People tend to forget what a great guitarist Sammy is. He’s doing all the heavy lifting live while Ed is playing keys. It fortified a different sound than what they had with Dave.
Don't get me wrong, I love this more than stuff with laptops and backing tracks, but this is also nothing wrong with that stuff - it just isn't for you or me, and that's ok.
Damn THIS album WAS the "Summer of '86" . . . what a great time to be 15 years old with this cassette tape on my Sony Walkman AND riding my "Hutch Trickstar" BMX 💯 😎 👍 😍
I had a friend who was always one step ahead of me on VH. I was sitting in home room 1986 and our morning show was about to end. My buddy was the camera man and audio guy. All of a sudden I hear the keyboard intro to WCTBL. I had no idea that he had recorded the single on FM radio. As soon as I heard the keyboard, I looked at my friend Thad and said, this is the new Van Halen. I just knew it. It blew me away. I spent the Summer of 1986 listening to Van Halen, drinking beer, driving back roads, and getting laid for the first time.
Agreed. Much better than with David. Sammy was often overshadowed by Eddie's playing but seeing this you realize just how good he was. Singing and playing.
Van Halen with DLR was a hard rock band. Van Halen with Sammy Hagar was a pop rock band. To each his own, I guess. Van Hagar was never heavy enough for my tastes.
I was at this show, 15 years old and my first REAL concert. The crowd was soooo loud. We were on stage right, Mikes side ,10 rows off the floor with the PA Just above us .... WHAT A SOUND.
The Sammy Hagar years being Van Halen's peak is a hill I will gladly die on. It doesn't get any better than when it was Sammy, Eddie, Alex, and Michael in my estimation
I’ll be seeing Sammy this year. I heard he’s doing a ton of Van Halen music with Joe satriani. Satch is excited. So am I hope Eddie is rocking out to the huge tribute that is gonna be held for him. This whole summer rock out with Sammy.
For me, it was a summer in Poland during a great economic crisis, huge inflation and the collapse of our occupier, the USSR - we were waiting for better times. But I was 17 years old and happy. summer is the same everywhere. ;)
This live performance absolutely DESTROYS the album release solely due to Alex's drums. They're so much louder here and they drive the song so well. Can't get enough of this.
When Sammy joined VH they became a juggernaut. Watching this and seeing Eddie happily playing keys while letting Sammy playing Eddie on guitar brings a smile to my face. And yes, Sammy is a damn good guitar player.
All in all, it was management that brewed the bad blood between the bad members because everything seemed that they could operate even with their frictions and such. According to Wolfvang before Eddie died a grand reunion of VH was planned with David, Mike and Sammy, to let all the bad blood behind. But, given how much is David shit talking Wolf, that wouldn't have happened either way XD
Don't know if he did it during the whole tour, but I was there when Leslie West came out & played a few songs with BTO. Didn't expect that, but was happy it happened.
there was the idea that Leslie would become a new member of BTO, but it didn't really work out. He only played a few dates with us. I loved working with him - he was awesome, but (partially because Randy and Timmy Bachman were mormons, and Leslie was a bit of a partier) it didn't end up being a good fit. Cool that you saw one of those shows, and then found this post. Feel free to check my channel. There's a playlist called Evidence of Noise, where I've uploaded some concert stills and footage from that tour....
They opened this tour here in Shreveport, Louisiana. Valerie’s family lived here at the time. I graduated from high school with her brother Pat. Great Times, great memories!
What an awesome album. Alex playing Simmons drums, Eddie playing Oberheim and Steinberger, Sammy wearing headphones and Michael being Michael. pushing the edge of Rock and Roll.
I first heard "Why Can't This Be Love" when played by my local station the day it was released it in early 1986. I was like "Damn- a classic right out of the gate".
It is impossible for a dolt to not opine and complain that someone referenced God in passing. Just to make you complain more: 'Forbes: Remembering A Guitar God: A Conversation With Eddie Van Halen [Oct 6, 2020] Steve Baltin: Did you always feel a special kinship with music? Eddie Van Halen: Every idea that the man upstairs gives me I have the pain in the ass job of, “Okay, god, what are you gonna lay on me next?” Because he lays stuff on me, then I gotta figure out how to make it work, which is not easy... '
Another great job. This was such a great show and it was the same when seeing it live back in the day. I think I still have my 5150 tour shirt in our Garage.... LOL
Anything from this tour shows the pure joy they're experiencing playing with each other...always puts a smile on my face! Thanks VH and CCF for the upscale!
Yeah, the sub basement. Hagar may be able to sing higher (and higher, sraight up he'll climb) but so wha? That don't mean jack. Van Hagar is a bunch of boring AOR synth love songs with a couple of decent ockers thrown in here and there. Get Up is pretty cool. Finish what ya started is kinda cool faux country. Nothing much else from Van Hagar comes close to standing side by side with anything from the first 4 VH albums. It's not even as good as Diver Down FFS.
Sammy is so freaking cool. And besides, the balls it takes to get up and play guitar in concert in front of EVH. You know you're gonna get compared to him and there's just no comparison.
Van Halen w Dave was amazing!! Dave was and is the best frontman ever! BUT, live his vocals sucked after 3 songs, Sammy brought the live performance to another level because he could sing a whole concert perfectly and play the guitar very well! I really wish they could have stayed together. Don’t get me started on how awesome Mike Anthony is!!!
Eddie's first love of piano playing was allowed to be re-explored and further evolved with Sammy acting as guitar player. In many respects, all the planets aligned again with an undeniable chemistry for building songs together as Sammy was also the primary lyrical composer for the band at the time. Facts.
Sammy Hagar has had a stellar Career in the music industry. Starting with Montrose and then having a successful solo career before even joining the Van Halen Brothers for this version of the band and Michael Anthony has played longer with Sammy then he ever did with Van Halen. And Sammy has recorded with multiple other musicians to this day. HSAS. Hagar . Schon. Arranson. Shrieve. Joe Satriani. Jason Bonham. He has his own club in cabo san lucas . his own brand of tequila. His own band the WABORITAS. Geez what more can you do in your life . Oh well before Sammy Hagar ever decided to pursue music as a career he was a professional boxer trying to follow in the footsteps of his father. Sammy Hagar had a tough life growing up in Monterey California. His Father was a boxer who tried and failed to make the big time and started drinking and was abusive to both Sammy and his Mother. . Sammy Hagar is a true legend.
People tend to forget what a great guitarist Sammy is. He’s doing all the heavy lifting live while Ed is playing keys. It fortified a different sound than what they had with Dave.
Excellent, love the Sammy era!
He is playing mostly basic bar chords…hardly “heavy lifting”. Eddie is carrying the song here.
@@cerd6292 and here comes the expert to piss in everyone’s pint . Hooray for you sir ! No politely fuck off 🖕🏻
I believe Sammy was at the absolute peak of his vocal prowess here. Just killing it. 😎
@@cerd6292 and singing in tune, and dancing, and moving and owning the crowd,
What a crazy concept: no backing tracks or laptops, just talent.
Grandes bandas como pink floyd, genesis, gnr y muchisimas mas han usado laptops y backing track, hay algunas cosas que si o si se necesitan.
its called music.....
That is right. And all.
Yes
Don't get me wrong, I love this more than stuff with laptops and backing tracks, but this is also nothing wrong with that stuff - it just isn't for you or me, and that's ok.

The good ol' days
I'm pretty sure we had the last great decade. We had it all. But most importantly, we had the best rock music.
17 years old - same vibe. ;)
В СССР он тоже был популярен у Молодежи но Его не крутили по радио а стоил как 50% от Зарплаты в Месяц !

This hands down the best version of VH!! Michael Anthony is the unsung hero of VH his backing vocals are the gravy on the meat!!
0:11 That is a professional beer throw by whoever that roadie was! Spot on..lol
hell yea it was
Yeah fine pickup
It was Stone Cold Steve Austin’s beer thrower.
holy shit
Anthony is like "BEER ME!"
Van Halen was great with Sammy Hagar, and this song is a great example.
Agreed. Much better than with David. Sammy was often overshadowed by Eddie's playing but seeing this you realize just how good he was. Singing and playing.
Sammy actually tried to sing. They made great records during the Roth era, but he was also their albatross.
the Hagar years were Van Halen's peak. when he left in '96, that was it and the band never truly recovered
OMG, I used to watch this show in VHS video hundreds times 35 years ago. It is incredible to watch this in 4K now! Let me buy a coffee.
I still have my VHS somewhere
Sammy Hagar's live singing/playing/moving around is up there with the best
Watch the video noone is singing
The Sammy Hagar years being Van Halen's peak is a hill I will gladly die on. It doesn't get any better than when it was Sammy, Eddie, Alex, and Michael in my estimation
Sammy had a world class set of pipes. VH at its finest before everything turned toxic.
I’ll be seeing Sammy this year. I heard he’s doing a ton of Van Halen music with Joe satriani. Satch is excited. So am I hope Eddie is rocking out to the huge tribute that is gonna be held for him. This whole summer rock out with Sammy.
Sammy really showed us all how good he is at multitasking, brought so much stuff to Van Halen
Took me right back to the Summer of 86 blasting it on the balcony overlooking Myrtle Beach with my friends.
For me, it was a summer in Poland during a great economic crisis, huge inflation and the collapse of our occupier, the USSR - we were waiting for better times.
But I was 17 years old and happy. summer is the same everywhere. ;)
Hell ya!!
Sammy is a national treasure.
So much joy in this performance. This iteration of Van Halen had amazing chemistry and stage presence.
5150 is such a legendary album
Dreams love walks in best of both worlds summer nights 5150 and this are classics
Get up! My favourite song of all time.
His vocals are freaking incredible and playing guitar as well!!
this is backed ... dont you see ?
And people say rock is dead....this is timelessss
Wolfie is keeping this vibe alive, friend. He's incredible.
Been watching and listening to these dudes for about 40 years now…. Never gets old!
Like someone mentioned below, this was watched religiously at my house in VHS format. It;s one of the best concert video performances ever captured!
ANOTHER OF MY 20 BEST SONGS FROM THE 80s. This song is the injection we all need,..........High up !!! Van Halen at its best
This live performance absolutely DESTROYS the album release solely due to Alex's drums. They're so much louder here and they drive the song so well. Can't get enough of this.
0:50 i like how eddies guitar thats probably worth millions of dollars is just laying on the ground in the background
Van Hagar really was amazing. Look how much fun Eddie is having and how badass Sammy is.
Wow, what a sound. Thank you, Ed and Sammy.
When Sammy joined VH they became a juggernaut. Watching this and seeing Eddie happily playing keys while letting Sammy playing Eddie on guitar brings a smile to my face. And yes, Sammy is a damn good guitar player.
Eddie really wanted to be seen as a well rounded musician and not just a guitar player, and Sammy allowed him to have the freedom to express himself.
All in all, it was management that brewed the bad blood between the bad members because everything seemed that they could operate even with their frictions and such. According to Wolfvang before Eddie died a grand reunion of VH was planned with David, Mike and Sammy, to let all the bad blood behind.

Wolfies more mature than Dave !
I worked every date of the 5150 tour in 1986, in BTO, the opening act.....great to find this video.....takes me back....

Damn, those live vocals by Hagar.
I think this is one of those where even Hagar himself admitted that they re-recorded the vocals in a booth.

That keyboard player's pretty good. I wonder if he plays any other instruments?
I think he plays the electric drill as well.
One day we will get an official 4k remaster of LWAN. Until then, Crosscut Films is doing the Lord's work.
