I played with my reed above the mouthpiece for many years, it was just the way i learned and no one corrected me until much later. Now I find moving the reed position above or below for me depends on how worn in the reed is. Just my 2 cents.
If I'm not careful with reed position (not just front to back position), and I get the base of the reed a little bit off to one side, even though the tip of the reed looks like it's placed ok, squeak city, here I come....
