Joni never lost me.....I was in for the long ride and loved her exploration....I always thought hissing was the sound of the lawn heat during a hot hot summer day.
The "hissing" could refer to sprinklers, but In the hottest days of summer (at least in parts of California) lawns do "hiss" due to the sound that the fauna makes within the grass (i.e. fauna, consisting of insects and other unseen creatures). Most notably, this hissing lawn-sound is heard (by anyone walking by a lawn) in late afternoon. Enjoyed your reactions and commentary. THX! Love this album.
Awesome job with the analysis! It's worth noting that she listened to a ton of jazz and classical in her youth, even before the folk phase, and this likely shaped her predilection for unpredictable, complex forms despite a lack of "training".
Very tasteful reaction/analysis, thank you! FYI, her choice of chords apparently comes from the fact that, due to polio, she couldn't play guitar like anyone else, and had to use open tunings, most of the times.
Interesting choice of song. I've never heard anyone before say she didn't know what a One chord was. To be honest I challenge that. She had an innate sense of harmony hence her having so many guitar tunings and her unique alpha numeric way to describe them. I have read there being over seventy but I don't know. The album was released in 1975. Absolute classic, but lyrically it's meaning was to 'unfold like a mystery'. Her words. Good watch.
@@pagliacci2942I don't think she was interested in traditional music notation. More the emotion behind the sound. But she couldn't have interested Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock without a great understanding
Thanks guys! Enjoyed your well-thought-out discussions as well as hearing the song again (I own the album) Joni's recovery from her 2015 nearly fatal brain aneurysm has been a long and grueling rehab for her, but so awesome to see the improvement, even within the past few months to a year! :D The sparkle of joy in her eyes is a beautiful sight indeed! :D Enjoyed her interview by Elton John last weekend too! :D
This was one of Prince’s favourite albums

There were a lot of us who loved and followed Joni as she grew as an artist over the years.
Never lost me, I was along for the ride.

I think she knew many chords names, just not music theory and notation.

I was rather confused and unimpressed by this album when I first heard it. It now remains one of my favourites.

Great video guys! The record is from 75 not 77 :). Would love to see a video on a song from her Mingus album.
