The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is the premier late night talk show on CBS, airing at 11:35pm EST, streaming online via CBS All Access, and delivered to the International Space Station on a USB drive taped to a weather balloon. Naw, the character is boring, not conflicted enough.
But that's hardly the actors fault.
Very true. Without him driving it all, the rest isn't possible and falls off the rails as repetitive conflict with no grounding force or character at the center to offset the rest and focus the journey.
Quite often, the writers or editors for all we know, haven't done him many favors and there's only so much he can do or control. That being said, he's elevated some very memorable scenes to iconic levels that were so quiet and simple. Those are reminders of the home runs that are possible when he's given the opportunity. He's also proven to be a force to be reckoned with behind the camera.

When watching Gotham I was literally thinking man this guy is playing Gordon with the voice of Batman lol. Didn’t know he voiced him before.
Can we all just agree that Gotham isn't the superhero show we want, but the one we deserve? It encompasses everything a comic-based show should be. Only Gotham can pull off the things they pull off.
Had to really force myself through the first seasons, but seriously this season has so far been fantastic, I've loved it where I've felt the CW shows have in general dipped in quality this year (probably because the writers moved over to Black Lightning, this dip in quality happened on every new show they added in the past also).
It's certainly a flawed show. I remember only originally sticking with it in season 1 because
1) I like the Batman universe
2) I thought the Penguin was being really well done
I really liked the idea of the gang warfare and internal politics in that first season or so that seems to have somewhat faded now.
But it was a chore to slug through. The show is filled with great moments, moments that are top claibre, and then other episodes are so boring, useless and forgetable I'd rather just never have watched them. It has gotten better as the seasons go on (with the exception of 3). I'd reccomend it, but only for those prepared to fight their way there.
narmaK Not really. This show is like every comic book adaption (movies, TV shows) that takes multiple comic book elements in order to make a new story. It's not disrespecting the mythos, as opposed to doing an elseworld.
Funny thing is that even with the slog it took to get into Gotham, if I were to recommend any of the non-Netflix shows to anyone new to it I'd probably recommend Gotham over the Arrowverse stuff, simply because at this point I can't even imagine getting into that fresh. Arrowverse is pretty much the perfect comicbook adaptation, both positive things (action, drama, high stakes) and negative things (hyperboles, often bad writing, a lot of times you have to just ignore your sense of disbelief in order to enjoy it properly), but the main reason I wouldn't recommend it to a new viewer is the reason I love the Arrowverse the most, the crossovers and events and interconnectivity, which works great when you are following them all weekly but horrible otherwise. Imagine picking up Arrow, Flash and Legends of Tomorrow on Blue-Ray and watching them in the proper order, you'd basically have to sit there with a spreadsheet... a lot like you sometimes do when you want to read a DC or Marvel crossover comics event with connected issues in series you don't read, it's fine when you are reading the weeklies and following the event but otherwise you kinda have to wait for the collection to avoid missing stuff. This way Arrowverse has managed to copy a lot of both the best and worst of comics, and is the most true to form that we're ever likely going to get.
Just watch this last season, it's the one we want and we deserve
1 of his kids is actually a stepkid but it's very sweet he immediately included him.

Gotham's an odd show because it flickers between super brilliant episodes and super dumb episodes.
And those episodes also flicker between realistic characters and stupid caricature.
Jim Gordon definitely is one of the best parts of the show though, along with Harvey Bullock and their friendship through out the seasons.
ITA. The show is at its best when it stays on course with Ben's Jim Gordon as the eyes and ears at the center and showcasing the dynamic and bond with Donal Logue and his Bullock. They have a great rapport and Ben can work a scene even with minimal dialogue, not to mention he's already proven to be a very good director and writer.
I still like Gotham despite the show jumping the shark constantly. Ben adds weight to it.

Freakin' hilarious! The mutual, light-hearted tension between two methods of BBQ sitting right next to each other. As soon as Stephen says '...your state also has something they call barbeque', they were instantly on the same page. Coming from here in California, I'm just glad to see someone out there cares about proper meat, even if they disagree about what it is.

Mmm... delicious, tasty murder. Well, better a kind hand with a metal slug, than an indifferent claw with a taste for live sashimi. The key is an appreciation for the meat which extends to the care of the animal. Go to Arcata, Ca and you'll see some fairly happy cows (which taste great). One time, a young one was following my friend's Husky along the other side of the fence, sticking his butt up in the air the way a dog does when it plays. We named him Joey, and they played for like half a mile.

Oh man i was 15 when the first season of The O.C aired. Aaaah the nostalgia hits me when i see Ben Mckenzie. Its been over 10 years since the last episode aired.
When I first started watching gotham I thought it was going to be absolute SHIT but they delivered and continue to deliver.
It’s one of the only live action TV shows that DC has really run well with. CW has ruined the Flash, Supergirl, and Green Arrow, Gotham is a breath of fresh air. Though it’s different and not canon, it’s well done and just keeps getting better.

While I did feel that Ben was steered into dumbing it down given how articulate, intelligent and educated he is, at least the small talk showcased a dry sense of humor. I'm guessing that they had to avoid anything divisive or controversial. I'm not the least bit interested in anything Batman related, but I'm invested in anything Ben's involved in, and I've enjoyed the chemistry with Donal Logue and the Jim and Harvey dynamic. That show alone would rate. He makes every character very compelling and he's carving out an excellent career as a director and writer too. As the lead, I give him kudos for fostering a great environment for cast and crew that even Gotham's guests have noted. It's always a pleasure to watch him and wonderful that he seems to be enjoying his growing family so much.

Fun Fact: Ben has also voiced Batman in Batman Year one.

Even in gotham Gordon hasn't really succumbed to corruption. He didn't kill Cobblepot, he never gave up with Falcone, Maroni, Fish and Penguin and now only getting where we left off was when ur like damn he got played by Sofia Falcone

I actually wanted them to make Gordon the proto Batman last year when he was doing the PI / bounty hunter thing, and take Bruce under his wing as the proto Robin. It would make sense that Bruce is okay with training and sending out young sidekicks in that role, if he initally began in that role himself.

I remember a few years ago I watched a Batman cartoon and the moment I heard Batman spoke I knew it was Ryan Atwood, it was like an origin story, I was happy, lol.
Gotham is a great show, but sometimes they overuse/reuse side characters (villains specifically) way too much
