The Fr. Lasance Missal contains a complete study plan called "Read Mass with the Priest" that explains how to set your missal and how to follow the priest through the Mass.
I have a 1957 St. Joseph’s Missal which I bought in a thrift store in 1998 when I wasn’t even thinking of attending a Latin Mass. I just always looked for Catholic stuff- medals, pins, books, holy cards- in thrift stores, or second-hand stores. I have some beautiful old holy cards and medals acquired that way, and I got super lucky finding that 1957 missal!
I was cracking up when you talked about how your 4 year old might pull out all your ribbons out of place and you then spend the next 2-3 minutes doing penance fixing them! 😂 Thank you Dr. Taylor Marshall! Not only are your videos very insightful, they inspire a faithful, positive, and humorous way to look at things. A recent convert to the Latin Mass here from the Novus Ordo Mass! Been going since the end of 2020 and I’m still trying to figure out the missal. Your version is the best way so far! Thank you! God bless....
What a timely subject. My wife and I have started attending Latin Mass and we got three of the many ribbons down. We need help with the rest. Can't wait!
In your Fr. Lassance missal page 45 (study plan) gives you recommendation on how to use your ribbons. I also use post- it tabs to mark important places in the missal I regularly use (eg. canon, devotional prayers, sacrament of confession, prefaces, etc.)
I bought my Fr. Lasance last June ( Dr. Marshall's recommendation) . took me about a month to really get it figured out. Its great. I have my own ribbon system. interesting to hear what Dr. Marshall will say.
The video is using Fr. Lasance’s missal that has 6 ribbons: 1st ribbon: Beginning of the Mass (either Aspergers or Prayers at the Foot of the Altar) 2nd Ribbon: At the beginning of the Holy Roman Cannon i.e., Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) 3rd Ribbon: Cycle of the Sundays (ribbon of Sunday worship) 4th ribbon: Where the current date is for the daily mass 5th ribbon: Accounts of Feasts and Lives of the saints 6th ribbon: first Fridays or Requiem Mass, Mass of Our Lady on Saturdays
@@SusanHartman915 The Asperges is the sprinkling with Holy Water. It's done before the prayers at the foot of the altar. I'm not sure what missal you have but it probably is a page or two before the start of the Mass. The Asperges isn't always said at Mass. So, For a beginner it's probably best to just start at the 'prayers at the foot of the altar'.
Thank you Dr Marshall. My wife is learning to understand the Latin Mass and it's not easy for her. Once again, the great work you do is positively impacting my family. I know I'm one of many. Truly a Godsend. (Bte-3 years ago an SSPX priest told me to listen to you while I was discerning becoming a trad Cat. 3 years ago)
In my Fr Lasance missal there’s a guide on page 45 for placing ribbons, in case you forget Dr Marshall’s instruction. The whole section beginning at page 43 is great for beginners like me. Maybe other missals are similar.
Dawn Gorrell I’ve had the missal for many years, don’t remember the source. Never opened it ‘till recently. Should have started going to Latin Mass back then.
I am a total newby to the Latin mass and did not find this video helpful in the slightest. But thank you for directing me to the page in the Fr. Lasance missal. That's the one I bought. Since there is no table of contents in the beginning of this tome, I'm glad to hear from you that there is a guide for where to place the ribbons in the Fr. Lasance missal. Perhaps I will understand it better than what Dr. Marshall offers. God bless you.
Thank you! Abbot Leonard Giardina gave me the New Roman Missial by Father Lansance. I also remember the days of little kids. We had a new large family at Mass Sunday. They are so precious.
very informative. I'm using my 1962 Missal once in a while during mass to show one of my children about where we are during the mass, or if I brought someone new to the mass. The entire mass for me from start to finish how Monsenior and the altar servers interact and the praters are just so beautiful that I would prefer to silently watch and lift up their prayers. The reverence exhibited for this mass is quite awesome.
I've received today my first Latin Missal (Latin-German) and I am really happy. I like it a lot. I've ordered it at the publishing house of FSSP in Germany. Thank you Dr. Marshall for your inspiration. Without you I probably wouldn't have developed the interest for the TLM. I have also found a parish where I live with the TLM on almost all weekdays and on Sunday. It's a FSSP parish. I haven't been there yet but I am planning to go there and experience my first TLM. I'm really looking forward to it. God bless!
I highly recommend getting your missal from the Latin Mass missal helper it was 67.00 free shipping and came with a beautiful handwritten thank you on a holy card!
I am French and just got started with the Latin Mass, and you are my very teacher, for there's no video in French about the ribbons ! I unfortunately do not have the Fr. Lasance Missal (because it is only in English), but I intend to buy one someday (I just looooove English !!!). I have an old Missal, but it was not complete, so I purchased an old St André Missel (1955), with a beautiful leather cover, it has not been used a lot, it's like new. I will use it tomorrow for the very first time !!! So happy !!! I will go to Saint Eugène Sainte Cécile Church in Paris, they have a wonderful Schola, there. Please pray for the two priests of that parish who have spent a whole day at the police station this week, just because, we were not wearing masks during Easter Vigil !!!!!!!! Our Bishop intends to give them some punishement too and threatens to... close the church !!!!!!!!!
I went to that church, was surprised to see people wearing sweatpants, but hey, always happy to see people attend the TLM! I use the Sainte-Madeleine missal.
I have a Missal from Baronius Press and have two ribbons (2/6) to place as I need. Won't that be fun! Just moved to a part of Louisiana with generous Latin Mass opportunities, and am so grateful for that -- Thanks, Taylor! Excellent help, here. God bless you!
I use my last (6th ribbon) on the section that has Eucharistic prayers and devotion. Sometime during the offertory I read and reflect on a prayer before receiving communion, and after receiving communion once back in the pew I read and reflect on a prayer after receiving communion. The Fr Lasance Missal contains prayers by different saints, like St Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure, etc.
Thank you Dr. Marshall, you have no idea how much I’ve learned from your videos. You also inspire me to learn Latin. I’m practicing with you every time you open one of your videos and when you closed them with a prayer 🙏 ❤️🇺🇸
I am so blessed to have received my new Latin missal from the courier today...just in time for this lecture. Thank you so much Dr Marshall...you are the best! God bless you and your family.
My Missal is so old that the ribbons fell out. I installed one for the Mass which I move as the Mass proceeds. I use a paperclip for the Sunday readings.
Thank you so much for this video. I have Father Lasance. Admittedly, I looked around the church and noticed everyone seemed to have it. I went with the peer pressure. Thankfully, I saw your other video about which was the Winner. So I guess I chose the right one. BTW, I'm loving my TLM Journey. Thank you again.
Thanks a lot for this. I've not too long bought my first Latin Mass Missal. This has made it feel a lot more accessible to a newbie like me. Many thanks.
Thank you! How appropriate! Just found an old family missal and was wondering how to utilize the ribbons! So happy to learn from you Dr. Marshall, exactly how to place them. Uber thanks!! Bless your heart, and your mission to educate us. Truly grateful.
When I got my Fr Lasance Missal (1993 edition), I read through the whole beginning section on how the Missal works, the and the Mass works. There’s a section on the vestments and sacred vessels etc. it’s wonderful! I love the Prayer section at the back and the short bios about the daily saints as well. I wish it had a better table of contents at the beginning of the Missal, although that does make you need to become familiar with it and peruse through the whole book. Love it!
This was very helpful, I was one of those people you mentioned at the beginning of the video, black ribbon for requiem Masses, other ribbons for seasons we are in liturgically :)
One way to keep them from fraying is to take a lighter and run the flame quickly over the bottom of each ribbon. It will melt it slightly and stop the fraying. Its an old seamstress trick. It worked with my St. Andrews ribbons. It will not work with natural fiber ribbons however.
I keep one ribbon at the beginning of mass and use a holy card as a bookmark to follow along, saves the Canon ribbon for another spot! Don't have the Fr. Lasance, so I keep one at the prayers before/after communion, and one on the votive collects - helpful for daily prayers.
Looking forward to this!. Perhaps you can do a future video on the traditional Roman Breviary, Monastic Diurnal, Little Office of the BVM?? Thank You Dr. Marshall!
This is what I do personally for those who care- 1st ribbon is the mass of the day, 2nd is prayers at the foot of the altar, 3rd is Credo, 4th is Communion of the priest (most missals have a spiritual communion on this page) and the 5th ribbon is for any commerations that occur.
Yup what I do...Beginning..Cannon...Sunday...Saint of the day then I use prayer/holy card for book markers for extra prayers and the prayers on the cards. When you come back from communion and kneel down I use the time for extra prayers and intentions. I have a Holy card with Anima Christi on it and I use it if I'm distracted or having a hard time to focus. (you how it get sometimes ie a baby crying a lot or anything else)
Thanks for this instruction. 😀 I’ve been using Missals for a few years now and have a nice little collection going. I use the old ones because I like the language better. - “pour forth your grace upon us, we beseech thee O Lord” is poetic. I am bored now with current Missals. (I used Magnificat for a long time )
I was 13 when the church started changing the Mass, but I do not remember using that many ribbons, perhaps I had a child's missile. But it was easy to follow. The change in the Mass happened very slowly.
@@kaceyd6342 I'm stuck in a tiny town working for two years as an administrator on a courthouse. Not near a Latin Mass. Made the conversion a few years ago and have never been to the new Mass. Haven't been willing to go, God help me. Pray for me. I can travel five hours to Sacramento CA or wait it out. I need the sacraments. 🙏💌
Thank you for this help 💕. More spoon feeding along these lines would allow for more meaningful participation. My Anglican mom, from UK, converted at marriage to our cradle Catholic dad. Guess who taught us our faith and catechism? Right.... mom. The best Catholic I ever knew!
I just put the colors at the corresponding liturgical season! I don't use my ordinary that much anyway since I usually sing in my pew from the Kyriale/Missal/Hymnal.
I don’t read the Book while attending the TLM.. I studied first at home then I just focus on my soul and I make sure I can examine my sins and so that I can have a beautiful Holy Communion.. the turning of the pages while at mass can distract you and the priest sometimes..
I’m not sure if this is improper, but I usually have a ribbon at the “General Devotions” section at the back of the Fr. Lasance Missal & use for the ‘After Communion’ prayers when I get back to my pew after Communion. Then I go back to paying attention to Mass when the priest is doing the Communion/Post-Communion readings or the Last Blessing. But maybe those devotions are meant to wait until after Mass. I’ve spent most of my life going the the Latin Mass, but don’t remember learning about the ribbons, so generally ignored them & just used little holy cards as bookmarkers to flip between the Mass and the readings.
I'm an old guy who grew up attending and serving the Latin Mass in the 1950s. It's all we knew. Thanks, Dr. Marshall. I have an aunt's Father Lasance Missal from 1915 and my mother's St. Joseph Sunday Missal. However, the one I still use most often is the Marian Daily Missal the Benedictine sisters gave me in grammar school. It is logical, clear, and has a daily spiritual reflection at the end of each Mass. I keep one ribbon at the prefaces.
Loved this!! Thank you. I had to laugh at the frayed ribbons...I didn't think of making knots, so when my children brought theirs home after a few months into the school year, asking me to fix them...I waxed the ends. Go with the knots! :)
It's not complicated, if you go to a Latin Mass go ahead and just sit down and absorb it all, go ahead and pray a rosary during the mass. It's just the prayers of the Latin Mass are so beautiful. Go and offer God everything during the mass, you don't have to follow the missal if you don't choose to, the priest is praying those prayers on your behalf already.
This is optional. There are misals with the readings of the English Mass. You can just go and pray if you prefer but the mass is much more beautiful when you go that extra mile in order to understand it.
The Latin Mass is the best place for that. You don't actually have to worry about any of the ribbons and stuff. I don't even bother using my missal much of the time. Just know that the sacrifice is happening and offer up your prayers, meditate on the homily during the mass.
The instructions in the fr lance missal for the ribbons say : yellow ordinary of mass. Green: Sunday after pentecost. White: feasts of our lord. Red: pentecost, feasts of passion. Purple: advent or lent. Black: masses for the dead. After that says Priest at the altar wears vestments showing the days color-the ribbon colors correspond.
One can get Latin missals from leaflet Missal company also GIA Publication Inc.of Chicago Illinois did have latin missals. They also have a number of Latin music resources. If you don't have a Latin Mass in your area, ask your Priest if a weekly Latin Mass can be scheduled in your parish you already attend.Vatican 2 never ruled out Latin Mass in any parish. Also if your parish uses organ, mention it to your Parish Music Director in a polite way if Latin music can be brought into mass there. Parish Music Directors do listen to parishioners requests they can at times get the Parish Priest to change things or do something new in the parish There are many times Latin music in the missal or hymnals your parish already uses that just isn't being used mention it to your Music Director and even if your parish is contemporary worship still talk to the Music Director about a Latin Mass being brought into the parish.Vatican 2 did not end or forbid the Latin Mass or use of Latin music at mass the individual parishes themselves ended it Speak up you want a traditional Latin Mass at your parish being respectful to Music Directors that a contemporary music mass can still remain there as well.
Why is TH-cam not keeping track of the Marshall videos I watch? Absolutely NONE of them have a red line across the bottom or are marked "watched", but every single other video I have ever watched is marked immediately after viewing. Marshall videos not so, even after waiting days and days...
I have my mom's 1955 St. Joseph missal. Doesn't help me follow along too well at all. I have a Fr. Lasance missal and have to watch this video each time, my missal is new, to figure out where to put the ribbons because i just can't remember how to do so. Sometimes I can follow along, sometimes I can't. I'm sure that I'll get the hang of it after a few more sundays.
First, where can you purchase the Lassance (spelling?) and second, I use what is called "fray-block" a liquid one can apply to the tip of the ribbon so it prevents fraying.
Dr. Excuse me for my lack of knowledge on this subject. I am considering purchasing a new Daily Roman Missile. I have been purchasing the small paper back ones every year. Would I also have to purchase the Daily Roman Missile over and over if my main reason for having it is to follow mass, the readings and Gospel? Thank you so much. Love your channel. God bless. 🙏
I wanted to add a comment about the different colored ribbons. There is a reason for the colors and their use. Open The Father Lasance Missal to page 49, exercise 5. In the chapter called “Read the Mass with The Priest- A Study Plan.” The gold or yellow ribbon is used for the high or low mass start point. To mark propers: The green ribbon is for Sundays after Pentecost and Sundays from Epiphany to Septuagesima where Green vestments are worn. The white ribbon is used to mark out propers of Masses for feast of our Lord, feast of our Lady, and feast of saints not martyrs. White vestments. The red ribbon is used for Pentecost, and feast of Martys - where red vestments are worn. The purple ribbon is typically used to mark out the masses in Advent and lent, and on certain other vigil, where purple vestments are worn. And the black ribbon is used to mark out the location for masses of the dead. Basically, the red green white purple and black ribbons have to do with masses where the same color vestments are worn…: page 49 in study plan chapter explains it all perfectly well. It’s kind of a type of way to train the laity for type vestments I suppose. I don’t really use them that way. But that’s the reason they’re like that.
I put ribbon at the beginning of mass, the next ribbon moves along with the progression of the mass so I always know where to go when toggling back and forth to other sections
Can you please go over the other regular English missals for Sunday and weekdays. Which is best? So many versions to choose from and a bit confusing. Now is a great time for people to get one and learn it since the church is not allowed to have any papers, books, hymnals etc. because of the virus. Thanks!
The Fr. Lasance Missal contains a complete study plan called "Read Mass with the Priest" that explains how to set your missal and how to follow the priest through the Mass.
Thank you. I have recently received the Father Lasance Missal. I look forward to not being perpetually lost. God bless.

4th ribbon: Where the current date is for the daily mass
5th ribbon: Accounts of Feasts and Lives of the saints
6th ribbon: first Fridays or Requiem Mass, Mass of Our Lady on Saturdays
I have the Angelus Press Missal so I'm sure its a little different but, I like to put a ribbon where the Devotions for Communion are too.
They are not listed as such in my missal . so I am assuming the second is the Gloria?

Thank you for this help 💕. More spoon feeding along these lines would allow for more meaningful participation. My Anglican mom, from UK, converted at marriage to our cradle Catholic dad. Guess who taught us our faith and catechism? Right.... mom. The best Catholic I ever knew!
I just put the colors at the corresponding liturgical season! I don't use my ordinary that much anyway since I usually sing in my pew from the Kyriale/Missal/Hymnal.
Thank you for your very quick response
Praise Be to You Lord Jesus Christ! In Jesus Name i pray! Amen 🙏📖❤️
Thank you Dr. Taylor 🙏
I recommend taking a lighter and burning the ends of the ribbons. The melted synthetic fibers will keep it from fraying.
I use a 7th yellow ribbon to tie around the _Old Oak Tree._
Run your ribbon quickly over a candle flame, the fibers will melt and seal together preventing fraying
Loved this!! Thank you. I had to laugh at the frayed ribbons...I didn't think of making knots, so when my children brought theirs home after a few months into the school year, asking me to fix them...I waxed the ends. Go with the knots! :)
I wish mass wasn’t this complicated, I just like going and praying and showing respect
Just know that the sacrifice is happening and offer up your prayers, meditate on the homily during the mass.
gerardos256 thank you!
CodingCrusader1095 thank you this is great!
I also set ribbons at the Preface and the Common of Saints, if applicable.
I agree with Cara, have my Fr. Lasance missal and know there’s a home for each ribbon but need help! T/y DTM...can’t wait!🙏🏻
Thank you so much ❣️❣️❣️ I really really need this🙋🏻🤗
Although...frayed ribbons means it's being used; that's a good thing!
Parish Music Directors do listen to parishioners requests they can at times get the Parish Priest to change things or do something new in the parish
There are many times Latin music in the missal or hymnals your parish already uses that just isn't being used mention it to your Music Director and even if your parish is contemporary worship still talk to the Music Director about a Latin Mass being brought into the parish.Vatican 2 did not end or forbid the Latin Mass or use of Latin music at mass the individual parishes themselves ended it
Speak up you want a traditional Latin Mass at your parish being respectful to Music Directors that a contemporary music mass can still remain there as well.
Fantastically helpful; thank you!
God bless. 🙏
I put a ribbon on the preface as well.
Thanks 🙏🏻
This is so helpful. Thank you!!
Great post! Thank you.
I was going to ask about that thank you
I wanted to add a comment about the different colored ribbons.
There is a reason for the colors and their use.
Open The Father Lasance Missal to page 49, exercise 5. In the chapter called “Read the Mass with The Priest- A Study Plan.”
The gold or yellow ribbon is used for the high or low mass start point.
To mark propers:
The green ribbon is for Sundays after Pentecost and Sundays from Epiphany to Septuagesima where Green vestments are worn.
Other than the post 1955 Holy Week, what else do you not like about the Baronius missal?
I put ribbon at the beginning of mass, the next ribbon moves along with the progression of the mass so I always know where to go when toggling back and forth to other sections
Thanks!
Can you please go over the other regular English missals for Sunday and weekdays. Which is best? So many versions to choose from and a bit confusing.
Now is a great time for people to get one and learn it since the church is not allowed to have any papers, books, hymnals etc. because of the virus. Thanks!
May God repay you :)
PLEASE GOD AND OUR LADY OF FATIMA CLAIM YOUR VICTORY SOON AND PROTECT US FROM OUR ENEMIES❤🌹🕊
Very helpful thanks
The ribbons are usually made of synthetic fibres, so I use a lighter to seal the ends
