From time to time I like to rewatch Hyouka and as part of that I watch this essay series to accompany it. Not only does it make the rewatch last longer but really highlights how special a show Hyouka is. I'm very glad this video was reuploaded and I would be sad to miss any of this thorough analysis series.
I’ve been waiting for this video to become available to view ever since I discovered it existed. That’s gotta be at least a month. I’ve binged the rest of the RePlay Hyouka videos and I really enjoy them. It’s just so great to watch an anime end to end and then find a comprehensive video analysis of the entire show, especially since I don’t know anyone else who has watched the show leaving me no one to discuss it with. But these videos have filled that void in such a satisfying manner that I even Patreoned for a bit to show my thanks. Thanks for getting this back online. It’s the only one of the bunch I’ve yet to view so here goes.
In terms of story, Houtarou was manipulated and forced into this mystery situation by not only Irisu but also by his club mates even when he expressed that he doesn't want to do it. Besides during the first listening to the 3 theories by the 3 people, the club members were not there to help him and bounce off ideas with him. He always makes mistakes in the previous mysteries and it was the club mates who will correct him along the way, which they are not present this time round. Chitanda also withholds information regarding the class votes and her own opinion about Hongo. Similarly, Eba, who was close to Hongo knew about the ending from Hongo but chose to remain silent about it. And finally, the actual answer to the mystery was heavily reliant on the personality of Hongo, the original writer. Personality was never a strong suit for Houtarou in terms of using it as clues/evidence to solve a mystery due to it's uncertainty. In fact its more up Chitanda's alley which as mentioned before, wasn't voiced out by her. With the combination of manipulation from Irisu, lack of help/support from his club mates, having information withhold from him and personality being a major factor to the answer of the mystery, it's understandable why and how he managed to get the answer wrong. He was then later confronted and almost blamed by his club mates for not arriving at the right answer which further reduced his confidence in himself when he originally didn't have much to begin with.
In terms of writing, its phenomenal how they wrote this story. Ultimately it portrayed character growth/development for Houtarou despite having a negative outcome and feelings at the end of it.
I never really _got_ this arc, no matter how many times I rewatched it, and it was always an itch in my skull. Thank you for this explanation.

the first time i watch hyouka i was a kid and i dropped after 4 or 5 ep and when i was in my second year of highschool i just randomly scrolling animixply i found hyouka again and think lets give it a try again and man that was the one of the best decision of my life and after i watch it i am completely speachless man thats the best thing i watch in my life

Just discovered you from an Oregairu podcast you guested on and when I heard you two mention Hyouka in the first three minutes I knew I found a new anime channel to follow. Hyouka is probably the anime of all time in my opinion

The title of this channel is always very meta for me, because I'm constantly having to replay ten second clips because I was too busy ruminating on the previous ten seconds to absorb what was said in the next ten seconds.

I hope the quality doesn't go down if there is a second season, the director did an amazing job on this but unfortunately died in the arson attack in 2019. And I hope the author releases a 7th novel... it's been 8 years
