet) coding is feasible if I do a mechanical part on my own? Thanks for great video
Hi, Did you only need to change the battery? What about the battery charger (OBC) and the Battery heater/ cooler, can you use the old one? And are there any other pieces you need to change?
The only thing that I bought and brought to bmw was the batterypack. They did order a new lid for it though as it was in the manual, to replace it as it was removed for an inspection. The charger, heater and all such is still the same as before the swap.
The 60Ah-i3 only had a slower charger, i think it was a two phase charger that also could work as a single phase charger. They changed this with the introduction of the 94Ah battery.
I’m sure the battery is replaceable on the 740Le, but not sure if it needs coding or who could do it. Check if there is a fb group for that or with a BMW workshop/ technician.
I'm about to buy a 2015-2017 bmw i3. do you know how long these battery's last until you need a new battery. Also will the battery be at 60% or so after 100,000 miles?
Bmw warranty approved replacement of battery bmw I3 bev 2014 .the problem they have installed the new battery but the car don’t recognise the new battery .Any thoughts ?
Thank you so much for your time to make such a good Video. I made a trip with my I3 120 from Cologne to nearly Salzburg. It was not so easy. Do you know companys in germany who can improve the battery ?
It all depends on your price for electricity, and that can vary a lot depending on country and region. You should be able to see your electrical price in your electrical bill, then multiply the price per kWh with how many kWh's that your car needs per time. My electrical price in Stockholm, Sweden is 1.24 SEK/kWh, that is 0.12 Euro/kWh. If I come home with 10% and charge to 100% then I'd need 27 kWh (plus efficiency losses). 27kWh * 0.12 Euro = 3.24 Euro to charge to full, in my example. If we add 10% for losses then we get 3.56 Euro.
Now I'm getting about 210-230km per charge. The highest I've seen so far is about 250km on the guess-o-meter and it seems to show a true estimate. Charging is also faster since it now tapers off the charging current at about 85%.
Thank you. The community gains so much from videos like yours. Really cool that you’re answering these questions
I been looking for this video for years.
I wanna do that in the states.

Oh thats a really good deal on both! Hope this gets more easily available soon.
Hey Mads,Where did you buy the parts? did you only upgrade the battery or also the charging?
Hi Frode, I used a workshop in Liturania, Ego motors, which I read about on a German forum. I did not upgraded charging; I do not need it and to do it, I think you need to change many parts like socket, cable, EME etc.
That price is already amazing and considering battery prices are going down and capacity is growing Wes te in for a beautiful EV future!
Mads link from that shop please , I'm in europe so it may be done ...
Very informative and interesting, thank you for taking the time to show us.
Good information for us i3 owners
I have changed battery from 60 to 94 ah, total cost 4000€ 😊👌
Where? if I may ask..
@@KoenBroumels was here in Norway:)
@@shazad1984 More specifically. Which dealer or shop and where was the job done? Takk
Einar Kjerschow not a dealer. But some bmw specialist i know:)
Can you share details?

Thanks Bjorn, nicely explained. We are considering to do the same, keeping the i3 as a second car.
So whishe after market battery upgrades were the norm. I have a 94Ah 2017 Rex and would totally swap up! Enjoyed the video
Great video. Thx a lot! hopefully, some good engineers could import the 2nd hand battery and do it here in Thailand.
Thank you for the information sir.

120ah/Rex are sold in the US. Maybe gather interested people to import it to Europe?
how did you upgrade your iDrive?
Thank you! I search a possibility for a bigger accu since i got my own bmw i3 60Ah...

Can you remove a REX?
Any updates? Price etc..
Bavaria Tyresö borde kunna detta och ha en deal på detta.

Thanks, very useful. Aren’t all BMW i3 variants are fitted with an 11 kW on-board charger for AC charging?

Hi B, do you know of any garages in the Uk that might be able to upgrade from 94ah to 120 ah on my i3 Rex (2018)
No sorry I don't.

As I remember the new modules have a number that have to be coded into the car for the car to recognize the battery. That’s the only idea I have.

If you go with Octopus energy they do a night time tariff of 5pence per kWh so that would be about 90pence
Do you have a phone number for the dealer that coded your battery SME?

@@BasinBjorn , yes, the improved fast charging is a real bonus on longer trips.
Much cheaper and more reliable to just sell old i3 and upgrade to a new i3 with better battery….simple.
