  • We partnered with Herb Pharm to highlight 6 of the most popular herbal extracts and remedies at the moment. Looking at the top sellers in the herb world can really give us a sense of the state of the world at the moment and give us a clue as to what 'ails' us.
I will remind everyone that the FDA does not evaluate claims of herbs and herbal remedies. And this information is not meant to treat, diagnose or cure any disease or ailment, but is meant as educational information that hopefully can serve you in your exploration and research.

Hello... I just came across your channel and saw your sites.. you have some cool products and you do some cool stuff with your community and productions. Have you ever looked into or heard of a grant that will give you 10k per month for life in google ads spend? It seems like your company would be perfect for the program and it could quite possibly expand your reach 2 or 3 x if not more. If you are interested in watching a video explaining it in detail let me know. Its definitely outside the box but its worth looking at

Definitely create more content about herbs, such as how to harvest, store, process,... Very interesting! You have completely returned to your interests from during your childhood. I think the alienation of these interests later in life aren't so strange. When we are young adults, we are so influenced by our environment and the "societal demands" that our inner voice is overshadowed. Fortunately, sooner or later it will surface again; perhaps many midlife crises are a result of this. I followed somewhat the same path. Everything started with insects and birds in childhood, to move up to plants and vegetable gardening during the teenage years. Eventually I studied economics and started working as a sales representative. It gave me no satisfaction. Luckily, I came to realize that I did need to follow my passion from during my younger years and make a career out of it. I am now 29 years old and have been retrained as a landscape architect. Greetings from Belgium.

Re: labelling jars, especially with important notes like "for external use only." I got a package of grease pencils (aka china markers) years ago for marking smooth surfaces like glass jars and can lids. I also use them for marking popsicle sticks for seed starting - they don't bleed or fade like markers. For dark glass or dark liquids the yellow and white markings show up really well. The most important thing when writing on something shiny like glass is that the surface is perfectly clean - rubbing it with a cloth right before you try writing helps. It takes direct friction to remove the marks (a little soap and warm water can help).

Very excited to see more herb content on this channel! 🌿 And, Summer, you are such a great educator and advocate on this topic, so thank you!! Almost three years ago, I suffered sudden cardiac arrest. My life was quite literally saved by modern medicine. But the entire ordeal also opened my eyes to just how broken our healthcare system really is in the U.S. and I have since been on a personal journey to take a more active role in nurturing and caring for my health. Herbal remedies have been a large part of this process. I still have so much to learn about herbalism, and I very much look forward to learning from, and alongside, you!

I have the same indentations, from my teeth, on my tongue and have been trying to figure out what the cause is. Please keep us posted on this. I've been trying to tongue diagnose for like 6mnths on and off, trying to learn. Thanks for the content!

    • @FlockFingerLakes
      @FlockFingerLakes  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, the indentations are from the teeth. I've noticed some mornings they are more indented and others not so much. I tend to clench my jaw at night (not grind, but clench) per the indentations on tongue and teeth, so imagine for me, it can be something anxiety-related at night. Dreams, perhaps? Day's stress? Just one of the ways that can be useful observations to one's day-to-day health and wellbeing.

Thank you for this video! I love that you rely on science as well as the history of plants' usages.
I normally depend on Western medicine, but I have had an issue with restless leg and difficulty sleeping that I didn't want to use pharmaceuticals for. I did some research and found that golden milk should help with those types of issues. I tried it and do not have issues with restless leg or problems sleeping the nights that I use it
I now make my own golden milk with tumeric, ashwaganda, ginger, cinnamon, pepper and camomile to great effect! I feel the ashwaganda and tumeric have the greatest effect.
I have been so impressed with ashwaganda that I grew it in my zone 6, Utah garden. It grew beautifully, and I got a big harvest. I did need to start it really early indoors and up pot it to gallon containers before I put it outside to give it a head start due to our short growing season. Definitely try growing it if that is an herb that you use.

Great episode Summer! As a pharmacist, I’ve always preferred to recommend herbs over mass otc products, where appropriate. Have you looked at the German Pharmacopeia regarding herbs. Herbs and homeopathy are integrated into their main stream medical practice, unlike here. Therefore, they’ve done much more extensive double blind studies on so many herbal remedies. It’s changed my views on some products that I previously recommended. Keep up the great work.👏👏

    • @FlockFingerLakes
      @FlockFingerLakes  ปีที่แล้ว +3

I haven't stepped up to purchase the German Pharmacopeia but I do come across some of the peer-reviewed literature that comes out of places like Germany as well as some medical botany books. Mainly, however, I find it coming out of Asia. There's definitely a dearth of information on some herbs and not on others. And more double blind studies are truly needed (and could bear repeating) in some instances. As you pointed out, Germany is more regulated and focused on quality control due to the fact that they incorporate it into their medical practices. Interestingly, just yesterday, however, I read a research report (out of Germany) that did a quality control assessment from different brands off the shelf, and lo and behold they varied widely! I think this may yield something that is a bit more complex, which is to say, plants are also not clones of one another. They (and their inherent chemistry) vary naturally and widely-depending on where they are growing, whether they are a natural variation or cultivated variety, and even how old they are...Makes it even more challenging to standardize. Even in a country that opts for better standardization.

Definitely more about herbs. I am also been into it since I was a child. I am from Eastern Europe and many herbs/weeds were used as medicine or as support for immune system.
I live in Canada now and to this day I will turn to herbs first before I use any modern medication.
I would like to learn more of cause and like to see the search links you prefer to use for proper information.
Do you keep some type of herbal journal that helps you to quickly find the right herb for the condition that you want to attend?
I love all of your videos on both channels, Summer. Continue with your great work. Thank you.

    • @FlockFingerLakes
      @FlockFingerLakes  ปีที่แล้ว +2

I definitely keep an herb journal. I gather from as many sources as possible and then cross-reference in science journals and equivalents because I like to understand the mechanisms of how herbs work in the way that they do. Kind of like reverse engineering. The challenge with that, however, is that herb qualities and chemistry can vary quite widely-depending on variations, cultivas, and even where the same species grows, and whether it's wild or cultivated, so that's always something to take into consideration. When it comes to practical use outside of my own personal use, I try to summarize / simplify things in our medicine cabinet with "if you have this symptom - then use this herb" charts for my partners here, so it doesn't confuse them. Still exploring ways to make it easier for others. Thanks for sharing and your interest in this topic.

You put it in a very good way....Western medicine has been around for 200 or so years, but Eastern herbal remedies have been around for thousands of years. I don't know much about herbal tinctures, but it is something that is respected more now...and is being further researched. I do take supplements and try to watch what I eat and drink. I do need to exercise more...🙄..guilty of that. You are right about the expense of our health care in the US. It is utterly ridiculous. So far, I try to resist medications that I feel aren't really necessary, unless there's a serious illness., of course. Knock on wood, for now. The side effects of these medications are terrifying. While they are treating a health issue, then something else negative arises that could be a side effect. Plus, the expense is crazy. This was very interesting and some further education needs to be done and researched. BTW, you are quite the artist! Your artwork is beautiful....go back to that again. Thank you...

I finally tasted Ashwagandha ... but I don't care for the taste. I'll stick with Lavender for destressing.
"Smelling like a horse" !! I love it's name though. The smell of horse flesh has always calmed my soul. Growing up I'd go out and hang with the horses when feeling depressed or upset from school. After moving out I'd go home to be with my horses for the same reason. Now that they're in heaven I have gone to local horse farms to get that smell back!
I use turmeric as well. I also use my american witchhazel as well for anti inflammatory. Both as teas when I get headaches (mine are tension headaches)

I just this Fall I started growing Ashwaganda and Ginkgo in my outdoor apothecary!!
(Which actually is my entire garden!)
The ashwaganda plant is quite small, I'm in zone 8, and it's still in a pot. It's looking quite sad with all our yo-yo cold/hot weather right now!
And it's only going to get colder!
I'm not sure it will make it thru the Winter.
Such is the journey of a gardener though, right!
(I might be ordering another one this Spring...)
    Try, and try again...
I love taking ashwaganda in tincture form.
    And-
I find it very fulfilling to grow my own supplements!!
    Especially Turmeric!!
    It's helped my gut exponentially!!
And so far, growing it has been a real journey!
My zone 8 IS quite warm, but it's not tropical here in the Wintertime, so...
When I decided to grow it,
I went down a Turmeric rabbit hole early last Spring trying to figure out where to buy my "stock" of Turmeric from.
(I live in the burbs, so I've not got tons of room to "grow crops"!)
I ended up getting 3 varieties, from 3 different places!
I haven't been this excited about growing a plant in a loooong time!
It was like Christmas for me when it finally arrived!
While most of my gardening style leans toward "survival of the fittest" (only bcuz that's how I survive all the gardening chores!) I find myself focusing on making sure I don't kill all my Turmeric over the Winter.
I didn't harvest it this Fall because I'm trying to eventually grow enough to supply myself with enough for an entire year.
And that's A LOT of Turmeric!!!
So Turmeric has somewhat taken over my gardening thoughts this year.
    Side note -
    It's also a GORGEOUS plant!!
    And then there's the Ginkgo...
I have waited for years to buy a Ginkgo tree only bcuz it's so slow growing.
    And therefore,
I wanted to buy a larger tree to start with.
I'm no longer a young person, and my thinking was that it would be better to buy BIG, since I don't actually have the time to watch it grow into a large tree.
Well, all those years without one have now passed me by.
How backwards was my thinking in THAT process!!
The Black Friday sales this year talked me into buying it!!
I finally kicked myself into gear, and changed my p.o.v.
into thinking that it's better to at least have a small one NOW, than nothing at all!
    If,
    or I should say WHEN,
the opportunity presents itself for me to buy a larger Gingko tree, I'll always have room to accept it at that time.
Meanwhile, I'm now waiting for my little dwarf Ginkgo tree to arrive, and take its place in my plant family!!
Since it's a dwarf tree, I'll never be thinking it "should be bigger", and therefore I can enjoy it for what it is.
Perhaps "accept it for what it is" would be a better phrase in this instance!
    The result is -
    I'm SOOOO VERY EXCITED
    to have it!!!
Gingko tinctures are definitely in my future!!
And for the 2nd time this year, Christmas has come early for me!!
I feel like a giddy child as I wait for Santa's delivery driver to bring that Ginkgo home!!
    hehehehe!!!
I very much enjoy all your videos, and I could talk all day long about growing an apothecary garden!
    Yours, mine, just ANYBODY'S!!!
    Plants ARE Amazing!!!
    And speaking of tinctures...
One side of making tinctures has really captured my attention.
    And that's WHEN to harvest.
What I mean is, take Gingko for instance.
My original thinking WAS that with a large tree, I could harvest green leaves all thru the growing year, and then dry them, and consume them that way in capsules.
And then I started thinking about making tinctures instead.
I guess my point is that in my research I see most people waiting until late Summer, just before the leaves turn yellow, to harvest for tincture making with Ginkgo.
So the interesting thing is, just as you mentioned how a more stressed plant will have more "medicine" in it, (which btw, I've found that same info in my research too)
is that in addition to WHERE and HOW it's been growing, each plant has certain times of year when it's best to harvest.
I was just thinking that might make for a very interesting video topic?
Anyway, Thanks for letting us take a peek into your own apothecary today!!
And yes, insurance is a whole other animal, I agree!!
    Good video! ❤️🌱💚

In regards to Ashwagandha I noted it looks similar to our native groundcherry here, Physalis virginiana. They are, after all, in the same family. Knowing that, I've started to look into the chemistry of both plants because the groundcherry is native and more suitable to this climate here. Lo and behold there is some overlap in the chemistry. There's still quite a bit of research that I need to do on the topic especially since some of the plant parts are considered poisonous, but seems very promising as a potentially native analog. In regards to harvesting plants, there are typically great recommendations as to best times to forage / harvest, and it goes back to really sensible ideas. When it's spring, much of the energy of the plants are going to the growing tips. If a plant is about to bloom, then the energy gets put in flowers. If the plant has a tuber or bulb, then they start to store all the good stuff before winter hits. You generally pick the part of the plant when it has the most energy. So a tuberous plant where you harvest the tuber or root, is often in the autumn. If you're harvesting green parts it's typically when they are growing and before flowering; and if you're harvesting flowers, then generally at peak flower time.... things like that are good rules of thumb. Anyway, thanks for sharing your stories here too.

So interesting about the Ground Cherry/Ashwaganda connection!!
I would absolutely be into that info if you ever want to do a video on it!
And yes, the general rules of harvesting.
Those are the same things I was thinking, and wondering about too.
Which I guess is why it seemed a bit different when I saw people harvesting the leaves of the Ginkgo in the Fall.
When following the general harvesting guidelines, I would've thought the Spring (or even Summer?) would be better for leaf harvest...
But there's probably more to it with the Ginkgo that I don't know!
Some ancient secret passed down thru the generations...
(There goes my imagination waxing poetic on harvesting Ginkgo leaves for tinctures!)

Yes please! I am very interested in herbal medicine. I'd also like to hear your opinion with regard to essential oils. I've always been a proponent of them but reading further I am beginning to wonder if the concentration is too much for our bodies to handle. i.e. 1 drop of lemon essential oil is equivalent to about four lemons. Normally a person wouldn't sit and eat 4 lemons rind and all. I have begun to look at them more to be used in more extreme situations rather than everyday use, like pharmaceuticals. I am ok with pharmaceuticals in more extreme cases. I haven't even taken aspirin in over 5 years. After having had cancer, going through chemo and radiation I'm not looking to harm my body any further and as such am curious as to your opinion on EO's.

Thank you for your focus on this topic! I am very interested in herbs as medicine and how to grow, process, and store them. It amazes me that humans in the "developed" world have drifted away from utilizing food and herbs as the primary method to promote better health. I've found that in many cases, herbs are far superior to over-the-counter medications for many issues. For example, my "moon tea" blend is the only thing I've found that reliably and effectively alleviates the uncomfortable symptoms of endometriosis. It's free of any negative side effects that one might get from modern medications, costs a lot less, and as a bonus, it tastes great! :)

I got some horrible-tasting curative Chinese teas to take for tinnitus. They are cooked and strained dried leaves, etc. I never felt better in my life. The Tinnitus didn't go away but stress was minimized and sleep had a new quality. Then I went to a Homeopathic Doctor. He gave me some things which took away some very loud, irregularly occurring noises. Both doctors retired and moved away. It's time to go to East Indian Medicine. I watch one, on TH-cam, but most of the remedies are not in the grocery store...yet.

I'm looking forward to more content from your channel about herbs. I like the way you present info and anything outside is shot so beautifully. I got into herbs from a TCM practitioner & they've made a huge difference for me at various times without the often rough side effects of modern treatments. I'd like to see how tinctures are done (without alcohol too) and how to incorporate herbs deliciously in cooking, & how that affects their effects (!) vs processing in other ways. As to our "healthcare" system - M4A all the way (I've been arguing about this w the comfortably covered for 30 years), as well as ending subsidies for toxic food, and early real food education (bring on & Alice Waters style school gardens & modified Home Ec classes). My heart goes out to anyone trying to get useful health insurance on their own, I've been there, it's financially horrifying & almost as much per month as a house payment. I know lots of people who hustle in astounding ways, or just drop "normal" life entirely, just to get coverage. BTW, we are not coming out of Covid despite some very frustrating & apparently effective efforts to make us believe we are. It's very much present and the appalling lack of mitigation efforts will keep it that way (as well as introduce us all to Long Covid, either personally or in our social circles). Obviously, as we learn more about what afflicts us, a robust immune system is more crucial than ever. So yes, please, talk often and thoroughly about herbs. One more thing - it would be very cool to see what houseplants, or any plants, are NOT toxic to pets, lists I've seen over the years are pretty short.

Summer, I have an autoimmune disorder and I believe in herbs for good health however my specialist steer me away from making or taking herbal remedies. I had to have a transplant and apparently a lot of the herbs used for a health person can be toxic to my system. Are there, and can you recommend a away (book) to know which would be mild to my system yet useful without a toxicity to my liver.

I would be doing you a disservice if I made recommendations online. I would, however, seek out someone who may be trained in both eastern and western medicine who has the fluidity of knowing both worlds as it relates to the specificity of your condition.

My neighbors as a group, are Multi-cultural and multi-lingual. Last summer, one woman was collecting some part of Stinging nettle outside, to make a liquid, to apply on her head to promote lovely hair. They also have used slightly fermented rice water. The Mom and daughter have beautiful thick hair. DNA or plant remedies? See Channel 'Cardsu.' One of her recent videos deals with using plants to get energy. Yes, let us see more. We can learn a lot and get inspired.

Valerian ... Is that the origin of what we know as Valium?

    • @FlockFingerLakes
      @FlockFingerLakes  ปีที่แล้ว

To my knowledge-no. I think Valium is Diazepam which is a benzodiazepine derivative. Valerian is like benzodiazepine in action but I believe binds differently in the body, so the mechanism of how it works is different (though its performance is similar). If you probe the literature, you'll see that actually there are quite a few double blind studies comparing diazepam to valerian and seeing reactions. This study, for example, only had 60 patients, but you can see results comparing those two here: eprints.mums.ac.ir/1682/1/PSJ_Volume%204_Issue%204_Pages%20434-440.pdf

Just my opinion, but I think pharmaceuticals block research into herbal remedies . Pharmaceuticals are making big money off of the drugs they are producing and who wants their source of revenue taken away. While I also think for some illnesses there is probably not a herbal equivalent ,so in turn we do need the pharmaceuticals for some of our medication and the convenience of exact dosages . It’s a fine line, but for most common illnesses I think herbal is a better way to help heal our bodies without the use manufactured ingredients. Just my opinion 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄💚🙃

Considering that nearly half of their budget ($2.7BN) is funded by the pharmaceutical companies that it regulates (Ref: today.uconn.edu/2021/05/why-is-the-fda-funded-in-part-by-the-companies-it-regulates-2/, www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2021/08/27/fact-check-some-fdas-budget-does-come-industry-funding/5572076001/) it's a very valuable point. ;)
