Thanks Amanda! At the time the show was filmed I had been quilling about five years. The nice thing is that it honestly doesn't take very long to learn how to quill. I've seen very beautiful things people have made who have only been at it a short while. As long as you have examples, paper, tool, glue, and patience you're pretty much set!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Typical quilling paper is fairly lightweight, not cardstock. It needs to be able to roll smoothly. Cut practice strips from computer paper and use a stiff wire as your tool. It helps to dampen your fingertips to get the paper to grip the wire and start the coil. If you find you enjoy quilling, then you can purchase 'real' strips and tools. Craft stores usually don't stock a good variety, so google online suppliers instead.
That's great mrlundgren, most children enjoy quilling. Here's an idea for teaching really young kids to quill - use bread bag or trash bag twist ties that have a wire embedded. Older students do fine with regular quilling paper or they can make giant-sized snowflakes with wide strips - a half inch or so. Regular computer paper works fine. Roll the strips on a wooden dowel.
wow i really wanted to learn this art and you made it easy for me! i am planning to gift my friend a card on which im going to quill as taught by you!!!
Very nice video. I especially appreciated the way you described each step while demonstrating as well giving the neames of the various parts of each project. To be honest, the music was a little loud in comparison to your voice so I had to turn you up but then was blasted when you stopped talking and the music returned. But overall, the video was very informative. I saw a curling tool on a crafting sale site and didn't know what quilling was, so I came to YT and found your video...I'm glad I did. Thank you for sharing!
le2ce, I ordered my favorite tool from Japan, but when I was first learning to quill, I used a cake tester - it's a fine, stiff wire. Some prefer to use corsage pins or cocktail sticks. That's a Fiskars paper trimmer you see me using in the video... it's very handy for cutting strips from a sheet of paper.
Thanks! The paper I'm using is standard quilling paper, 1/8 inch wide. American quilling strips are about 22-24 inches in length. The weight is slightly heavier than typical computer printer paper, but that will work fine if you want to cut a sheet into strips to use as practice paper.
It truly is simple once you've practiced a bit - it's just paper and glue after all. :) Everyone feels like they have ten thumbs at first! Michaels seems to carry quilling supplies off and on, but I believe Joann's, Hobby Lobby, and ACMoore all carry them. There's a much bigger selection at online quilling supply sites.
I'm glad you liked it. Yes, it would be perfect for Girl Scouts. Young girls (and boys too actually!) enjoy quilling. There's a book/kit in the Klutz series called Twirled Paper that has wonderful designs for children - it might give you some ideas.
Hi Michelle, thank you. The strips can be whatever width you like. Typical quilling paper is 1/8 inch wide, but quilling can be done on any scale - smaller or larger. This is my only video - so far anyway!
Thanks! I used a Fiskars 12" Personal Paper Trimmer, but I think that particular model has been discontinued. Hopefully you can still find one for sale somewhere - it's a nice, portable cutter.
Thanks Garette. If you can't find quilling supplies, substitutes can be made pretty easily. If you check my blog, www.allthingspaper.net, you'll find a tab at the top of the page for Quilling FAQ with lots of tips on getting started.
Thank you for sharing! I discovered quilling quite recently but I cannot find quilling tools here in Greece. I guess I need to order them. The tool you are using for cutting the strips is it also for quilling? How do you call it? Thanks a lot!
love your detailed work...but you never mention how long your pieces of strips/paper are that you use for each design..that would be very helpful for us beginners...beautiful work!!!!
Thanks Tim! Here's the link to my blog post that includes everything you need to know about making the poinsettia: www.allthingspaper.net/2009/12/thats-clever-video-quilled-poinsettia.html
I don't see the wreath you and merry bee were talking about but awesome video! Can you tell me where to get those tools? I can't find them:( Looking forward to your response,

Merry Christmas & all the best for the new year!
I love the "sixties-style" of this kind of crafting! :D
It remembers me of the sixties and seventies......

I really liked this video. Thank you for posting! Beautiful cards.
Great video. We've shared it on our Quilling article on Bubblegum Post today. Thanks!
Sophie, you can use any glue that's suitable for paper and dries clear. At the moment my favorite is Martha Stewart Crafts: All Purpose Gel Adhesive.

maddj24, thanks; it's called a quilling needle tool. Any stiff piece of thin wire can be substituted, but the handle makes it more comfortable to use.
Hi Merry, I made the dried flowers wreath that's to my left, but not the Christmas-y one behind me.
Beautiful, I live in Wilmington, DE also... Great Job, everything is looking lovely!!!!!!
