Votes for women: How the suffragists won

  • One hundred years ago the 19th Amendment, which would protect women's right to vote, was just one vote short of ratification. "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan reports on how the landmark legislation finally earned passage, and talks with historians Elaine Weiss, Susan Ware and Martha S. Jones about how suffragists such as Carrie Chapman Catt won the long-pitched battle which, for black women, continued long after the amendment became embedded in our Constitution. Brennan also talks with singer Rosanne Cash who celebrated the suffragists' legacy.

    The only thing that could match this would be the passage of the Equal Right Amendment.
    It's been 100 years... time for women to become full citizens. Pass the ERA.

      You should read the case that women made against the ERA. It would destroy the possibility of women only sporting leagues, women only spaces, special protections and opportunities for women. It sets the legal standard, in our most foundational legal document, that at all time, in all places, and in all ways, women have to be treated exactly like men--by law. The reality is that women have special vulnerabilities and should have special protections. It's in all our interest for there to be shelters for battered women, rape crisis centers for women, laws that allow a single mother to be financially sustained while raising her child. The ERA follows a logic that goes too far with the idea that because we are equal we must be treated the same. It doesn't adequately consider the multitude of ways we are different.

    That's the problem we take that for granted the 19th Amendment the 19th amendment gives a woman's right to vote but it also gives every citizen the right to vote to.. that's what makes America great. Because bottom line we still run by democracy. That's why I believe that we should Define Electoral College. Because the bottom line is Hillary Clinton did have the majority of the votes and realistically she should have won bought I'm not saying that I'm for her or against her I'm just saying that is that that does take the majority out of the picture. What is your opinion on that I think that they should Define the Electoral College. And put it back into majority rules

    • @justadummy8076
      @justadummy8076 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We do not live in a democracy, and we most definitely should not live in a democracy. Democracy has never actually worked, because Democracy is Public Rule, meaning Majority Rule, which leads to tyranny on the behalf of the majority and oppresses the few.
      The reason America is a Republic is because the Founding Fathers were educated people and realised that Democracies have failed over and over, which is why Americans have a Constitution, so they are not ruled by a group of people aka Oligarchs, but so that we may all be judged equally under the Law.
      Even Socrates despised the Democracy in favour of a Republic.

      It creates a separation of trusting men who have always led since the beginning of time. Basically creating internal conflict. Women shouldn't be in a position of power without earning it. Just like a man has to. It's not about women being inferior, it's about being qualified for the responsibility the position bares.
