    I plant a sweet potato in a hanging basket and grow the shoots all winter so in the spring I just snip the runners and plant them. You can root them in water first but if it's the rainy season just plant them straight into the ground. You'll have more sweet potatoes than you can use or give away💜 happy growing 💜

      Hi, what country are you in ? Here in the UK, unfortunately they would only over winter in a heated building ... we are thinking of trying this in our newly insulated shed which has a log burner ... I like the idea of using hanging baskets for this, that could work well for us... THanks for sharing the idea and for watching 💚✌️🌿

      @@freedomforestlife Hi. I'm in USA. I grow them hanging on my living room wall during the winter. The vines and leaves don't need as much sunlight just kept warm. As long as it's above 60°F they will take off. I hope you try it this winter. God bless

    If you plant the harvested vine indoors, you can then root 2-3 leaf segments in the spring. Here in Ecuador, these plants don't seem to die back if you water them and we plant the vine right in the ground.

    I finally worked out that west Yorkshire is zone 8 on average, but some years it’s 7 as we can get temp at -10c +.
    Have you tried growing them in 30ltr potato pots ?
    Will be giving this a try this year thanks to this inspiring video

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Great that youve found your zone - whilst there are always variables year to year, it can be helpful when planning what to grow to have a better idea on what 'should' actually survive in your area. I think you'll find a later vid where we grew some it pots - not sure what size ... it may be the way we are going though moving forward ....

    I’m gonna start my slips this morning from organic SPs bought from Sainsburys 🤞🏻

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Vanessa, the net is to stop birds scratching out the slips when first planted out - Good luck with your slips - Sweet potatoes bought from Asian food stores seem to so ok for growing slips from, from what we've heard/tried too ... so maybe try a few of those too if you can, just in case the sainsbury's ones don't go ... Happy growing 💚✌️🌿

    Congrats on your harvest. Mine was far from great but very determined to try again this year. Thanks for the tips. What was the netting for - squirrels? South East based too. Excited for this year. Just subscribed.

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nneka, thanks so much for your comments! Ah im sure you will have better luck this year, they dont like very fertile coniditions as that makes thm produce more foliage, we use a low fertility compost as a mulch for them..the netting was for blackbirds, as here they tend to pull the slips out the soil when we first plant them, but after a couple of weeks when they have rooted well its not a problem, because we plant into our compost mulch it makes them quite easy to pull out initially! Thnk you for subscribing and keep in touch with how yours go!!!

    Is Yakon a perennial and is it legal to grow in the UK?

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      HI Chris - You've been working hard 🙌 We grow Yacon as a replant Perennial, Yacon playlist here for more info 👉 th-cam.com/play/PLOidPRQofoMO7DbnFE7dT9EQBNsKncF72.html
      DEFA 'ADVICE' re Yacon ... not updated for 2 year now "Currently yacon can be legally moved within GB, but while there remains a significant degree of uncertainty over the general disease status of this crop, we recommend that it should not be grown in the future".
      Then if you look into PYV again its impact doesn;t seem to be causing much concern for worry either .. "However, there is no specific information of its effects on yield. On experimental hosts, the symptoms it causes are often less severe than those caused by AMV" I'm personal more worried about the chemicals most commercial crops are treated with and releasing into the environment and the damage that is causing long term, as always though it seems like the focus of governing bodies is always in the wrong place! We've been growing Yacon alongside potatoes for about 5 years now, haven't noticed anything unusual. 💚✌️🌿

      Hi Roger, thats some nice ideas for the stalks and leaves - thank you. Re slugs etc ... ours really don't seem to get bothered much which is interesting... we do have a very diverse and strong bird population here, prob where we are surround by woodland, our jungle and the food forest, which can create challenges with certain crops, but maybe benefit others!? 💚✌️🌿
