    Very cool that they could repurpose the mall instead of allowing it to deteriorate.

    Wow. What an interesting repurposing a deal mall. It’s clear to see the owner put some money into this property. I’ve never seen so many collectable cars. They just keep on filling and filling the place. Looks like also there’s more room for more vehicles. I can only guess the total value of all these cars. Can this be repeated in another deal mall? Possibly, but not likely. It does however, show what can be done with a property that has good bones. I would never have guessed this could be possible. Well done.

    As for the part about being an ambassador, yesterday (Christmas Eve) I did a bit of last minute shopping around 11am at my local mall, the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove NY. It's a Simon property, built in the early 1970's with a number of upgrades over the year. It's got around a million square feet on one level and is shaped like a plus sign.
    An odd fact is that there's only one full-fledged anchor, a 3-level Macy's on the east end. A Sears on the north end began a liquidation sale in January, a couple of month before the mall had to close because of the virus, and never reopened. It hadn't done much business in years and as far as I can tell didn't drive much traffic to the rest of the mall as given the road layout not many people entered the property from that direction.
    Years ago there was a third anchor, a Stern's on the west end, but after that chain became part of Macy's the building was demolished and replaced by an outdoor "power center" with several stores including a Barnes & Noble, Cheesecake Factory, and Dick's Sporting Goods. A JCPenney had been a junior anchor, basically connecting two arms of the plus-sign layout, but it closed in mid-2019. A pity really, as if it had held out until Simon took control of the chain it probably would still be around. Simon also counts the aforementioned Dick's, a Macy's Furniture store, and an H&M as junior anchors.
    Vacancies didn't look too bad during yesterday's walkthrough. In addition to the former Sears and JCPenney spaces the other main ones had been a Gap and a New York & Company. There also are a few vacancies in the smallish food court. On a better note, there are a few stores which have opened in the last month or so: Sunglasses Hut, Lenscrafters, a British sneaker/sportwear outlet called JD Sports that has about 30 US stores, and WIndsor, a women's fast fashion retailer. There are two stores coming soon, a vastly expanded T Mobile and a new restaurant whose name I have forgotten not far from the food court.
    All in all, Smith Haven looks in pretty decent shape, and even disregarding Christmas Eve (when it was crowded) it seems to attract decent numbers. It also helps that Simon is one of the better mall operators.

      This is exactly what we were getting at with that plea at the end. Thank you!

      @@RawRealRetail Glad I could help! Within the next few weeks I should be able to visit the Walt Whitman Mall, another Simon property, that's about 20 miles west of Smith Haven. It's probably around the same size though with a different layout, and is one of the more upscale malls around.

    Are the cars all for sale?

    • @RawRealRetail
      @RawRealRetail  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many of them are. A little less than half are old antiques from the early days of automobiles and those are just museum pieces but a lot of the newer cars are indeed for sale.
