It's really unfortunate that this mystery loses a lot of it's impact when you don't speak Japanese and the entire thing hinges on Japanese language clues and puzzles. But can't fault the show for me being uncultured lol.
It is a shame true, but this isn't nearly as intense as the Monogatari-series as the entire story (not just one case/mystery) uses Japanese intricacies.
Yeah, the technicality of some of the mysteries get lost in translation, but some re watches allowed me to better understand how they were supposed to be perceived. Giving me a much greater appreciation of Hyouka.
In the first half of the show I related a lot more to Hotarou as I was normally top of my class in high school and people said I was just smart. I never had a good memory so I never saw myself in Satoshi, just a pretty good "deduction" and understanding of the topics I was good in. It wasn't until this arc that I started to relate to Satoshi a lot more. Maybe it was because I was always told i was smart that I started viewing how smart someone was as just a talent that you either had or didn't have. So when I looked at people who were smarter than me or understood things better than me, I assumed that I would never get there. I felt very bittersweet after this arc because it made me look at myself differently and made me realize (or thought I realized) that I may never be as "smart" them. Your analysis helped me understand that I was so focused on the others that I never noticed how Mayaka decided to keep going and realizing the gap is just the first step. You gave me a different outlook on this arc and I will keep that in mind during future rewatches. Great analysis and I can't wait to finish your series on the show.
This analysis made me realize how Satoshi and Mayaka are probably among my favorite characters in the anime universe. Despite both of them having a relatively short screen time in the entire series compared to Hotaro and Chitanda, and as well as compared to other notable characters in other shows, Hyouka was able to provide us with such complex and nuanced characters, with such depth and realness, through Satoshi and Mayaka. And your analysis definitely helps in bringing about that genius of the show in creating these characters. Awesome video.
The talent vs hardwork plot in this arc really hit deep. The fact that no matter how much effort & passion the hardworker put in, he will never surpass the talented. Forever number 2. And the fact that the talented although putting in effort to achieve the no 1 spot, the hardworker denies this fact by claiming they are just born talented Really reminded me of Sakurasou no pet kanojo and also my school life. Although no 2 is a respected and envied spot by those who are lower, the hardworker shuns this and continue to envy the no 1 spot. Forever burden by his own expectations
I have never realised this while watching it but now I can never look at Hyouka the same as I did before. Its such a masterpiece, its so well written and no wonder why the author takes so long to write this. You gave the meaning of this whole arc and I didnt even understand it, especially Mayaka's side. To think that it really symbolises real life happenings, gives me the chills. Its true that its just hard to accept how you easily got defeated by someone who doesnt even care while you have been trying so hard yet it aint enough. The fact that talented people can just rock the whole competition without even trying while some tried their whole life and still lose is just devastating. Dont relate to this tho cause I dont even do anything in my life lol. Tho from this anime, we can learn that life is unfair but we dont have be the best at things, its too stressful and will be tiring. Its exactly what Satoshi did. Lets just do the right things and live to the fullest..... This anime has been so good for me and now after this 1hr vid, it made me think different and this has become my favorite... Anyways that was so worth watching and keep up the good work

Watching this analysis series has given me a whole new appreciation for this anime! There's just so much subtext and subtle things scattered throughout the narrative that it's easy to miss sometimes, just trying to get a grip on the big picture. Brilliant, in-depth analysis, beautifully written and presented - much like the anime itself! Great stuff!
I have always loved hyouka but your analysis made me realise things I never did and made me love the series even more. thank you for all your hard work.
I knew what this arc what talking about and the message it was trying to convey, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Thank you for tying up everything nicely 😊
Great analysis! I'm watching Hyouka for the first time in parallel with your videos and it's been an awesome experience so far. They help bring out so many details that you normally don't catch on the first watch. This arc in particular hit pretty close to home. I'm a university student on my last year and I'm kind of going through an "impostor syndrome" of sorts, feeling that most people around me are just more talented than I am. Mayaka's arc and her relationship with Satoshi made me realize that pretty much everyone feels this way at one point or another, and that while I feel like the "bench player", I'm probably "the prodigy" to someone else. It's what I'm loving about this series up to this point: it feels super relatable, even though I'm nowhere close to being a japanese high school student.
How does this have only 5k views? Seriously, your Hyouka analysis series is incredibly entertaining and well made, 5k views is underrating it way too much :(
Thanks a lot for making this. It beautifully encapsulates the themes of this arc, shedding light on things i havent even considered after my repeated rewatches. Exelent analysis of an excelent show, thank you.
Thank you for the analysis! Watched this video years ago, but now that I've felt what Satoshi and Mayaka have gone through, It hits much deeper. I'll strive to not let my insecurities get in the way of my friendships as much as I can.
I love how you put some bits of haikyuu references here, like, it took me a minute to realize that the girl who won the quiz contest was named Shimizu and the way the “prodigy and bench player” dynamic kinda suits the relationship between Oikawa and Ushijima or Kageyama, or maybe Sugawara and Kageyama, also. There’s so many details you pointed out that made me surprised, because I’ve read the book and rewatched the anime but I didn’t realize the anime shows the details so perfectly that I didn’t realize it until you mentioned it here. I’ve been binging your Hyouka analysis videos and it just makes me love Hyouka even more. Thank you sm for the content^^
(Spoiler for Monogatari Second Season, more specifically Otorimonogatai and Koimonogatari) Some themes in this arc are really akin to the themes that are present in Sengoku Nadeko's story in the Monogatari series. We learn at the end of Koimonogatari that she wanted to become a manga artist, but was too embarrassed by her work, so embarrassed that she wouldn't even put it to trash; instead, she would keep it in her closet, which she forbids anyone from opening. She thought it wasn't worth anything, and thus stopped pursuing her dream. She buried herself into lies to the point where she had two layers of them; the first layer comes off in Otorimonogatari, which was the lies to others, and the second layer comes off in Koimonogatari, which was the lies to herself. It's the second that is relevant here. She lied to herself so much, she wouldn't even acknowledge it was her dream at some point. She became a fake version of herself, and believed in it. To the point she believed becoming a yandere god was the best thing that could happen to her. This story basically shows how giving up on your dreams and lying to yourself can be hurtful, although it is of course brought to the extreme for plot's sake. There's also a passage in the dialogue between Nadeko and Kaiki (who discovered her secret, and who masters talking-no-jutsu) which resembles Chitanda's line a lot. Nadeko says that she can't become a manga artist just by thinking she can become one, to which Kaiki replies that if she doesn't think about becoming one, she'll never become one.
@@houghwhite411 Yeeesss I was really excited when he made a video about Bakemonogatari. I really hope he ends up doing a series on the Monogatari series. In the meantime, Under The Scope has done a pretty good job at it so far. Really like his video on Nadeko's arcs.
I'm trying to come up with an interesting way to say "this video is wonderful and has opened my eyes to the level of detail put into crafting this anime and it's story, and I'm grateful for that"
its always interesting to know how other people think about Hyouka, even if its conveyed with an hour length vid. This is gold. All is on point with how i viewed Hyouka in the first place and why its one of the best anime for me, but yeah you actually deliver it much much better in details obviously :) I just hope everyone watched Hyouka, then watch this vid of yours, and come back to it to find that its such an anime with insane process of efforts and thoughts to make. Keep the creative analysis always!
I've been watching your Hyouka series these days. It's very suitable for my meal time. I just wanted to thank you for helping me appreciate Hyouka more
Thank you for the video. This was my 3rd time watching it just now and you finally made it click for me what Satoshi's definition of "expectations" actually was and how they make sense. It was a completely un-relatable topic for me in the way he was using the word. I just ended up writing 5+ paragraphs after thinking about it at length and finally understand it in a small way. I can now see why he is so emotionally charged about the subject and use the word in such a weird way. I never would have thought that deeply about Satoshi's characters without your videos. So thank you, I still may not like Satoshi as a character but at least I can understand him better now.
This was truly an extraordinary analysis. I have postponed watching this video for a long time so i can rewatch the festival arc and enjoy it properly. I must say, it was so worth it and my expectations have been exceeded on a whole another scale. You deserve so much more for a work you put into and i wish i could support your channel and efforts in the future. I can not believe someone disliked this video, because its beyond a doubt, a masterpiece in its own rights. Thank you.
ok then can you explain this to me? why did the 'Jumonji' went so far to pull that drama just to inform the 'Artist' of the manga not the 'Author'? (cause the author already left the school) I mean, if a manga is hit, obviosuly the first reason is the author and then comes the artstyle. If you can't bring back the author then there is no point asking the artist (In a convulated way) to do the sequel of a great story
@@Ryknex The author had already written the sequel. The artist isn't interested in doing the art for it anymore. An unofficial translation of the appropriate passage in the book has "Jumonji" tell Houtarou, "The manuscript for *The Kudryavka Sequence* does exist. I have a copy, and [the artist] should have a copy as well. It was a great story. If [the artist] had the will to draw it, it would be a work that would surpass even [A Corpse by Evening]. Yet for [the artist], drawing manga for a year seems to be merely a fun detour...." I was reminded of what Irisu said when tricking Houtarou into writing the altered movie plot, about making use of talent and not brushing it off as luck, because that's an insult to everyone who doesn't have that talent and can't match it no matter how they try.
From the novels, it's pretty much indicated that Tomoe is not just a hardcore genius, she's almost clairvoyant, or at least Houtarou is fearful of his big sister power of prediction. Call it a hint of "magical realism", as Haruki Murakami or Gabriel Garcia Marquez would do. Maybe Kyoani downplayed this, but I'm always parcial to original source. Edit: You are not talking about why Tomoe brought the doujinshi manga to his brother, that's a key element to the whole deduction of the mystery and you are taking it into account. This is almost divine intervention. Even thou we may admit she take her time to go back home and bring the manga, She already know everything, from the chat with the Empress to her brief view of the poster and deduction smile. She's plotting everything from the shadows (even in the film arc) and she's really out of this World.
Thank you for putting your effort in this analysis, it made me understand this arc clearer and thus appreciate Hyouka more! I've also learned a lot from video, about expectations, the skill gap, and friendship... It truly is amazing~
what i like about satoshi mayaka relationship is that satoshi also tried to call for maya but change his mind in the last moment witch show how they are ready to rely on eatch other but have no trust that they'll get the help they need untell the moment they share in ep 17
Hmm... Maybe Tomoe was just luckily/coincidentally brought A Corpse By Evening with her when she went to Kamiyama High (she didn't necessarily know about he mystery ahead of time) and then looked around the festival events first before coming to the Classic Lit Club room. Oreki's house may be walking distance to the school, but the Japanese standard of "walking distance" can be quite far. I don't think she'd walk back home and then go back to school again just to fetch A Corpse By Evening for Oreki. Tomoe luckily bringing ACBE with her to school fits her "talent" of being "lucky" more than if she went back home to get it.
I must admit that while I was watching Hyouka the festival arc was the least entertaining section, at least for me. I felt like the first half was dragged on way too long without any meaningful progression whereas the second, while interesting, was too packed up and convoluted in its mistery solving to the point I had trouble following basic plot points (I still enjoyed some of the most obvious character moments tho, like the Oreki-Satoshi confrontation, as the meaning behind them was clear). Luckily, your excellent dissection convinced me to give it another chance, as a rewatch would free me from the burden of understanding the plot and your suggestions could bring me to appreciate the more subtle details that make this show. See me back when I'm done rewatching

I was reminded of what Irisu said when tricking Houtarou into writing the altered movie plot, about making use of talent and not brushing it off as luck, because that's an insult to everyone who doesn't have that talent and can't match it no matter how they try.
@@davidbirr2718 yup exactly this!
My favourite video ever.
I just watched an hour video like its nothing... Damn, idk thats even possible
I have a question, what is 'kudryavka's order'?
A book? A theory?
yeah its weird he didn't mention it...and i like her being a mastermind in the shadow!
@@ryukin8385 the name of the manga that Ajimu Takuha indeed to do
The mistake of printing 200 copies is probably because the cost of an anthology is 200 yen, so Mayaka mistook the price for the number of orders.
Thank you for putting your effort in this analysis, it made me understand this arc clearer and thus appreciate Hyouka more! I've also learned a lot from video, about expectations, the skill gap, and friendship... It truly is amazing~
I'm so glaaaaad I watched these videos!!
Thank you so much for them! :)
I don't know what to say.. I am literally speechless. Your way of explaining things is really "Brilliant!"
Great editing.. I love Hyouka even more

this is still the best thing ever, love both the analysis and your voice
what i like about satoshi mayaka relationship is that satoshi also tried to call for maya but change his mind in the last moment witch show how they are ready to rely on eatch other but have no trust that they'll get the help they need untell the moment they share in ep 17
its unfair how i just came accross this right now
This is beautifully done

“ice climbers main chitanda”
banger joke
It's back! Thanks for the reupload!!
Lmao i acctuly watch one hour of hyouka analysis without skipping and rlly enjoyed it
I could watch this for hours...
The Easter eggs in this episode(s) are also the mentioning worth. Tomako, Vocaloid, K-on (?)... are there more ? ? ?
Don't forget Houtarou as a JoJo character.
Where's the K-on reference?
Bravo! This was wonderful.
Really good work! I admire the preparation of your video. While I understood how the plot was, you left me a lot to think about...
Tomoe luckily bringing ACBE with her to school fits her "talent" of being "lucky" more than if she went back home to get it.
thank you
Worth the wait for this great content!
How does Kugayama know Tanabe is Juumonji without knowing the message he was trying to convey?
53:20 timestamp i think about this lot.
I discovered your analysis today and it has blown me away.I would love to see your analysis on Sakurasou No Peto na Kanojou as well.
See me back when I'm done rewatching
the cosplay joke was a banger
HOLD THE FUCK ON
A ONE HOUR VIDEO ?!?!? FOR AN ANIME ANALYSIS
LMAOOOOOOO WHAAAAT?!??
This is beautiful. Keep it up.
Amazing.
