Great video - Lorena is an excellent guest - she's fearless and incisive w her commentary, and it's exciting to have someone else so versed in stunts and fight choreography connecting w this channel - yes, I agree w this concern about the decline of original material, and its impact on the role of movie stars, etc - well articulated here - my favorite martial arts films include Ashes of Time, Hero, Crouching Tiger, Atomic Blonde, Raid 2, Bride w White Hair, Villainess, Saur Sepuh, Warrior vs Ninja, Dragon Princess

Recent Netflix Korean action series: 'My Name', 'All Of Us Are Dead', 'Sweet Home', most recently 'Bloodhounds'. Some of the best action scenes out there. Are the stars transitioning to Hollywood? No because the usual pattern is come to Hollywood, make one film, then be forgotten. The alternative is to stay home, have a long successful career.

  • @jp3813

The most successful martial arts stars also have something that's popularly associated w/ them that makes them stand out. Bruce Lee was for those looking for a serious & authentic fighter, Jackie Chan was for audiences who love comedy & stunt work, Jet Li was for people who appreciate fantastical & special effects-filled choreography, Chow Yun-fat presented firearms as an extension of kung fu, Michelle Yeoh satiated the hunger for badass heroines in the genre, etc... As incredibly talented Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa, & Iko Uwais are, they're mostly associated w/ certain fighting styles: Wing Chun, Muay Boran, Pencak Silat, etc...Not to say that they don't display any other skills, but perhaps most of those have already been covered by the superstars that came before them. Casual viewers like to simplify what they're gonna get from certain action stars. That's why Bruceploitation damaged most careers that took part in it.

Cynthia Rothrock and Scott Adkins had a serious discussion about the lack of true action movies and lack of original ideas. They mentioned the ability of editors and cinematographers knowing the tricks of making an actor with no real fighting experience look like they do. Michael Jai White even mentioned this before in an interview. And folks want ridiculous shots and moves now, most of which are not truly realistic (and don't care). Plus as a screenwriter, I concur with Loren, it has been this way for decades, nothing original gets greenlit unless a big name actor signs on or puts capital or equity behind it, even then, it has to make a profit. Also complex characters are not always compelling, society has abandoned a lot of complexities of life, for simple rules and laws.

    Yo !
Always great to see Lorena crashing by your channel ! That was a fantastic discussion ! I love her take on the entire martial arts movie industry, and yes, sadly, we don't make them like we used to, because HOLLYWOOD only banks on franchises and known IPs anymore.
Also, not surprising but YES ! She's also a big fan of Everything Everywhere, and Martial Club !
    And that's AWESOME !
Also, it would be hilarious if, after her comments on BATMAN 30 , she actually lands a gig on the next Batman, spending the whole production praying Matt Reeves or James Gunn never finds this vid ^^

One of the earliest movies I remember seeing all on my own (I think I was about 9 then) was Jackie Chan's Project A-II. He seemed like an impossibility at that time... the speed, the stunts, the charisma, and the humor. I'd seen only one Bruce Lee movie back then and he had seemed all serious, but here was a guy who was like a superhero but could make me laugh!
Oh, and speaking of Bruce Lee, a few years ago, I watched a Thai movie starring an unknown face... someone named Tony Jaa. The movie was Ong-Baak. I went back to watch that movie twice again, and the end of the movie saw a standing ovation from the audience all three times. This was in a small theatre in an Indian metropolis.
Jet Li will, of course, Wong Fei Hong in the 'Once Upon a Time in China' series, although I've watched his other Chinese and American films, and have never been disappointed.

also there's a trend in hollywood of flash cuts editing where non-martial artist actors are providing the illusion that they can fight. the biggest early example of this was the bourne series. to the untrained eye, most audience viewers can't tell the difference from real martial artists on screen from the actors (and most probably wouldn't care). you're right about the bottomline: 1) have an interesting story, and 2) have compelling characters for the audience to become emotionally invested in. if a film has these two critical elements, people will even watch bad action.

I love Martial Arts movies but there is also the problem that some martial arts movies have horrible martial arts action. I personally have rewatched movies that I used to love when I was a kid and now I realize that the martial art in those was BS. Flash Point with Donnie Yen is my reference for great martial arts action, but it lacks a compelling plot.

  • @Billy01113
    @Billy01113 ปีที่แล้ว

I strongly agree with Jaby's sentiment that you need a great story and an actor with a great stage presence, for people to take notice of great action. I always have been an action fan , I grew up watching a lot of Chinese kung fu cinema (Asian movies where more previlant here in Europe in these days, than they where in the US back then), all the Chacky Chan and Brue Lee movies I could get my hands on and all the Van Damme and Lundgren movies and I loved them. But perception and audiance expectations change and evolve, in the 80s great stunts where enough, but today it is no longer, for a wider audience). We never had such an amount of choice in what we watch and if we do not like a movie or series, we can simply switch to something else, thus the bar for a movie to break the mold has risen substentially. Another factor is, that in an enviroment where you have hundrets or thousands of movies to choose from at any given time, these choices are overwhelming, which benefits established names. When you see a name or a face, that you know and liked in a previous movie, attatched to a project you instinctivly see it as a garant for something worthwhile and so you are much more likely to engage with it.
I would count IP Man as an estabilshed asian franchise in Europe, it is pretty widely known and so is Donny Yen in genral.
Favorit Martial Arts movie: ... that is a tough one, I would choose "Project A" for it's stunts and humor, "Hero" and "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" for their esthetics and the John Wick movies for their choreography.

The Western also died from the mainstream. These things are good for hipsters. You get your own little niche. Horror was never mainstream but it lives on. Martial Arts movies need to think along those lines and find their loyal audience like Horror did.

I'd love to see some Asian-Americans make this happen. Simu Liu (I consider Asian-Canadians to essentially be Asian-American mostly) has demonstrated that he has the chops to do martial arts on film. Lucy Liu has shown she can direct with American Born Chinese, and I'm sure she could still act and do some action in front of the camera too still.

  • @noxteryn
    @noxteryn ปีที่แล้ว

Former parkour instructor here. The parkour lady is incorrect about the history of parkour.
Parkour was inspired by Georges Hérbert's Méthode Naturelle (back in the early 1900s), not Jackie Chan. Jackie Chan's action sequence style was itself inspired by Buster Keaton. The Yamakasi group was led by one David Belle. David Belle's father, Raymond Belle, was a fire-fighter who had used Méthode Naturelle's teachings to develop a new training regime for navigating verticality in urban environments. David Belle was taught Méthode Naturelle by his father and developed what we know of as parkour today, named after Parcours du Combattant.
Some of Jackie Chan's vaulting style was heavily influenced by Buster Keaton, who himself was influenced by circus acrobats. Any resemblance between Jackie Chan's movement style to parkour is coincidental and simply the result of separate disciplines evolving in parallel across time. (For example, Buster Keaton once performed a vault that is very similar to what is known as a "kong vault" in British parkour schools.) This happens often in martial arts.
In short, what Jackie Chan does is use improvisational techniques to fight or scale obstacles. Parkour is about the systematic and methodical training of moving from A to B as efficiently and safely as possible. They are similar, but it doesn't mean one was inspired by the other. If you look at all the fundamental parkour techniques, you can easily trace them back to basic Méthode Naturelle movements, predating Jackie Chan by half a century.

Off the top of my head, Iko Uwais, Yahya Ruhian, Joe Taslim, especially Iko, are amazing to watch, Lewis Tan, great fighter, has a terrible agent who doesn't get him roles he can shine in.
Daniel Wu and Scott Adkins, however, should be kega stars by now. I absolutely love Scott Adkins and think he has such a great knowledge of the field and respect for its performers. I really wish them success. Daniel Wu has tried to revitalize the genre with a Western twist with Into the Badlands ( incredibly underrated in terms of fights) and American Born Chinese (decent fights, worst wigs I've seen on a series since Jupiter Rising).
Lastly, there's the series based on Bruce Lee's original idea (that became Kung Fu) Warrior that has some good action scenes as well. Star is a chap called Andrew Koji.
All the above people should be bigger stars than they are now but aren't, well, because of what was discussed. I.e. studios want franchises.
I would argue that the reason the studio execs want franchises is that, they're playing it safe, they want something that they think is guaranteed. Why? I'd reckon its because of the insanely high cost of movies these days. Making movies is essentially a gamble. If, for example, The Marvels doesn't make, say 800 million dollars, then its considered a failure and a loss for the studio.
Since the stakes are so high, all the execs want to "play it safe" essentially and opt for the franchises since they can't be seen as having lost hundreds of millions of money for the company. And the cycle just continues.
There are obvious exceptions to this but I think the general thinking is as above.

The closest thing we have to one today is Scott Adkins and a few hot stunt girls who can fight, flip and take hits. I think the main reason, they won't be any new martial art/stunt superstars is ... Lawyers. It's too much liability to do hardcore stunts. Too much liability means, too much money at stake, so the film industry won't invest that much money on it unless it's an established superstar, and established superstars are like 60 years old. Nobody was worrying about getting sued back when Jackie Chan and his stunt team were improvising how to crash thru glass and fire.
We just need more viral videos w/ young dudes, brave enough to do death defying stunts w/o scientology money, and hot girls willing to fight and take hits w/o the temptation of starting Onlyfans.

Simply put the interest for martial art movies is fading from audience & contribute to movie makers take less interest creating one.

I kinda agree with jaby, but john wick for example has a pretty basic ridiculous plot. So it isn't the lack of a good story that's the problem. So I agree with the fact of hollywood becoming more superherofied and boring. Marvel was good till about phase 3, then it sucked and by then the wider hollywood was franchising itself off to ape it.
Lorena is a great guest though she talks a bit much haha, though I like it, she doesn't mean to do it on purpose, she just seems honest and passionate.

The current superstars, Jackie Chan, Donny Yen, etc. have sold their souls to the CCP.
So as far as why no more foreign superstars?
    Maybe it's for the better.

interesting video but i disagree with its take. superhero movies and a lack of original ideas didnt kill the martial arts action star in hollywood. it was the matrix. that filmed showed studios you can take actors with no martial art expertise and train them. so why hire scott adkins (in their mind) when they can get (insert name of popular actor) and train them for a few months just like the matrix

They are to a degree. Tony Jaa isn't the household name that guys like Jackie Chan or Jet Li were back in the 2000s. Martial Arts movies aren't a draw now, like they were in the 90s and 2000s. As great as those films are, they're not huge hits at the moment.

Film industries have become so afraid of a flop, they've made more flops than ever. Film is an art form that needs to breath, and they are strangling Film makers.
