NUFC Formed in 1881 NOT 1892: Club Historian Reveals The TRUTH!

  • The story of Newcastle United’s history is like most others, a complex one.
This video has been put together after reading the historical research of Paul Joannou, the clubs official historian and speaking to him on the phone about the subject. He originally broke this story to David Morton of the Evening Chronicle in June 2021. It is also inspired by an article by Paul Brown. From there I have conducted my own historical research and put together this video.
We need to protect our history from being rewritten and then swept away by popular culture.
Paul Joannou was raised in Denton Burn, Newcastle and now lives in Edinburgh. He is currently writing a book on the history of the Newcastle West End football club, which is due for release in November 23’.
He has agreed to appear in my video to help explain the history of this club. Don’t forget to subscribe, so you don’t miss out on this exciting video!

It's no surprise the old board of directors didn't want to celebrate the real centenary of the club. They were probably unaware of the date of the club's formation and only concerned about holding on to power regardless of the mutual apathy between the club and supporters at the time.

Excellent content as ever Eddie think its important the club recognises the lost 11 years, and something ive been saying for years as ive read a lot of Paul's work. Seems strange why the club has continued with the 1892 narrative especially as Paul is the official historian. Lets hope this is rectified soon and the club has events. From Pioneers of the North; Newcastle's famous black and white striped shirts were originally the team's change strip. According to Darrin Foss, the team was scheduled to travel to Nottingham to play Forest in January 1892 and there was a dispute over which team should change (both wore red shirts at the time). An appeal to the Secretary of the FA, CW Alcock resulted in an instruction that, as the senior club, Forest should play in their usual red so United borrowed a set of broad striped shirts from Notts County. United's reserves also wore black and white stripes (in a more conventional pattern) and these seem to have been used as a change strip until 1894

I think the others need to move theirs back…
It’s almost like saying I dated my wife for 5 years then we married and she took my name but I’m now going to say her name was mine for 5 years prior to the marriage..
It makes sense that it should be when the name became known.
It’s the others that are doing it wrong, probably just to beat their chest about being around longer than a rival etc.
Great info, good history and one which I have heard before, but never the less, we came about in our current guise in 1892
I wonder when MKDons have their founding year, despite being around for decades before their restructure 🤔
    So much more to this…

    • @TynesideLife
      @TynesideLife  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Completely disagree bud and the example you give isn’t comparable. The correct similarity would be to say your relationship ‘formed’ when you met your partner. Your relationship didn’t form when she took your name. The marriage year is very important, but it’s not when your relationship formed. If you’re asked when did you get together with your partner, you don’t tell them your marriage year…
Not a great analogy, but it’s the one you used and is as close as you’ll get.
A club ‘formation’ is far more significant than a ‘name change’ and that’s the difference. A formation is a ‘beginning’, the creation of something new. A name change is important, but it’s not the beginning of the story, it’s just part of the journey. In fact if you go down that route, the name didn’t become officially registered until 1895 🤷🏻‍♂️
Our club ‘formed’ in 1881. Our club changed grounds, changed names and then eventually the name changed to Newcastle United.
We need to be proud of our whole history and our beginnings like other clubs.
Thanks for complimenting the channel 👊🏻

Couple of things Kev. Other clubs have registered their clubs formations from the beginning, under other names. Secondly, it’s erasing 11 years of club history from memory.
