Wow, I can't believe my ears! I closed my eyes because I was afraid of being biased (Since I'm Canadian) but the difference is clear as day! The Legendary Gibson Les Paul has been laid low by the Godin LGX SA both in sound and versatility. I never thought I'd see the day that ANY guitar out-performed a Les Paul! I'm just in shock. I knew that Godin made some incredible guitars but I never imagined that they made one that could put a Les Paul to shame!
Ummm. I love Godin Guitars but the pure depth of sound coming from your les Paul is hands better. The Godin in this recording sounds thin and rattly. I’m usually opposed to les Paul’s but from this comparison I have to disagree with other commenters. Sawy
*@ DrRussPhd* ... made out of the local woods that grow in Canada since the last Ice Age with the exception of rosewood & ebony fretboards, unless you want to try composite richlight resembling ebony but better.
I have a 1999 Godin LGXT since about '99 or 2000 (traded three guitars for it), longest I have ever owned a particular guitar, and it is wonderful, other than it weighs a ton and is built like a tank. It beats every Les Paul I have ever owned since 1978 in terms of quality, tones and playability (still have one nice 2000 Gibson LP Std. I acquired about 2009, but the Godin goes to the paid gigs). Plus, it is a "three voice" guitar, also giving you great acoustic and synthesizer tones that a normal straight up electric LP doesn't. If you get a chance to own a LGX-SA or LGXT, jump on it. Having said that, I would also seriously consider the Carvin SH series for another nice "three voice" alternative.
+Nealix D. Have a bunch of Godins but the Icon type 2 Convertable is a gibby killer as well. It has SD P-rails and 2 three way toggles to choose single or p90 or humbucker crunchy heaven. Chambered Mahogany body, mah neck with ebony fret board and of course the HDR which gives it an additional 6 tones for the Pups. 24 3/4 Fit and finish is impecable, even their B stock are better than a gibson. ...gibby has charged too much for too long, paying 2 grand for the name alone.
+Nealix D. I have a Carvin DC127... the neck shape gives me hand cramps now, but the build quality is amazing! The string height is less than a frets height above each fret, consistently and not a buzz anywhere!
Nothing compares toa Real Les Paul! Having said that, you buy the Godin because you looking for max flexibility sound options. The Godin sounds nasal due to it's chambered body. cavity. This helps ( chambered) with it's fantastic acoustic sound ..
I love both and think it's really a hard comparison. The Les Paul has great tones for rock, blues and even metal but the Godin is insanely versatile. Both have great quality but the Godin wins when it comes to quality per dollar. As far as the country goes I have played great guitars made in all countries but most Canadian and USA guitars are excellent. That's my opinion. :)
Yeah that's a bit of a downer if you ask me but they have them in red and blue so that's all that matters. The sound was just mind-blowing! I must admit, the player makes most of the difference. You're fantastic! Brilliant job Simon!
I have a 7000$ Les Paul and just found an 800$ Godin LGX in my local guitar shop....I'm going to buy it tomorrow after watching several demos....I don't like its frankensteinesque look and dog shit color but it certainly is versatile and I already have a nylon string Godin Mutiac which is fantastic. I played the LGX in the shop today and found it ergonomically top notch; the next was great and the sound of the neck pickup was powerful and with a lot of punch. I think that it will be a good gigging guitar. I don't like taking my Les Paul or my top notch Martin on the road....and I think that with my two Godin's Ill be set for just about any type of sound. Thanks for your sober and intelligent review.
Bought a Godin lg at least 17 years ago for 800 bucks Canadian. had many guitars over the years this is still one of my go to guitars. The tone is absolutely awesome and very large in colour. Its no les Paul when it comes to popularity but it has lots of character. The con side of things is the guitar I swear weighs like 200 lbs but it has amazing sustain.
Godins are super comfortable well built. My friend got a used one for under 2oo. Only issues are the pick ups. The wood the build the neck are top notch. I told him to put fralins in. Abd I put that guitar up against and Gibson fender custom shop it’s a monster player easy fast smooth
Well, I've had a Gibson L6S, SG and Les Paul and they've all been sold on, but I still have my two Godin guitars. Better quality, construction and sound. But that's just my opinion.
I actually own both guitars i hated the Gibson burstbuckers and changed them out to Seth lovers PAF its smoother, darker and more mellow but it can still rock or shred. The Godin is more versatile and cleaner especially going through the different tones a 5 selector switch can give you. To me the're completely different but strangely i rarely play neither i play my other stuff.
Well guys..., perhaps it's time to say the obvious: The "heyday" of *F & G* brands and their clones is coming to its end. There are far better choices these days that sound fantastic and they won't break your bank (or credit card for that matter Lol...). If you still can't let go those overpriced, overrated and (let's face it) rather mediocre *F & G* propositions, stick to them. It's free country around here but, if you ask me: I play Mikael Akerfeldt PRS SE signature as my rockin' machine ($ 670+Tax CAD), Hagstrom half-hollow D2F set up with flatwounds for jazz ($ 650+Tax CAD) and, just lately, my doctor prescribed to me one of those Godin beauties. He said: "You won't get any better until you get one of those marvels". I guess, I have no choice. Get *Godin* or remain forever sick Lol...
Funny thing here is that this Godin might cost a bit more than this Gibson. That's a Les Paul Classic which has an MSRP of $2,000USD while the Godin LGXT is $2,100CAD if it has a AA finish (making it less expensive) or $2,850CAD if it has an AAA finish (making it more expensive).
It sounds a bit boxier and like there's less mids. Likely easy to boost its mids with an EQ pedal and get a sound I'd like better. Although I think the LGX already has an onboard EQ.
+thorinbane Yeah, a friend of mine likes his Ches Paul just fine and it really looks authentic too for just low bucks, LOL. Works real well on three gigs I played with him, with me on 5 string bass in his band too.
Godin was better clean, and more versatile AND has the midi option. Gibson LP was fatter/fuller and so better on the overdrive. The Godin was a bit un intelligible? in overdrive. Forty years ago my guitar player had a top-of-the-line Les Paul, and a Stratocaster, but his gigging preference was a Peavy T-60.
i personally like the godin lgx sa, made for canadian winters :P

the Godin wont break off at the headstock because the grain of the wood is going the correct way
Hands down Godin. Love'em, especially LGX-SA.
+XtaticApollo Great axes!!
I'm fast becoming a Godiin fan . .made from old hockey sticks, eh?
DrRussPhd They're great!

+Nealix D. They're great guitars aren't they! Very under rated.
+Simon Smith For sure! Amazing quality.

Agree. It's just the look of Godin I wasn't keen on. Amazing guitar

Godin for me. The sound man! The sound!
Godin forsure
What kind of amp are you using?
My Godin still smells like maple syrup : )
What's wrong with that ???
sweet

Godin. Period.

A company owned by a guitar builder vs a company owned by a businessman who is not interested in guitar.
What to compare?
Who is who
The Godin seems to me to have lower output pickups.
It sounds a bit boxier and like there's less mids. Likely easy to boost its mids with an EQ pedal and get a sound I'd like better.

Gibson Les Paul all the way.
buenisimas las 2 guitarras🖒🖒
Godin you win, eh?
В моей колекции есть и Gibson и Godin, по критерию цена / качество побеждает Godin.
Prefer Godin.
Gibson....its Gibson.
You'll get more p-tang with the Gibson.
+Cybernauts, Terranauts and Astronauts Then buy a Chibson if all you worry about is looks.
+thorinbane Yeah, a friend of mine likes his Ches Paul just fine and it really looks authentic too for just low bucks, LOL. Works real well on three gigs I played with him, with me on 5 string bass in his band too.

Some of us don't need help in that area ;-)
Yeah, like me. Just trying to help out a yutz

as a proud American, Godin guitars are the sh!t...........
Not really they are on same level in terms of sound and playability
terrible demo
