I'm not surprised that you didn't mention ghosts no longer being resisted by steel after gen 5. It was a pretty good buff, but it was barely worth mentioning most of the time. Definitely huge to be neutral to a type that STILL resists half the type chart.
Maybe Gengar lost levitate because of the huge pair it had to haul around because it had to carry the ghost typing for well over a decade making it too heavy to float.
@@Wings_Of_Nightfall I don’t know it seems weird that something like magnazone which by definition is normally suspended in the air yet something like an electross can levitate but magnazone can’t

Stuff like Steel no longer RESISTING Ghost (probably because of Aegislash being Steel/Ghost. COULD YOU IMAGINE!?) and Pursuit basically disappearing after Gen 7 also makes them harder to consistently answer nowadays. Especially without Pursuit. Lol.
I feel like the removal of steels ghost resist was a mistake and this is coming from someone who loves the type. Dark was one thing but they could have removed a different type from steels numerous resistances that could have benefited from a buff like bug or grass or buffed a weaker type like ice with a ghost resist but instead they made ghost strong enough to basically hit almost every type in the game at minimum neutrally and with how strong and reliable some ghost type moves are, yea its inevitable.
Gholdengo was absolutely necessary for me when I was trying to catch Spiritomb. Its cheery and friendly disposition (competitively busted ability) prevented the poor, sad Spiritomb from self-harming (using Curse or Memento) so I could give it the psychological help it needed (stuffing it into a computer for eternity for dex completion).
This is good to keep in mind when shiny hunting mons that can off themselves. Considering I failed a Curly form Tatsugiri via Memento, I appreciate this immensely.
Ghost has become like dragon in gen 5 now, it doesn't interact with the type chart much so they can just fire off crazy neutral attacks cause the mons are so strong
Misdreavus not being Poison type, plus having access to Perish Song and Pain Split made it more than just budget Gengar in gen 2, it was a legitimately good spinblocker in its own right
As a lover of Ghost Types I'm generally amazed at the history of Ghost Types. As a kid I loved Ghost and Poison Pokemon. Which obviously meant Gengar was number 1. To this day Gengar has always found it's way on my Ghost and Championship team. Gen 9 had so many great Ghost Types to choose from ranging from Goldengo to Flutter Mane to Ceruledge 💖
I wish Houndstone was Rock/Ghost. I don’t know if this would have made it any less busted but it’s the only Ghost combo we don’t have. Not to mention Houndstone being part Rock would have also made sense thematically too.
Being a rock type gives you additional sp def when in sandstorm, so having that type can help houndstone to take moves like shadow ball and dark pulse in a pinch.
I remember when USUM were being teased and Stakataka was revealed how I felt that "surely this tower with creepy Eldritch eyes must be the first Rock/Ghost type" I am still disappointed to this day
An important part of ghost types (for competitive) is their immunity to rapid spin, before defog in gen 6 ghost types blocked the only form of removing hazards like stealth rocks and spikes Also an important change in gen 8 is the removal of pursuit, which would trap any ghost types trying to switch out of a dark type threatening them
I figure the real life reason that ghost was physical was to counter psychic since ghosts wouldn't put a dent if they had to contend with psychic's high gen 1 special bulk only for the immunity glitch to make it not matter. In-universe idk tho it makes no sense
It can't be overstated how good having Ghost STAB is. Only two types in the game can comfortably take a Shadow Ball or Poltergeist, and it's not too tough a task to just slot a Fighting-type move on your team or give your Ghost-type Will-O-Wisp to cripple the Normal and Dark-types that commonly run physical attacks. Not to mention all of the cracked Ghost-types that they keep introducing: Mega Gengar, Aegislash, Marshadow, Blacephalon, Dragapult, Spectrier, Calyrex-Shadow, Hisuian Zoroark, Basculegion, Skeledirge, Annihilape, Houndstone, Flutter Mane, Gholdengo. Game Freak, please give Ghost at least one more resist
Honestly out of all the types, ghost definitely makes the most sense to be the least resisted. Dark’s resistance to ghost can basically only be explained by “type balancing”
Aegislash was also nerfed in gen 8 where it's stat total went from 520 down to 500 along with it's signature move King's Shield also getting nerfed, tbh these changes where justified cause this ethereal sword wasn't balanced
How did you not mentioned the removal of Pursuit? which is huge for the Ghost-types as they're no longer punished for switching on a Dark-type EDIT: As well as to an lesser extent Poltergeist in Gen 8 to give the physical ghost mons the boost they desperately needed (except the already good ones Aegislash, Mimikyu nor Dragapult), even when most of them are still PU or Untired
You forgot to mention something about Banette in gen 3. While it still wasn't really great, because it was the only ghost type with super high attack, it actually was able to use shadow ball incredibly effectively, the best stab user of the move.
The reason ghost was a physical type is Lick. Because of all the things you could make a ghost do, a lick was one of the only things they could think of.
For Gen 7, Alolan Marowak made it so that, at least in the Let’s Go games, you had a Gen 1 Ghost type that was not weak to Psychic. As for Gen 9, I agree that Hisuian Zoroark will be a necessary counter to Annihilape. I also look forward to Hisuian Typhlosion, given that it’s signature move (Infernal Parade) is basically a slightly weaker version of Hex but with it’s own built-in 30% chance of burning the target to allow Internal Parade to deal double damage once the target is Burned. Plus, White-Stripe Basculin can also learn Last Respects as an Egg Move, so maybe Basculegion (at least the male form given its higher ATK stat) could also potentially be a threat.
Great video Lot of people still think Ghost isn't as great since Dark types have similar offensive potential against Ghost and Psychic types Though Fairy type has definitely made it difficult for Dark types defensively
I feel like Fairies, alongside the general strength of newer ghosts, have caused the meta to shift and allow ghost types to haunt the tiers. In practice only a normal or Dark type can hold a Ghost type back, and the former rarely ends up being in the higher tiers and Dark gets an annihilated by Fairy types making them hard to bring along.
@@Castersvarog yeah Normal isn't too great offensively since it hits everything for neutral damage except for ghost, rock and steel, but Normal does benefit from usually having wide move pools to make up for that

I think the reason that folks don't point at gohst and say 'it's broken' is because the type itself is not broken. The pokemon of the type are broken, but the type itself is fine. The immunities profile is very good, but the two worst abusers of that typing are also steel types, and it was their steel-typing that made them problematicaly bulky, and are known for having abilities which should not have been made, and signature moves which exacerbated that problem. Yeah in the case of dragon the two worst dragons pre fairy type were Altaria and Druddigon which if you compare to the worst of literally any other type they are basically legendaries 😂
Honestly ghost types have always been amazing. Theyre the single most underrated type of all time. Like they only have 2 weaknesses, one of which is itself, so your opponent cant switch one in to counter yours, cuz its just gunna fuckin EXPLODE! And the only things that can even THINK about switching in, are dark types which resist, and normal types which are immune. Thats it. Also they fully resist normal and fighting moves, so switched in normal types need a good coverage option just for ghosts or its gunna do nothing. Everything else is gunna take a massive chunk of damage from ghost moves. Not to mention ghost type moves have always been great, hex+toxic spikes is a 130 base power move with no drawbacks, shadow ball is solid power that can lower their special defense at high odds, shadow claw is a medium power move with high crit odds, shadow sneak for stab priority, and now theres last respects and rage fist both of which can go up to 300 or 350 base power respectively. Add stab to every single one of those, and the fact that ~85% of pokemon are completely unable to switch into those moves, plus the abundence of really good ghost types like gengar, mimikyu, dusclops/dusknoir, rotom, spectrier/calyrex shadow, dragapult, MF AEGISLASH, and pretty much all of the new gen 9 ghosts, like ghost has always been a secret top tier, but no one really thought about it like that.
I think one reason for Ghost's being broken in Gen9 is Normal is ONLY type not get a paradox pokemon. All other types have at least a paradox pokemon with that type. The ursaluna with bloody moon is now banned in monotype along with Chen piao. I think that a huge buff to a normal type like ursaluna with bloody moon. Even with nerfed bloody moon that can be used only after 2 turns, its still a menace especially if ursaluna stat boost by calm mind.
Gamefreak sure likes pairing Ghost with Grass. we still don't have a Ghost Rock. & despite fixing Shadow Ball to be special they sure like making physical ghost types & new physical ghost moves. Ominous Wind, Hex, & Shadow Ball are still our only shared special ghost type attacks.
Ghost being my second favorite type after poison it’s insane how good they are now, I just wish poison got the same treatment. I can’t wait to see a video on dark types or fairy types I feel they’ve gotten better.
@@BladeEdge86 it has but not enough we need more poison/flying types crobat is the only one or better ways to deal with ground types like type variety or wider moves. they need to hit more then just fairy and grass super effectively. I mean it’s Poison it should affect more then 2 things. Also I feel its fair poison types should have a type of terrain.
Hisuian Zorua/Zoroark is the first time I ever genuinely wanted a ghost type on my team in a playthrough. Having 3 immunities and only 1 weakness is NOT something I can just ignore
I think Ghost being physical is because a ghost can touch you. Like you feel a ghosts presence. There's also poltergeists who can possess objects and use them to throw them at others. Again , this is pure speculation but it's what made sense to me.
Ok, I believe I must speak up on behalf of Brambleghast. I feel in love with this tumbleweed pokemon and it gas since been quite valuable to me. I run strength sap, rapid spin, phantom force and power whip, and it does wonders when going up against physical foes. I acknowledge Ghost/Grass is not the best type however I would argue in terms of both stats and appearance Brambleghast is top quality.
I slapped a covert cloak on my Gholdengo making him essentially immune to anything that isn't direct damage. He was my favorite mon to use for stall tactics and to heal up other members of my team
Another thing worth mentioning is that ghosts are the only type that can block rapid spin, so they got a lot better as the games went on with the increased presence of hazards, especially once stealth rocks were introduced in gen 4
I'm surprised you didn't mention how in Gen 6 onwards, Steel no longer resisted ghost, and unlike Dark, ghosts didn't get any nerfs to compensate for this, so it was a straight buff. Now, only dark resists ghosts (and normal is still immune). Considering how dark types got crimped by fairies and how uncommon normal is in competitive, its not exactly a mystery why ghosts feel so dominant. Oh, and as if ghosts weren't dominant enough already, they took out pursuit
You know Ghost Type has become my Favourite type along with Normal, Water and Dragon. Especially over the past couple of generations with pokemon like Mimikyu, Ceruledge and Flutter Mane just to name a few.
Why ghosts are broken? Crazy new pokemons with crazy stats, abilities or moves, sometimes both (gholdengo), check Removal of pursuit, check Steel type no longer resists ghost meaning its the best neutral attacking type tied with dragon, except normal types aren't as good as fairy so its the best, check Probably the fourth best type in the game behind Fairy, Steel and Water
Shadow Ball on special side, Shadow Claw and Shadow Sneak on physical side. They gave Ghost-type such reliable moves early on with such amazing coverage.
Just want to mention about ghost being physical: remember the first (and only) ghost type attack when this was decided in gen 1 was Lick, very obviously a physical move. when more attacks got added gen 2 and 3, it was too late, damage was done.
You forgot about the buff to rapid spin .due to the buff to rapid spin the ghost immunity to normal gained more importance and it became a must for stall teams
As much as I love dual Normal types, I need to agree with the people who say H. Zoroark is a bit overrated and won't be top tier. Tyranitar stops it in everything it tries to do.
I like how Sableye has been one of the most consistently amazing Pokémon in Pokémon Go pvp since that released. It’s just one of the best neutralist in pvp
If you ask me, I'd still count the Rotom forms as ghosts, they're just possessing various appliances, so therefor they take on the attributes of those appliances. I guess all of Rotom's Ghost and Electric power is going towards turning a refrigerator into something it can use in a Pokémon battle.
I like how Jon is telling everyone get scared because Ghost/Normal Hisuian Zoroark is on its way, but completely fails to mention the arrival of Basculegion having access to the move last respects
You seriously undermentioned the removal of pursuit.... That is the number 1 reason why ghost types are much better now. Ttar used to be able to trap and kill ghost types pretty easily
Effects of Pursuit not being present AND Defog not existing in Gen 9. Defog allowed you to avoid running rapid spin for hazard removal, it is so weird because gamefreak surely added defog after seeing Ghosts walling rapid spin.
I love ghost types! Not the biggest fan of string cheese man but we will accept him as a cousin. We already did with rotom so why not? Houndstone is great though.
As someone who has used Ghost types exclusively since Gen3, every Gen has been incredible for the typing, gen 4 changed everything and from there it just got better
You forgot to mention Basculegion as a threat we are yet to see. Great abilities and access to Last Respects. Would not be surprised if it gets banned.
I think Psychic should be the next type tackled it went the opposite route of ghost it was obviously broken in gen 1 but psychic actually got worse over time due to types like ghost dark and bug getting better as well as fairy doing its job of handling fighting types as well as taking care of psychics biggest weakness dark
Ghost type are right by ice types. I know ice is a Glass cannon. Ghost is a nice middle in the road Froslass,Sableye, and Dusclops. Decidueye and dhelmise were great to.
Honestly Shadow Ball optimizes ghost types so much. Having such a strong, consistent special move with minimal draw back other than Normal Immunity and 1/2 damage to Dark types makes it pretty spam-able.
Misdreavus wasn't good in Gen 2 coz Ghost type, it was a niche choice that saw OU usage because of Thunder + Perish Trap strats. It's also able to use Thief, which allows stall teams to win far more easily through passive damage. As for Ghost being physical, it makes COMPLETE sense, since the only Ghost move that would perform a damage calc in Gen 1 (when Ghost was made) was Lick - a move that SHOULD be physical. The question isn't "why was ghost physical", the question is "why was dark special"
dark being special in gen's 2 & 3 made little sense, but was especially bad in gen 3 cause there where several physical dark types that got completely screwed over by it, Absol being the easiest example
@@bulborb8756 dark type attack in gen 2 is what? Bite and thief? And dark type Pokemon are Sneasel Murkrow Tyranitar and Houndoom. GF looks at those and think yeah let make dark special.
I think Ghost was physical in the first few gens due to Lick being the only damaging move for Ghost in Gen 1. If you think about it, it wouldn't make sense for Lick to be a special move at all in Gen 1 logic and then that trend persisted until the split
The fact that they really introduced one ghost type in gen 2 is such a huge insult. They could have made Marowak a ghost type to go with its lore and they just didnt.
Ghost types would be balanced if they still had pursuit in the game. It astounds me that they took the move out it’s just bad game design. Don’t limit counter play and options, it just turns a meta game stale and people won’t play it anymore
Ghost being Physical was so weird to me. Why make a type so centered around the ethereal and supernatural physical. What about the Gengar line and Misdrevaus screamed "yeah these guys throw hands". Gastly and Misdrevaus don't even have hands
Ghost is inmune to rapid spin in a generation based on hazard abuse also literally the best two Pokémon in the tier (based on usage) are Ghost types. Gen 9 in similar to gen 2 in the hazards aproach but gen 9 have way more and better Ghost types
i specifically sesrched youtube to explain why ghost types are as good as people say they are precisely because as a casual player who only knows a bit of comp, their rise to the top was kinda sudden for me. i always perceieved ghost types as just 'there'. theyre not as good but not bad either. just in the middle
Misdreavus isn't just good in Gen 2 because it walls gengar. Mainly it's ability to perish trap and spread annoying status. Snorlax could hit it with Shadow Ball if it really wanted to Ghosts were also dominant in the lower tiers of Gen 3, mainly misdreavus and banette in uu Sableye and Haunter in NU
I *always* try to include a Ghost type on my team when feasable... though I'm starting to think this might not be the best idea depending on the region and/or the Pokemon of choice. :/

Ghost being my second favorite type after poison it’s insane how good they are now, I just wish poison got the same treatment. I can’t wait to see a video on dark types or fairy types I feel they’ve gotten better.
tru, I think the closest poison comes to being good is toxapex. I could be wrong though, don't use them much.
Poison has improved, but still has a long ways to go. Toxitricity is a good example of the kind of potential poison can have.
@@andrewharris1344 i think poison should hit fighting for super effective damage, should hit bug as well but bug should not get another weakness
@@coca_0146 a lot of people say it should hit flying and water super effectively which I think works.
Gholdengo and Ceruledge are some of my favorite Pokémon ever after I had gone so many games without ever using a Ghost type
Again , this is pure speculation but it's what made sense to me.
in fact there's so much more physical ghost moves then special ones, i mean it's odd but whatever
now that the paranormal has been done it's time to do the normal
Ok, I believe I must speak up on behalf of Brambleghast. I feel in love with this tumbleweed pokemon and it gas since been quite valuable to me. I run strength sap, rapid spin, phantom force and power whip, and it does wonders when going up against physical foes. I acknowledge Ghost/Grass is not the best type however I would argue in terms of both stats and appearance Brambleghast is top quality.
Always loved the ghost type they slowly went from my 2nd fav to my top fav over the years
Annihilape is the only reason to solo 6 star raids right now.
I slapped a covert cloak on my Gholdengo making him essentially immune to anything that isn't direct damage. He was my favorite mon to use for stall tactics and to heal up other members of my team
“Only resist bug and poison” and are IMMUNE to normal and fighting lol
This reminds me of MandKTV's Then Vs Now series (which kinda got left behind)
Crazy new pokemons with crazy stats, abilities or moves, sometimes both (gholdengo), check
Removal of pursuit, check
Steel type no longer resists ghost meaning its the best neutral attacking type tied with dragon, except normal types aren't as good as fairy so its the best, check
Probably the fourth best type in the game behind Fairy, Steel and Water
Shadow Ball on special side, Shadow Claw and Shadow Sneak on physical side. They gave Ghost-type such reliable moves early on with such amazing coverage.
Ghost has been my favorite type for years and I am so happy they’ve been getting more and more amazing with every release.
"Gen 4 was where it really began."
Dusknoir: (cries in the corner as its pre-evo asserts dominance over it)
Just want to mention about ghost being physical: remember the first (and only) ghost type attack when this was decided in gen 1 was Lick, very obviously a physical move. when more attacks got added gen 2 and 3, it was too late, damage was done.
6:15 _"Jellicent's Cursed Body disabled Giga Drain!"_
Me: (remembers how frustrated I felt when this happened to me three days ago) 😡
You forgot about the buff to rapid spin .due to the buff to rapid spin the ghost immunity to normal gained more importance and it became a must for stall teams
the amount of pokemon tera ghost in gen 9 is unexpectedly alot, just those immunity to fake out and other common threat is so good
As much as I love dual Normal types, I need to agree with the people who say H. Zoroark is a bit overrated and won't be top tier. Tyranitar stops it in everything it tries to do.
Yet another day of learning how broken Gen 1 were and also making me laugh at all the Genwunners being in complete denial
With my 2nd favorite Pokémon being Haunter……this video hit home lol
I love he nicknamed shiny quagsire “majin buu”
You seriously undermentioned the removal of pursuit.... That is the number 1 reason why ghost types are much better now. Ttar used to be able to trap and kill ghost types pretty easily
Effects of Pursuit not being present AND Defog not existing in Gen 9. Defog allowed you to avoid running rapid spin for hazard removal, it is so weird because gamefreak surely added defog after seeing Ghosts walling rapid spin.
Am i the only one who thinks gholdengo looks like the cheese string guy from the cheese string commercials?
I love ghost types! Not the biggest fan of string cheese man but we will accept him as a cousin. We already did with rotom so why not? Houndstone is great though.
Is That Why People love Hex Maniac
I'm glad my love for Ghost types since Gen 1 is finally playing off.
How is gargancl in competitive so far because with it's ability and salt cure it seems like a good counter for ghost types
It's a great mon
I think Ghost was physical in the first few gens due to Lick being the only damaging move for Ghost in Gen 1. If you think about it, it wouldn't make sense for Lick to be a special move at all in Gen 1 logic and then that trend persisted until the split
Forgot to mention the almighty Giratina
The fact that they really introduced one ghost type in gen 2 is such a huge insult. They could have made Marowak a ghost type to go with its lore and they just didnt.
Ghost types would be balanced if they still had pursuit in the game. It astounds me that they took the move out it’s just bad game design. Don’t limit counter play and options, it just turns a meta game stale and people won’t play it anymore
No mention of giratina the literal 2nd strongest deity under arceus and a ghost type.
Yes JPR, I had a great morning, thanks for not asking
Just memeing but happy new year!
Allister is the best. 🤩
Very surprised giratina wasn't brought up
Hi JPR !
Love ur pokemon type history videos..
Mind making one on water types pls ?
I guess we can say they've risen from their graves & wreaking havoc on others more
My main complaint with ghost type is how in the main game, it seems that everyone and their mother has the move bite
Ghost being Physical was so weird to me. Why make a type so centered around the ethereal and supernatural physical. What about the Gengar line and Misdrevaus screamed "yeah these guys throw hands". Gastly and Misdrevaus don't even have hands
and yet somehow Gastly can learn the elemental punches for...some reason
I still don't know why astonish - a move startles opponents with a shout - is a PHYSICAL attack.
Ghosts are going on a rampage in gen 9 and Basculegion is coming when we get Pokemon Home
The move lick was actually worse in gen 1, it was buffed to 30 power in gen 4 according to bulbapedia
I've always believed in the power of Ghosts. Normal can't touch them. Think about that.👻👻
0:08 They do have 2 immunities
Ghost is inmune to rapid spin in a generation based on hazard abuse also literally the best two Pokémon in the tier (based on usage) are Ghost types. Gen 9 in similar to gen 2 in the hazards aproach but gen 9 have way more and better Ghost types
i specifically sesrched youtube to explain why ghost types are as good as people say they are precisely because as a casual player who only knows a bit of comp, their rise to the top was kinda sudden for me. i always perceieved ghost types as just 'there'. theyre not as good but not bad either. just in the middle
Pursuit being brought back would be a great way to indirectly nerf Ghost.
Misdreavus isn't just good in Gen 2 because it walls gengar. Mainly it's ability to perish trap and spread annoying status. Snorlax could hit it with Shadow Ball if it really wanted to
Ghosts were also dominant in the lower tiers of Gen 3, mainly misdreavus and banette in uu Sableye and Haunter in NU
Good thing Gen 9 is only about 2 minutes, so I don't miss out on too much of the overall length of the video. ^.^
Ghost has always been a really good typing, they were just really conservative for a couple of generations after Gengar with new ones.
Been saying for years that ghost needs another type that resists it. Bug IMO
I *always* try to include a Ghost type on my team when feasable... though I'm starting to think this might not be the best idea depending on the region and/or the Pokemon of choice. :/
