  • In 1987 combat cameraman Glenn Sierra documented the last major NATO joint exercise in Europe. Shipping men and equipment around the world was expensive and so was the collateral damage of war-gaming in civilian areas. At the time the people of Western Europe understood the Russian Soviet threat as real and accepted the NATO training.

I did REFORGER ‘86 . That was January-February Of 1986 . So much Fun ! I actually got laid out in the field . As soon as we were in recovery in Hohenfels , I go on a 3 day R&R to Berchtesgaden . Was so cool . I hooked up with a cute little Navy Lieutenant Doctor On Leave in Bavaria. I had so much fun I reenlisted. Like many other times we went to the field, I participated in Certain Strike . We just rode around in the back of our Bradley Vehicles for 2 weeks and slept . Yes, slept .

Pictures in Readers digest of an M60 tank from Reforger 1985 inspired me to join the Army, but I never went to Germany.

I participated in REFORGER from 1987-1990. Was assigned to 3rd COSCOM, 16th SUPPORT GROUP, 8th MAINT> BN, 53rd HMSC. We assisted in the unloading of equipment and storage until equipment was picked up by assigned unit.

I was in 2nd Squadron 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Bamberg Germany in 1985. That was the year the Squadron did NETT to the M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank. As part of this REFORGER exercise we were a maneuver element training with Blue Forces and then to Grafenwöehr for Live Fire training and platoon battle runs. The M1 Tank changed tank gunnery forever as target detection and engagement speed were greatly improved among the crew duties inside the tank turret. And once your loader got used to the new systems in his station target engagement speed improved even more. OH HAIL OH HAIL OH CAVALRY, THE KINGS OF BATTLE COME FIGHT WITH ME..I USED TO DRIVE A CHEVROLET, NOW IT’S MOUNTED EVERY DAY. UP IN THE MORNING GET OUT OF THE RACK, 3RD PLATOON IS ON THE ATTACK…

The HEMTT is one of my favorite vehicle platforms. It may have terrible gas milage but it can haul almost anything and go anywhere

Wow.. now I feel old. Loved seeing 2-66 cross the bridge in what look like M1 IP's? We joined them at Garlstedt in '88 (3-66AR from Ft. Hood) and pulled brand new M1A1's after retiring our M1 slicks at Hood. Good times, great memories!

Awesome! Thanks so much. And today history repeats itself a bit. While a shadow of Cold War levels, the US is building up conventional forces in Europe again.

This is what drove the economy for decades. Families had kids that served or families that worked national defense industries and war has always made our economy function. I didn't know what to think after the wall came down.

it was only in the 80s that NATO had regained conventional parity, and didnt need to depend on nuclear weapons for defense.
