    I personally find an ivory coloured dinner jacket with peaked lapels more appealing than one with a shawl-collar. The formality of the peaked lapels helps to balance out the "less formal" nature of the ivory dinner jacket.

    I disagree on the peaked lapel off white dinner jacket. The very picture that you displayed of Sean Connery as James Bond had an off white dinner jacket that had peaked lapels. I agree to stay away from notched collars but a peaked lapel jacket certainly does not indicate it is a "cheaper" variant and in my opinion is perfectly acceptable.

    If you’re going with a tartan dinner jacket, I would avoid black watch unless you served in that regiment because veterans can get a little touchy about it. There are literally thousands of tartans to choose from, so I would look into that to see what you actually like the most. Of course, you can wear whatever you want and the black watch thing applies mostly to kilts.

    • @Lensmaster1
      @Lensmaster1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Black Watch is a universal tartan. It was originally just called the government tartan and then became known as Black Watch after the regiment that wore it as uniform. It became the Campbell clan tartan and is clan hunting tartan for the clans Grant and Monro.
      If someone is going to wear tartan for black tie then Black Watch is a good choice because it's overall dark colors gives it a formal look.

    I've never been a fan of the shawl collar on a tuxedo. It looks less formal than peak lapels to me. I like the look of Bond's dinner jacket in Spectre. Very sharply tailored, and arguably one of the best suits the character has ever worn.

    As always a very excellent review. I beg to differ only slightly regarding the dinner jacket or tuxedo with peaked lapel. I have a fine Italian Pal Zileri peak-lapelled double brested black tux which was surely not cheap and I think its fine albeit a bit more formal than the single breasted shawl style. I do agree the latter is smoother and more chique and often my first choice, depending on the occasion. I have also worn my Favourbrook black & gold velvet smoking jacket though at less formal dinners and at Christmas with my family though sometimes also at my London Club on occasion, when a little more eccentricity is allowed.

  • @likeitout

    The British military still wear mess uniforms and it’s very common in the U.K. As opposed to most foreign militaries where the uniform for dinner functions is basically a No1 or No2 uniform, (sometimes altered only by the addition of a bow tie) the British armed forces have very strict dress codes for mess functions. The mess uniform must be worn at any of these formal events. All ranks of senior NCO and above will be measured for a mess uniform although the ranks of private to junior NCO would only be issued if they are required to wear one for an event. The medals worn are the miniatures.

    Something often overlooked about boutonnières is that precut buttonholes are generally smaller than you need them to be, and can *not* altered once they've been sewn. You're better off buying a jacket without a buttonhole, and asking a tailor to cut and sew a boutonnière for you. (30-38mm for the traditional carnation.)

    How do you differentiate between white tuxedo and white dinner jacket

    • @Lensmaster1
      @Lensmaster1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tuxedo is just the American name for a black dinner jacket worn with matching black pants. A white dinner jacket is just a variation on the standard dinner jacket developed to be worn with the black pants in tropical and other warm locations. A white tuxedo is an all white formal suit sometimes worn at proms and by lounge singers. It is not part of the black tie dress code.

    I have a question; if I wear a midnight blue dinner jacket, then for the pants, can I wear same color or should be black pants?

      A true midnight blue dinner jacket is worn with matching midnight blue pants.

    Hello, would you wear a cummerbund with a tuxedo. Is it a must? What color cummerbund would you wear with a royal blue tuxedo?

    • @Lensmaster1
      @Lensmaster1 ปีที่แล้ว

      With a single breasted dinner jacket you should wear a cummerbund or a waistcoat. With a double breasted dinner jacket it's not necessary because your waistband will always be covered by the jacket. The only blue that is appropriate for a dinner jacket is midnight blue which effectively looks black under most artificial light. The choices with that are to have a waistcoat made out of matching material, a midnight blue cummerbund if you can find one, or a black cummerbund.

    I wanted to ask a question but it is not really related to this tuxedo topic.
    So basically in my school we have uniform. We have to wear a navy blazer and black trousers. So my question is - can I wear dark brown shoes with this combination , or only black shoes are appropriate?

    • @Lensmaster1
      @Lensmaster1 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have a regimented school uniform that doesn't specify shoe color? This is a uniform in black and navy so wear only black shoes.

    Isn't a buttonhole a bit strange in shawl collar?
    I mean in a regular lapel it kinds of makes sense as it could (originally) be used to close the jacket even more on cold and windy days, by unfolding the lapels and bottoming it at the neck (something I regularly actually do on my overcoat). But on a shawl collar that hole serves no purpose except for holding a flower, and hence I find it a bit strange to see such a hole without an associated button (fictional as it may be on modern jacket, there is still a place that it could actually have been.)

    • @Lensmaster1
      @Lensmaster1 ปีที่แล้ว

      A single stripe on the outside of each leg matching the lapel material. No cuffs.

    In black tie, are you allowed to wear a string bow tie? (Colonel Sanders tie)

    • @Lensmaster1
      @Lensmaster1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, only a standard black bow tie. That is the essence of the dress code.

    I don't have the money for a dinner jacket or a tuxedo, but I'm thinking of adding a burgundy velvet tie to my navy suit and white shirt, with a red boutonniere.

    I bought a full tuxedo from Gagliardi but they cut the waist of the trousers way to low + the hem broke down between the legs after using it 2 times. Beware!

    Would one wear a wing collar with a dinner jacket?

    • @Lensmaster1
      @Lensmaster1 ปีที่แล้ว

      A wing collar shirt is not often worn with black tie anymore and then only with the most formal details. An odd dinner jacket is low on the formality scale and is only worn with a turn down collar
