  • This is a complete startup guide following the checklist for pre-start, startup, run-up, and shutdown procedures in the Robinson R44 Raven II helicoper. We cover the differences between starting the Lycoming IO-540 when cold versus warm. The Robinson checklist does not cover these differences. It is extremely important to hold the throttle past idle in full detent when initiating the starter when the engine is still warm, and continuing to hold it in detent until the rotor system has loaded the engine. Holding the throttle in full detent disengages the correlator and the governor, preventing revving to too high of an idle or RPMs when starting. When warm, the engine may tend to idle relatively high or over-rev upon startup. If the RPMs would get too close to 80% (where the governor begins to takeover throttle control) the governor could over-rev or over speed the engine. Although there are adjustments that can be made in maintenance to help prevent this, this practice should always be used. Failure to do so could lead to loosening of the cooling fan nut which attaches the lower shaft assembly.
