I would like to point out that even in the U.S. you can find yourself carjacked, kidnapped, raped, etc. in certain areas and even in more affluent areas. In NYC in certain areas you will find people selling drugs to any passerby, same thing happens in Puerto Vallarta. The main factors of crime across the board are economic disparity, opportunity, and education.

As a mexican who had a cousin working in the cartel of Sinaloa, I can tell that it's hard to explain, it's really rare to see foreigners getting like kidnapped? They only take the ones that own them money, scammed them, hurt any member or if you are a beautiful woman looking for drugs. And they actually treat really good the US tourist (1.- Cuz they don't understand spanish 2.- They are "customers") They call themselves "Justicieros" (Like some sort of Vigilante or Justice Force) and tend to protect the native people and help in natural disasters.

I would like to point out that even in the U.S. you can find yourself carjacked, kidnapped, raped, etc. in certain areas and even in more affluent areas. The suburbs are riddled with drug dealers just like “ghettos”. The only difference is that they aren’t heavily policed because of lower gang activity. Mexico is no different.
In NYC in certain areas you will find people selling drugs to any passerby, same thing happens in Puerto Vallarta. The main factors of crime across the board are economic disparity, opportunity, and education.
