We was raised on food like this when I was growing up. This is a good country meal! Some whole kernel corn and onion goes good to cooked with it! Have a Blessed Day Friends. Justin
Our Mom made this for us as well. This video brought back good memories. Sometimes we had pinto or lima beans too. We are in southern IL and love southern and home cooking.❤
So funny reading your viewers comments, sounds like most of us grew up eating this delicious meal! I’ve never had them cooked all together, usually fried potatoes +onions, and the weinee’s and sauerkraut, yummy!🫶🙏
Good morning Calvin and Marie,I've had this before it is delicious, I love those pictures of you two ..what a beautiful couple , sending prayers and sunshine 🌞 your way ❤
Calvin We had kabasa and fried potatoes and carrots tonight. We were out of hot dogs or I would have used them. Yummy. Meals from childhood are the best. Good memories.love your channel.
Happy you're feeling better, Calvin. The story you told of your son praying was very touching and that fervent prayer most definitely reached the throne room of heaven. 🙏🙌 ❤ I pray God's continued protection over you and Marie. On a side note...your sauerkraut, potato, and hotdog meal looked very tasty. I will be trying that recipe out.
Hello Kevin and Marie, That looks great, i will give it a try. Thanks for sharing, i need all of the frugal recipes that i can get because it's just two of us too. Ya'll be blessed and have a wonderful week.Love from Lula mae and Family. 💕💟💕
Our mama cooked this meal , no sauerkraut, she called it Tatties & weenies with onions and hot water cornbread. Best meal weekly . Mama had our dinner ready at 4 pm after we got off the school bus 🚌 💛 looks delicious 😋
Cool! Looks yummy! I already have home canned potatoes, home canned kraut & some hot dogs in the freezer..I know what`s for supper tomorrow night! Thanks for sharing! Blessings!
I absolutely love this meal you done a great job your good at cooking Marie is too❤ Shelby I've eat that a lot but not with the potatoes but I no I would love it the way you fixed it Calvin
Hi Marie and Calvin! My mom made this many times when I was growing up and I always loved it! The other variation that she would do is simmer cut weenies like you did with chopped onions until they started turning brown and then add a can of pork & beans and simmer until hot. We called both of them "hobo meal" but I never knew which version was going to hit the plate until I started smelling it cooking! She also made sloppy joes from scratch...before Manwich cause in a can was a thing. That was our three possible "hobo meals"....all delicious! Thanks for sharing this video....well done!
I grew up in the 70s and 80s with a single Dad. He made a sausage, potato meal like that. Not with the sauerkraut. We kids wouldn't have eaten that. :) Love the video. Hope you are feeling better. And my dad had a blue car like your red or maroon one. Don't know the name of it. I love the old photos! So precious.
I enjoy the frugal recipes and also the shopping haul videos. Supper looks delicious. We ate a lot of fried potatoes and sauerkraut growing up as well.
When we lived in North Dakota we went to a dinner for the town and it was mashed potatoes sauerkraut and wieners oh and bread and butter and milk❤ that made me think of that hope you guys are doing great and God's blessing to both of you❤❤
Yum! That's one of my favorites although I often use kielbasa instead of hot dogs and eat it with a dollop of horseradish. Thanks for cooking for us :) - Laura
Can't go wrong with these ingredients. My Mom also made beanie weanies with leftover beans sometimes too. It fed us 6 kids and Momma and Daddy. We had beans and cornbread alot too. Looks good Calvin.
I can’t tell you how many times my mama made this for us! She made this and bennie weenies, aka pork and beans and cut up wieners. She always served it with cornbread. Did that ever bring back memories! I’m glad you and Marie are having a good day today. I love the end of this video! So sweet! God bless you both.
Hi Calvin and Marie I also grew up eating this. My mom added smoked paprika so it was a little orange looking. My mom was a German lady from Romania. I guess good food is the same no matter where you go. Thank you for the kind words yesterday about her passing. Anna from Arkansas.
This looked yummy. We didn't have this growing up but my Daddy would make sausage and saurkraut all the time. He loved butterbeans too and would often serve those with it. Ill have to try this version
Good afternoon Calvin and Marie. I have had this , but not with kraut. We added onions to the mix.A slice of really good bread would be good too. I like ketchup on the side to dip in. Thanks for this one . Nice & easy& economical too. Take care . Sending 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏.
Hello Calvin and Marie. We both had this many years ago as kids, and I have made this many times for us. I fry my potatoes separate, and cook my kraut and sliced hot dogs together, I don't mix them. I think I'll try them your way. I'm 74 and still like to try new ways to do things. Take care! Mrs. Lonnie
I still make this. It’s a little more expensive as I have to buy the hot dogs with no nitrates/nitrites. Sometimes I’ll also add a scrambled eggs and sliced bell peppers 😋
I just love ❤️ the way you cook on a budget I wasn’t here when my parents went through Depression but I learned of love ❤️ and love ❤️ in the kitchen and love ❤️ around the table but I’ve got a feeling with prices keep going up that many in this generation may learn the true meaning of being thankful for what you can afford but do it from the heart ❤️
I have never had this with sauerkraut, but I will try it. I have a similar recipe you may want to try. It isn't as budget friendly as yours, but not that much more money. I bet it would be good with some really good sliced link sausage. Here is the recipe. I'd be honored to see you make it in one of your videos! Pennies and Potatoes 4 cups potatoes, cubed and boiled 1 onion, diced 10 hotdogs, cut into bite-size pieces 3 tbsp. butter 3 tbsp. flour 1½ cups milk 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese bread crumbs Melt butter, blend in flour. Slowly add milk. Stir till thickened; add cheese, stir till melted and blended. Mix potatoes, onions and hotdogs in lightly greased casserole and pour cheese mixture over all. Top with bread crumbs. Bake 30 minutes at 425 degrees.
Looks like you are trying to economize and get us doing the same. People usually get themselves into debt around this time of year so it's wise to take stock of what you're doing by scrimping on things like meals. Thanks for helping us out and reminding us. This meal sounds not only economical but also filling since it's good meat and potatoes.
I can’t say I’ve ever had or heard of this dish, however, I’ve had my share of fried potatoes in my life!! Mama loved kraut and weenies so we had it pretty often. Calvin, the way you said winnies tickled me. I’m not making fun but it reminded me of Mama. See her name was Edwina and some of her cousins called her Winnie. It is definitely not a common name but was apparently the name of an author whose book Grandma was reading near the end of her pregnancy. I’m sorry I bring my Mama up so often. I can’t seem to get past losing her n June 2015. I’m alone and sick and many things on here remind me of her. One thing she used to fix after Daddy retired was Salmon Pattie’s and and always opened a can of pork n beans. Daddy would get a slice of light bread with his. It was just the 2 of them and they always had these together. In our family of 5 none of us were breakfast eaters but we all loved breakfast food. Once in awhile we would have pancakes for supper, bacon, eggs and toast or biscuits, or just biscuits and gravy. Another thing I rem Mama making us kids was Pigs in a Blanket as we called it then. She had a slice of light bread, a slice of cheese and a wiener. Then she pulled two opposite corners of the bread together and held them together with a toothpick I believe. Then she put them in the oven til they were done. Can’t say how she knew when they were done but she was Mama and she just knew I guess. Even while I was caring for her in her last years once in awhile we just had sweet milk and cornbread for supper. We had food but this was what we liked I guess we were Country when country wasn’t Cool! 😂 Marie, born and raised in the hills of Tennessee, just a few miles from AllanDale Mansion that we spoke about before, but I never had or saw this wonderful dish Calvin made tonight. Have either of y’all ever had any kind of hash? I haven’t but I have a friend who keeps telling me it is wonderful. I promise I’m going to zip it up now. Love n prayers to you both as well as Kim and her sweet family. I just love her. 💜🙏🏻🎄🎄 🌭
Thanks very much Vikki. We love hearing about your mother. We eat all of the food that you mentioned. The only hash we have had is corned beef hash. Have a Blessed week, Calvin and Marie

Cal, maybe serving this dish with spicy brown mustard would enhance it.
Sounds great, I don't think we have ever tried it with mustard.
That is a lot healthier than a McDonalds meal!
Lol, yes
