ANdrew - get a box of nitrile surgical gloves. They keep your hands dry and are sensitive enough to tie on flies. Also, carry a towel in your wader pocket (and extra surgical gloves). After you release a fish, dry your hands. And get some of those disposable hand warmers.
Wader towels are game changers. Just fished steelhead in 28° weather today and MAN would I have been in trouble with out. Great shout on the nitrile gloves as well
You’ve inspired me… to stay at home when it’s only 8 degrees outside. I picked up Euronymphing a couple of years ago and I love to streamer fish too. I live near the Rocky Mountains and I’m looking forward to getting back out there this spring. Well done!
I so enjoy your videos. Especially the Fishmas attempt at glory! Your waters are so different and yet have similarities to mine. Merry Christmas young feller and keep fishing every day you can. Rods can be replaced. The days have no guarantee.
I love your videos I'm a fly fishing addict from wales... my dream before I pass is too fish in America you have beautiful rivers packed with unbelievable fish. Gutted for you breaking 3 rods in that space of time is devastating hope you get a new rod soon
Awesome video Andrew. Sorry about your gear. Beautiful Browns, beautiful landscape, beautiful water, and a monster rainbow that was amazingly terrific. Keep up the good work and always tight lines. ❤😊
Amazing self control and respect your pereserverance despite 3 broken rods in two outings. But,gotta say , those trout are some of the prettiest I’ve seen in awhile. Especially that behemoth of a bow! That old boy was a true tank! I’m wondering like someone mentioned earlier if those frigid temps. had something to do with at least the first two broken rods. And the third one did hit that big boulder but if it wasn’t so brittle maybe it might’ve only scratched it up. Amazing how you were able to catch not one more but almost had another tank if that rod didn’t break the cast before. But again, I’m very impressed that you even were out flyfishing in such brutal cold. You paid the price but was rewarded with gorgeous fish. You and your brother put out the best vids! Keep it going and Merry Christmas and we’ll see you guys next year! Happy New Year! Tightlines then.
Bear in mind. Many folks in here probably don’t know how many times you smacked the rod tip with your poor casting skills. It weakens the graphite. 🤷🏻♂️
Always wanted to be one of the first to comment, but now I feel swamped with bots 😁 Anyway, magnificent views, as always, and fantastic fish! Greetings from Poland and Merry Christmas! It's now just one month left until trout season opens here 😌
@Callmemartyx Yes, there is one stream in SE Poland where it's possible to go after trout from January 1st, but in all the other swims it's February 1st. So it is a little later, but still a big difference to your place 😮
Yeah the bots are ridiculous anymore! Thanks for watching though and Merry Christmas! Hopefully when your season opens up you can get on some awesome fish.
Did you have ice build-up on the tip-top guide that caused the tip to break when pulling the icy line through? I often fish in bitterly cold conditions and have never broken a rod solely due to the cold. Breaking all but one of your rods must have been brutal! Do you think they’ll warranty the work? Great fish, by the way-definitely worth freezing for!
I salute you! Your 3 rods died in action with one still in the fight. Temps 0-10. The rainbow was a monster. I broke a rod once with it laying on the ground and getting stepped on by a bull named Firecracker. Merry Christmas!
Another great video. By 0 degrees, you presumably mean fahrenheit? Unbelievably cold for those of us across the Pond. That first brown was fantastic, but your PB rainbow something else. Have a great Christmas, both of you, and look forward to more great vids in 2025.
Depends what you want to do. If you want an all round rod just get a 9ft 4/5 or 5/6 weight. The Maxcatch chinese rods on ebay or amazon are really cheap and it doesnt break your bank for a first time rod
If your going to order a maxcatch u might want to getter ordered Now ..The Trump administration announced that Amazon and eBay will be adding a possible 40 to 60% import tax on china sellers !! That will be paid by u the buyer on checkout ! so right now if i order 800 buck in rod building products my tax is 0000 There talking about removing the limit ..
@@faruk2032 Good advice. Never spend a lot of money on your first outfit. It's a real pleasure fishing with a really good rod and reel but you'll benefit a lot more from experience than you will from some high-priced gear. The good equipment can come after you've learned what your own preferences are.
I have a pair of wool mitts you can fold back then your fingers are in glove like ends yet your fingers are exposed , I use them for hunting as well , they are some of the best gloves I have for both worlds , just and idea Andrew 👍

I personally fish a retirement rod or cheaper rod in the winter. I live in Utah and fish a lot during the winter. Think of it as rock skis or lesser sadness
Thats hilarious, I went out today to a small wild stream near me as well just to scout it out, it was extremely cold ice on my rod tip every cast, i broke my brand new fly fishing rod before i could even get a cast, hooked my finger open and then lost all my small spinners to branches lol but while i was trying to cast where it wasnt frozen i found what were 10inch browns or brookies swimming away so definitely a win in my books, next time i just gotta be more prepared and careful.
My fishing buddy broke 7 rods in about 3 weeks. He was so frustrated that he gave up fishing for a few weeks. In the years since I don't think he's broken any. Poor guy.
I don't know enough about trout biology to be sure. But I'm a little concerned about handling these fish at all in air that's probably 20-30 degrees colder than the water they're living in. To my mind, that's probably worse than using barbed hooks. Classical ice fishing is not typically catch and release. This seems an approximation of that. Do they survive the thermal shock without injury?
Honestly never heard anything negative about freezing temperatures. Only bad thing I’ve heard is about it being so cold that the water flash freezes on the gills. Which I think happens at around -10 degrees F or even colder. So I’m not sure, if I’m wrong I’d love for someone to correct me. But I’d want to see actual scientific data.
Definitely get yourself some surgical gloves. Can't understand why you've broken so many rods, it seems to be a regular occurrence. I've never broken any in well over 70 years of fishing. Hopefully you'll be able to mend them, maybe it was the very cold weather that made them break, as you're an American I assume that you're using Fahrenheit when you quote temperatures
You’re worried about your cold hands, meanwhile you hold this trout up for the camera which exposes their delicate gills and eye membranes to that extreme cold air which can flash freeze these delicate body parts. This is not my opinion but rather a well known fact that many fish biologists try to convey to fishermen every winter on several social media channels. If you must fish in these cold temperatures keep netted fish in the water. It’s a must.
Dang. That shot at 1:55 looks so epic 🙌🏻

Amazing! I froze just watching it..
Beautiful Brown, Andrew, especially against that snowy background 👌Happy Christmas boys! Keep up your good work in 2025!

What brand rods
No doubt what you wish will be under the Christmas tree this year - multiple sets of spare rod-tips….🤣

Yep, it’s Fahrenheit! And thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it
That particular canyon gets COLD AF in the winter.
GM canyon in CO right? I almost lost my life on the trek down one winter 🤣
It was cold, beautiful fish as always, greetings from Poland, good luck in 2025
Greetings from the US! Thanks for watching the video
Absolute beauty! What size tippet are you using? Trout like that don’t exist where I fish
yea rod tips break for me as well never broke a catfish rod though its always been the lighter rods
Just wondering, where do you guys do most of your fishing, when you are not traveling?
Hey, do you have a recommendation for a fly rod and real for a beginning?

Hey John I think Andrew is trying to tell you what he needs for Christmas 😂
HAHAHAH🤣
Good night ✅🎣🐟🌈😁👍
I just got a fly ride for Christmas and I’ve watched every video of magical on the Internet. Do you have any tips?
Guess you’ll be needing a few new rods for Christmas after that trip lol
Gosh dang where is this at ?
Andrew, I hope you get a new rod for Christmas.
Welcome to cold temp fly fishing. Check your line as well as the really cold temps can crack you line as well as you rod.
That's a hard learned lesson that's for sure! Thanks for watching
I'm a chemist, and my guess is that, as with steel, at very low temps graphite becomes more brittle and less flexible.....more glass-like.
Nope, bad guess. The answer is this guy just mistreats and breaks rods often on this channel.
Did they teach you that in chemistry scool?
@@tenkarapondfishing4611 no, he's just irresponsible with his equipment
@kevinr4700 Yes. I have a PhD in organic chemistry. Why? You have something against education? Give it a try. You might even learn to spell correctly.
@@tenkarapondfishing4611 thank God Trump won...am I right 🫣
Did you happen to check water temp? I don't have much luck with streamers in cold water.
I'm curious , we're you using
Loon Ice Off?
Caught my first ever rainbow In Gatlinburg Tennessee like a day ago with powder bait the fish was like 2 and half pounds
Heck yeah congrats!

Yes,.. I have broken a few of my fly rods too...and its agony of waiting for the replacement tip section ..lol😂 that's why I don't spend $1000 on any rod.... well, maybe on a competition spey rod...🤔
Yeahhh the only good thing about the expensive rods are the warranty.. but sometimes the replacement tips are as much as the cheap rods
What MFG were the broken rod from ??
Nitrile gloves under fingerless "woolies", a Northern Nevada staple.
What weight rods are you using?
Andrew, what was the water temp?
Wow 3? Oh MY!!! You buy some Cabela’s/whatever sportsman in your area. That’s crazy
I think Andrew needs some cheap rods as back ups!! Thanks for watching
3 rods in one trip!!! And I've never seen a Trout attempt revenge on the net!😂
Yeah idk why the trout was eating the net 🤣
@hardmanfishing Payback !
I personally fish a retirement rod or cheaper rod in the winter. I live in Utah and fish a lot during the winter. Think of it as rock skis or lesser sadness
That's honestly a really good idea! Get some cheap combo and fish with it instead, or at least have it as a backup
Hopefully you have warranties on those rods.
Were both rods T&T that you broke?
the most unlucky fisherman ive seen fly fishing lmao... hope Ur holidays going to be a lot better for ya n merry Christmas buddy
i mean like the poles but nice fish my guy
I also do fly fishing and I also have a subaru 👍
I feel like that's a pretty common occurrence LOL
What state are u fishing in?
The cold had a lot to do with the broken rods. You are pretty tough

Wow
Damn that sucks about all the rods you think the cold played a part ?
Almost certainly
Well at least people will know what to get you for Christmas!
HAHA! That’s so funny 😂
This is why I fish with fiberglass
Love your fishing shows ..What we need to do is build u a fly rod from a 9 Ft spinning blank ..That way your not killing tips ?
Might not be a bad idea 😂

Day 7 (one week) of responding everyday!
hope you have replacement warranty
If you throw the rod on the ground instead of putting it down very easily the rod can break🤷🏻♂️ I believe.
Then don't do that
love that river below the reservoir but its sketchy getting down there during wintertime.
Give me a Rapala or some Gulp minnows like you guys used to fish .
I mean we could fish that way but that's not nearly as exciting for us. And if it's not exciting for us then the videos would be boring.

Now that's insane!!! I'd have taken a break too at that point
Where is this?
Farmington river in ct

your high sticking your tip a fly rod is way to flexible to handle that u will break them Every time ..

Actually the only refuge is WARRANTY😂
