  • Learning how to surf can be expensive, and often information about how to get better is 'drip fed'. This video explains everything you need to know about learning to surf...for FREE! From equipment, to standing up and even basic turns. And yes, the video goes for 10 minutes, however the tutorial goes for 8... :)

      Was it difficult to pick up ? And if so....did others around you ridicule you? I'm 21 and am dying to learn how to surf. I'm very nervous too, especially since the only practice I have with balancing is from skiing

      @@TheSurfersJourney Quick question, I've never surfed before, but - does the type of swimsuit matter for surfing? Any material or gear to choose over the other? And if so, do I need a full body suit to protect my skin from anything?

      @@Great_Lake_Surfer Just make sure your wetsuit is appropriate for the water temperature where youll be surfing. And no one will care about you being there as long as you're not endangering them or yourself

    First of all, I love your videos! My little 7 year old (and I) are stoked about our surfing lessons this coming August. I am the kind of person that always does extensive research when I make plans to learn anything. I want to wrap my head around whatever it is so that when I actually get to doing (whatever it is I am going to do or learn); I have a mental grasp and have practiced it in my mind already. It has always yielded awesome results for me in cutting learning curves through the power of visualization.
    So, naturally...I have been researching and learning everything I can about surfing (that's how I found your channel) and looking at surfing films. I love it when they show the surfers in slow motion while doing maneuvers. I noticed something that people reading this might think that I am crazy:
    When I watch adept surfers surf, it reminds me of dancing, especially Balinese, Breakdancing, Popping, and Hip Hop dancing. I am convinced that surfing is not surfing but dancing with the ocean. Just like dancers, some surfers' dance moves look more stylish than others. I don't know if I am the only one who has acquired this paradigm. I would love to read or hear your thoughts on this.
    I look forward to my lessons. They seem so far away!!!! Cheers, and keep those awesome videos coming!

      Hi Nathaniel, thanks for sharing mate, some interesting points. In regards to comparing surfing to dancing, I think that makes sense for sure. Good luck with your lessons!

    I have really been struggling w my pop-up. I skateboard and snowboard (and do it goofy - right foot in front); I was told to surf the same way I do those sports. This video said to have your dominant (the foot you kick a ball with) foot in the back (I was told to do the opposite) and I tried popping up with the left foot in front and WOW!!!! The difference is amazing! It's far more comfortable this way! 😍

    Omg thanks so much, this video is exactly what I have been looking for! Most vids forget us newbies need to take baby steps to learn the feel of the water and start their tutorials at unbroken waves. I have been dreaming of surfing for years, just bought my foamie, and will be getting in the water for the first time this coming week! Been watching tutorial vids, doing excercises to build up muscle, and doing practice popups in my spare time but I know I still am not ready to tackle unbroken waves! This video finally offered the first steps actually in the water to get the confidence Im desperately craving! Can't wait to put it into practice!
    Cheers from Martha's Vineyard Massachusetts, brother!

    great video! quick question though - in your previous one you mentioned that you would recommend either a longboard or a fish (because it could suit eventual progression) -- is there any reason you focused more on a foam longboard this time around? would the learning curve on a fish be too steep for most beginners? thanks in advance :)

    • @TheSurfersJourney
      @TheSurfersJourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I focused on the longboard because it is the easier of the two. With popping up and riding a wave as fast as possible the main goal, rather than gradual progression being considered. That being said, a high volume fish is still a good choice for those striving for progression as fast as possible. More to follow on this :)

      @@TheSurfersJourney Ryan, can you do a video discussing the first things you need to work on or adjust when you down size for the first time? For example, I have been riding a 7'6 fun board & now have on order a 6'4 fish. The first few sessions that I take it out, what are some things to concentrate on? I am 5'2.
