  • Hayao Miyazaki is a legend in the world of animation. Director, manga artist, producer, and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki is one of the most beloved and well-known Japanese artists of all time - and for good reason. When you watch a Miyazaki film, it’s easy to see the care and attention that goes into every single frame. But why is his style so distinguishable, even among thousands of other great anime films?
In this week's video, we will try to go beyond mere technique to grasp the philosophy and underlying vision of one of Japan’s greatest directors - Hayao Miyazaki. So, let’s get started!

Just come across your channel and am binge watching your videos! Love the information your are sharing. On the topic of Miyazaki’s movies. Castle in the Sky was by absolute favourite when I was small, but after having lived in Japan for 9 years and being involved in the running of a small local Shinto shrine, now my favourite is, of course, Spirited Away. Keep up the great work with your videos explaining art and entertainment, architecture and etc. ❤️

Welcome! Thank you so much for this lovely feedback. Spirited Away is our favourite too! 😍. PS. Involved in running a small shrine is just WOW! 👍🏻

@@CuriousMuse Yes, I first started as a volunteer and ended up becoming a paid assistant shrine priest there. It was definitely unusual for a foreign national to work as an assistant priest in a Shinto shrine. ⛩

Just started getting into this channel - excellent content! Because I'm a Lupin III fan, I have a soft spot in my heart for Miyazaki's first film, Castle of Cagliostro. You can already see some of his signature motifs in that one (beautiful natural environment, flying, etc.). His work on the original Lupin III TV series is also interesting to check out.

I would love to see more coverage on animation. History is to understand how we got where we are and to ignore a whole medium although in motion that would influence art that has no motion's aesthetic intentionally or not would be foolish. Animation has fostered so many art movements, rubber hose cartooning with maximum bounce, how cartooning traditionally in the west focuses on the mass of things while anime has focuses on the energy of things.
Or as a highlight of an artist/animator, James Baxter, I don't think he's ever directed any films or series himself but his mastery of the pencil any visualizing so many angles and scenarios of even horse's positions (as an example for one challenging creature) is nearly unmatched in his field.

Chihiro doesn't fight a stink spirit. A contaminated water spirit comes to her for help. Between that, the mispronunciation of several names and the superficial Wikipedia article vibe to the writing, I'm not sure if the folks making this video have actually watched these films.

Yes, but his approach is just as “cookie cutter” as Disney’s, just to a different end. Classic fairy tales feature evil characters. There’s nothing wrong with that.
