How to Air Layer a Japanese Maple

  • In this video, we will show you how to air layer a Japanese maple step by step.
    Air layering is a technique to remove a part of bark and have the tree grow roots from there so you can cut the part of the tree off from the parent tree and make it a separate ‘child’ tree that keeps the same genetics.
    The best time to do air layering is May - June when the leaves have hardeded off. During this time, the tree is creating lots of sugar and sending it down to the roots. By cutting the bark and a thin layer called Phloem, this technique will force the tree to create roots where the nutrient flow is interrupted.
    Depending on the species, trees might root in the next 3-4 months or may take a lot longer.

    Another great video, thanks!. I tried to air layer my JM in March in Northern California using sphagnum moss and after 2 months the air layers broke off. Could it be a) I did it too early in the season ( I waited for new growth to happen), b) I put too much water in the moss or c) I used to much spaghnum moss resulting in the air layer being too heavy and thus causing it to break off? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

    • @MomijiEn
      @MomijiEn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It happened to me before. In my case, the cause was a mix of (c) above and the air layered branch was too thin after removing the bark. The good timing is either super early winter or mid spring (early May).
