otter can make you pull your hair out . try some blind sets with no bait or lure where they are going under the snow / ice spots in the creek with 220's or 330's . whatever you can legally use . most otters are caught in blind pinch points in trails than in baited sets .
Amen to what judith and Dan says. I'd just add one thing. Be patient. I once kicked an otter out of their bank den, set a 330, and ended up waiting at least a week for him to come back. In my area they run a circuit and I've even heard it once said to set on old otter sign because they'll come back soon. You'll catch. Just be confident and you're patience will pay off.
Good to see a new video Mark and good to see you finally got some snow! As for the Mission Impossible Otter....haha....the only guys I've ever seen have good luck on otters are those trapping beaver and muskrat (they actually don't want the otters) but they ALWAYS get the otters in the water. The only other thing I can think of is if you put in some sets like Camo Cowboy does for mink. Good luck!
Thanks brother! It's a very small creek that they just pass through and not deep enough to drown them! I'll keep trying! Thank you for all your support my friend!
They are slippery lil things. Took me about a month and half to catch my first 1. I ended up using otter lure ( Cavens or Fox hollow) in a side beaver channel. The trap was in the channel, the lure on a stick where the water got shallower as the the channel ended. In this stream of yours, I would try to block off a large area by pulling the grasses up, so they have to go through the water, and place a couple 330s inside that narrowed area. You could put 2 traps say 6 feet apart, and put otter lure on a stick, stuck in the bottom to where enough stick is above so they can smell it well. Might double up if lucky. What is your take limit?
Thank you for the great info my friend! We can take 5 a season here in Illinois! I just want to catch one lol!! I really appreciate your comment and support my friend!!
Hello Brother, I've always found that it's hard to get a Otter to stick their head in a box. I've caught several over the years. Just not trying for them now because they're not worth much and they're a lot of work to do up, but I've found they are easy to catch with a trail set. If you can find a pinch point where they are traveling on the land. Try and pull up the grass on both sides of their trail . Set a 280 or 330 on it with the grass pulled up on each side. Hide the trap with the grass. I've caught quite a few that way. Good luck my Friend
Thank you for your great ideas brother! I'm going to try a few things! The weather keeps warming up so it's hard to know where they are traveling! Good luck with everything my friend!
That bucket set looks good, especially covered in snow. You said coyote season is almost over, but I bet you will catch that otter before long. Keep after them buddy!
Ya I'm pulling the coyote sets this weekend but now it's raining and the otter sets are all under water lol! This weather!! Thank you for watching brother!!
The box is a great idea but I would turn the traps so the triggers are down and put it under the snow bridge in the water. If possible, for bait I would use some type of native fish like small bluegill and tie it between the rebar. They have great noses but are more of a sight hunter like bobcats.
I'm trying everything just hope it comes back through! The snow bridges are going to be gone it's warming up again! I made a pocket set today and set some more 330s! Thank you for watching and supporting brother!!
That would be so cool if you caught that otter. You sure are determined buddy. After what you accomplished last year I know you're gonna get that otter. One way or another. What you're doing looks good to me. That was a good idea with joining the 2 buckets together.👍🏻

Try blind foothold in that trail. Doesn't matter how smart they are, they can't outsmart what they can't see. Also, with your otter boxes, try putting them in the water. I have good luck with them in the water. I mount the bucket to a stake, and submerge the bucket half way. They are way more apt to stick their head in that bucket if its in the water. Good luck, they are tricky critters!

@@MarkJLarsonOutdoors even better, if they aren't getting out of the water, plug that thing with 280's and 330's. I always make at least 3 otter sets per location, I often see them in groups of 3-5

Hey man, you have a fantastic opportunity for them, otter. Drop your 330s in the creek where it chokes down coming and going. Have the 330 totally underwater. Place a dive log over the conabair. If you want to catch him on land, use a walk through trail set, lure with castor. It would be fantastic if you could find their toilet and set a foot hold where they enter and exit the water. Just put a blind set in the water at each spot with absolutely no blocking stixs and I guarantee you that you will have an otter the next time he tries going threw!! Thank you for the advice my friend! I did catch him and actually caught a second one at a different location and have videos of both! There are very cool critters! I really appreciate you watching and supporting buddy!
You will get him, I always like playing those games with them once I win! I second the dirt hole. Very same as you would for a coyote. Just closer to the water where you know they are coming through. If you find their toilet that would be perfect spot for a dirt hole. Try digging a big pocket in the side of the ditch as well bated with any predator bait/lure with a conibear guarding the entrance. I believe it might help as well to paint the bucket dark or use dark colored box.
I already put in a pocket set with a foot trap where he came out from under the ice and going to put in a few more conibears where it pinches down! They don't live there they just pass through so I don't think I'll find a toilet! It's a very small ditch! Thank you for all your help and support my friend!
@@MarkJLarsonOutdoors I don't know how much of the ditch you have access to but if you can follow it to a culvert or road crossing in either direction, there will be a path (crossover over the top of it). 280's in pinch points will eventually connect. If you are using 330's pay attention to trigger placement. The odds of a hip catch are high. That looks like just 1 otter, the same otter , and that's his home area!! Hes obviously educated , I use Buffalo heads for bait here in Louisiana and catch them in foothold in the water cubby set, I built some boxes using 2 milk crates this season but haven't caught an otter in them yet only because of rain and weather issues flooding 8 inches of rain at atime you know. I would use a # 11 in a cubby set in the water edge
Awesome stuff Mark, I’d like to give you some advice but I know next to nothing about otters but I’m like you, throw everything you can come up with at them and see what happens, I can’t wait to see if you get one 👍👍
@Mark J Larson Outdoors 👍 if he continues to avoid 330s that's probably what I'd do. By using a drowner it puts them in the water and they can't seem to fight the trap quite as much and if they do get exhausted they can drown in fairly shallow water
Those racoons are pesky, I figured you would get a few in your traps. I think you're smart to put the buckets parallel to the stream I think they'll be more likely to go in. I don't know what Illinois regulations are, I know some Canadian guys put a shiny 6 in jerk bait in the bucket to attract otters, could do something like that if it's allowed! Good luck buddy!
Did you give it a thought yet to set up trail cams and see the otter's movements around the area of the water? It's just an hairbrained idea. Good luck Mark and I hope my suggestion might help you out a little.
I haven’t read all the comments and I’m sure someone has mentioned this already, but I’ve only been successful with otter in completely submerged 330’s and 1.5 foot holds in their travel ways…good luck.
Where he is going under the snow in the water. Put a 280 or 330. Set several of them up and down it. Area's where he came out before on land use a foothold. I have caught a few in buckets. I think u would be better off blind setting for him. I caught 14 last yr in just belisle 220's. I snared, blind set, dirt hole and 330 them too. If u can find a otter slide on a high bank. That is a hot spot. I fount one spot. That 1 220 took 7 otters. I built some cages like a live trap. But i use a 220 in each in. I been playing around with it. I hang them just under the water with current. Have to find a place. That has a limb over the water. In the middle inside the cage. I take a 3 d sun fish bass lure. Cut the hooks off. Use fishing line to tie lure in place. That current makes that lure alive. Otters can see thru the wire cage. It works for me better than the buckets. The cage takes place of the bucket. 2 yrs ago i set a crossover. I put 4 traps in it. I put a snare snare 220 ant then a snare. The next morning. First 3 traps had otters. The last snare was pulled down. Reset them and the next morning .That snare i had pulled down had a otter. I had made my loop too big. I use a #5 trap on drowning rods some. But dont think twice about dry land catching one. Just have several swivel points. I run 3 swivels on them. I have caught alot in blind sets in 1.5 coil. Like trails running along the water. I fount some otter sign coyote trapping. Only traps i had with me. Was a Bridger #2 offset dogless 4 coil modified. I caught a otter in it on a dirt hole. I put it out by his toilet. Otters isnt hard too catch. I do use otter lures some. Best bait is catfish head or meat. I have fount they like chewing on catfish heads.. Or some type of fresh fish. That #11 is a good otter trap too. If u could use a snare or cable restrains. There good to set where there entering or exiting the water. Good luck.
Thank you for all the great information my friend! We cannot use snares and the water isn't deep enough to drown them! So I think the body traps may be my best bet! I really appreciate you taking the time to help brother!!
@@MarkJLarsonOutdoors i used wolf fang or pogo's on my dirt hole for otters. Also when i blind set for them. U can catch them in a foothold. When i set a otter toilet. U will hold in a foothold. When u set away from water. Some of the otter lures i use. Predator Control Group otter. Cavens otter supreme, Dunlap otter and Fox Hollow torpedo. Crawfish oil works on them.

Hes obviously educated , I use Buffalo heads for bait here in Louisiana and catch them in foothold in the water cubby set,
I built some boxes using 2 milk crates this season but haven't caught an otter in them yet only because of rain and weather issues flooding 8 inches of rain at atime you know.
I would use a # 11 in a cubby set in the water edge
That's a great idea! Thank you my friend I'm going to try that!!
Awesome stuff Mark, I’d like to give you some advice but I know next to nothing about otters but I’m like you, throw everything you can come up with at them and see what happens, I can’t wait to see if you get one 👍👍
That's how much I know too lol! I think I can snag one if they come back through! Thank you for watching I really appreciate it!
Hi
keep after them, only otter we have caught was in a beaver cross over
I hope I can catch one somehow! There are no beavers in this creek and not very deep! I really appreciate you watching brother!
*꧁ ⭐ Terima kasih 👌 ꧂*
Drowner where he goes in n out is my go to
I don't have any water deep enough to drown them! Thank you for watching and helping my friend!
It's going to be fun trying to catch one for sure! I really appreciate you watching and supporting my friend!
great work bro. since otters are carnivores and predatory what if you put some chunks of fish around the trap? I dunno.
I got one this morning brother! I'm so happy! He's already at the taxidermist! Thank you so much for watching and all your support my friend!
Love it. Wish I knew
Lol! Thank you for watching brother!
Did you give it a thought yet to set up trail cams and see the otter's movements around the area of the water? It's just an hairbrained idea.
Good luck Mark and I hope my suggestion might help you out a little.
That's a great idea my friend! Thank you for watching and supporting!!
Flip your trap, and bend your trigger wire so it's under water giving the otter what appears to be a clear path through the trap
Have your trigger on the bottom not the top if you know what I mean
Sounds good Charlie! I really appreciate your support my friend!
I haven’t read all the comments and I’m sure someone has mentioned this already, but I’ve only been successful with otter in completely submerged 330’s and 1.5 foot holds in their travel ways…good luck.
I'm trying buddy but there's not enough water to totally submerge then! Thank you very much for watching and commenting my friend!
Get em Mark!
Thanks brother!
Yoooooooo!
Thanks Earl!
I catch mine using snares I set about six feet apart in their runs.
Thank you very much for watching and supporting my friend! I don't use any snares but sounds like a great idea!
Don't give up you'll get him.
Thank you for the encouragement my friend!!
Good luck with the otters.
Thank you for watching my friend!!
@@MarkJLarsonOutdoors You are welcome.
just put small fresh fish on x 220 holding on your forks in the creek, it works 4 me
I sure would if I had any fish!! Thank you for the comment and watching my friend!
Hope you get it.
Thank you for watching my friends!
Try throwing some dirt on the bottom of the box or chopped grass. More natural. Snow helped I see, at least visually.
Thank you very much for the help my friend! I eventually got him then another one!! I really appreciate your support!
