    Thank you all for watching. The correct definition for "syncretism" at 1:03 is: the amalgamation or attempted amalgamation of different religions, cultures, or schools of thought.
    I had that in there originally but accidentally overwrote it in the final edit. Peace and love to all.

      Marcus Aurelius plagiarized Aristotle as a weapon to destroy his opposition.

    I noticed the connection myself in study. This video is seamless all around. I think that was one of the best videos I’ve seen one youtube in long time. Great work my friend.

    The spirit of Bodhisattva has been the driving force behind my retirement journey.
    I have found a real connection between Buddhism and Stoicism.
    I appreciate your video and thank you for

    Corey, this is great work. I have linked all of the material from antiquity together in this same manner. What I find is a template based on the sequence of a humans life, how we come about and how we interact with our memories to change our life for the better. That is Stoic philosophy alright. Personal psychology hidden in works, religions, spiritual teachings and philosophies, all wrapped around one core teaching. It's a confusing topic. It's huge. I can link Buddha, Lao Tzu, Moses, Greek Myth. Even this 500 year recent connection from Romans and Welsh works. Christianity is on this same template. Myth and religions are all on this conceptual template that is hard to see.
    1. Jesus was 'called' as the only son of God, had 'supernatural powers,' traveled with 'handpicked disciples' and seeks the 'Kingdom of heaven within.'
    2. Arthur was 'called' as the only one who could get Excalibur, had Merlin for 'supernatural powers,' traveled with 'handpicked Knights' and seeks 'The Holy Grail.'
    I can get that from Enoch, The Bhaggavad Gita and anywhere else it is hidden. I have learned their secrets of hiding the one stoic truth in material meant for the masses. But it is now broken. Abrahamic religion took a horrible turn under the Romans. They turned it right back into a idol worship religion.

      If you haven’t I’d recommend looking into the idea of the heroes journey by Joseph Campbell.
      I was also just listening to an audiobook where the author makes the point that most religions are “syncretisms” adopting elements from other religions and cultures as they spread. (Like how Christianity absorbed various pagan customs, etc.)
      Definitely a fascinating topic of study.

      @@coreyjcampbell Thanks. I know Campbell's work very well. I don't like using his name because people come with opinions about what I'm doing and when I vary, they tell me I'm wrong. Or many people who cannot read concepts just say it has been debunked. It's close. But Campbell didn't have it all or didn't tell it all. I don't ride his coat tails. He missed many steps and he kept them analogous. He missed cyclical pain and struggle to leave the past. He also completely missed the creation myth which is where we come from from birth. The Hero's Journey is very common and that is what he saw, but he did not see all the steps. He also kept them analogous.
      Crossing the Threshold is turning into ones memories. These turn inward to the psyche, he knew that. Belly of the Whale is being in the mind. Meeting with the Goddess is meeting with your subconscious bundle of memories etc. They are mentally interactive steps when one figures them out and they can be talked about and interacted with in modern terms.
      Anyway, cool. Thanks. I appreciate your work.

    I really like the stoic approach, though I have to say that as someone who's kind of an idealist, I really struggle with how to feel about the emphasis on not worrying about things you can't control. Should we really all just look inwards and ignore things beyond our control? It sounds a lot like giving up sometimes. Maybe there's some kind of perfect mindset these philosophies are chasing where you can both feel no attachment to things, but still apply yourself to the greater good. I'm not sure I believe that exists, though. It's an interesting thought experiment: if everyone was enlightened, would that make everyone fundamentally selfish? Would the tribe fall apart because of it?

    • @coreyjcampbell
      @coreyjcampbell  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Both philosophies do have a strong moral and ethical component that I didn't get into. I think the point is more you learn to ignore things that can ultimately be judged as superficial, not worthy of worry or concern.
      Although there is an ongoing debate about whether enlightenment or these types of spiritual pursuits do make you overly detached. One critique of stoicism is that it was built around the harsh reality of ancient war times where you're much more likely to have friends and family die unexpectedly, etc. So made more sense to have less attachments.
      Buddhism has a strong component around cultivating compassion for all beings (buddhists are traditionally vegetarian for example) so it's definitely not a fundamentally selfish mindset.

    I did enjoy your video for the most part. But... Did you really have to show your little Twitter escapades? I know you seem to dislike Elon Musk, Jordan Peterson, Andrew Tate, and a certain side of the political spectrum, but what does this have to do with a video on Buddhism and Stoicism?
    Don't take me wrong here, I don't mind your opinion per se and I like hearing from people with different opinions. But low-quality jabs against people you don't like just aren't very interesting, and they can annoy your audience and make you look less professional. It’s unnecessarily divisive in a way that isn’t particularly constructive or entertaining.
    Why don't you just make one or more separate videos to address these topics? I'd watch them. Express your well-researched thoughts in a structured and respectful manner.
    You seem to care a lot about these issues. Direct your passion towards a constructive and meaningful video or two. You may have the potential for it.

    Great video but why al the negative talk about Jordan Peterson?

    • @coreyjcampbell
      @coreyjcampbell  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't deny he's said some interesting stuff at times and no doubt has helped a lot of young men get their lives together but... The last few years especially since joining the Daily Wire he's taken a really hard partisan turn, has become even more obsessed with culture war issues, and just outputs a ton of incoherent garbage on the site formerly known as Twitter.
      If you agree with his politics or find his advice useful you do you but I think there are much better sources of wisdom in the world. Even at his "best" a lot of what he says can feel like an intellectual word salad, at times interesting metaphorically and spiritually, but often very light on substantive arguments. And lastly, I doubt the judgement of anyone who extolls an all-meat diet as a magical cure for anything.
      Just my two cents though.

      Jordan Peterson is a pseudo-intellectual who uses verbosity to mask his lack of profundity. He is just an internet phenomenon like Andrew Tate with no sense of profundity in his works. No serious academic or intellectual hold him in high regard. Popularity cannot be the yardstick of someone's significance. Kim Kardashian is popular too.
