  • We're slowly getting around to more landscape projects and as we finally get to enjoy the newly renovated front porch of the Meadow House, we thought it would make sense to plant some beautiful fruiting and flowering trees for some visual interest and wildlife potential in the meadow area.

A weeping cherry! How elegant is that?!! Thanks for introducing us to that one. Is it possible to do an update on the pond life, without disturbing the birds too much? We used to peek into Bobolink nests, in a marsh. They didn't seem to get upset much. Glad you hit Earth, under the Moon's surface, while planting. That is surely a present, from the Universe, for your great efforts. 🎁

Love the tortoise in the beginning of this video! What a cutie. :) The progress is coming along very nicely, with new trees being planted. You have so many options and opportunities!

Ummm actually....That's not a tortoise but a turtle belonging to the species Chrysemys picta, commonly known as the Painted turtle, it might also be an Eastern painted turtle which is a subspecies and its range is East part of United states. The tortoise you said meanwhile, are only terrestrial meaning, they may get wet but will specifically avoid water as they are not great swimmers, usually found on arid, dry shrublands. Meanwhile turtles are more aquatic, but will utilize both land and water. Terrapins are also turtles but even more aquatic, usually in freshwater habitats. Lastly, sea turtles are fully aquatic and are only found in saltwater habitats, but only on occasions where they have to lay eggs and so they come up shore for a brief moment ☝️🤓

Summer, as ever, you *really* don't need to add fertiliser. Digging a hole 2-3 times the hole of the root ball is an old school, unneeded way. Now we just dig a hole the size of the rootball.

Seeing you plant these trees and use compost and manure made me curious, how're you getting on with your homemade compost system? I remember the video you shared where Sander built that amazing multi bay system, I'd really enjoy an update on how it's going. Just to be clear, I'm not criticising the use of bagged or Espoma products, they're really useful and handy when you're having to lug water, plants, potting mix about a large site. I imagine you're generating a fair amount of your own compost too now.

BTW rising sun redbud can be a little hard to keep over winters if the temps are bad. Quite frequently will probably have tip die off over winters and may just need cleaned up in spring

Thank you Ms. Summer. Aren’t you flirting with danger on the growing zone for some of those trees ? I believe you said that you are a zone 5 and I noticed that some of the trees are hardy to zone 6 ? 💐💚🙃

just wondring if it wouldnt be better to free the roots, speread them radially and use at least 50-90% of the native soil around the roots to plant them in rather than using the existing plugs
the roots may have already circled inside the pots and that may stunt the growth.

How successful would parasitic plants such as yellow rattle be at controlling invasive grass?

string trimming around tree trunks is a good way to kill them. Surprised you don't know that
