    We have some older videos that feature bass fishing but nothing recently, however there is a bass fishing feature coming out in the near future so please stay tuned. :)

    It depends on how much you want to do and how much you want to spend of course, and find a balance between those. For trout fishing, a 4 or 5wt is your standard setup. 9'/2.70m is the typical length, but shorter if you are fishing in smaller creeks. My advice would be to invest in a good rod. The reel is just there to hold your line and you can always upgrade to a nicer reel later. For line, Scientific Angler GPX is a good one to start with as a floating line.

    Strangely, I almost never get mad at losing a fish (and that's not because I catch too many, far from it!). To me, hooking them is just as satisfying as landing them. I do get frustrating by other little yet important things, such as not being able to position the boat properly due to wind, bad casting, tangles, etc.

    Thanks. The prices are listed on Ruddocks Ranch actually. There are also customized group rates for those who want to book the entire lake to themselves, which is pretty much what we did so you have to email Kevin directly for that.

    Yeah this is our best trip so far. The weather was cool but not terrible. We had a tarp and campfire set up by the lake so every now and then we could come in, warm up and relax before going out to catch more fish again... ;)

    We have been in touch with Douglas Lake Ranch and just need to sort out a few things to get a video done there. It probably will not be this year because my schedule is pretty much all booked up, so look for it next year. :)

  • @FishingwithRod

    Well normally we stick to 6lb test Fluorocarbon, but in this case we bumped it up to 8lb test mono because the fish were not shy and heavier, more abrasion-resistant line is needed in the snaggy area.

    We were not using lures but flies. To see exactly what were used, check out the gear talk feature for this video, should be the video after this one in our channel.

  • @FishingwithRod

    Yes I do. In fact we did quite a bit of trolling during this trip when we didn't want to anchor and fish. We have been thinking about doing a trolling video lately. :)

    This is a catch and release fishery. We release fish at waters where they are required to be released, and keep fish occasionally when we are allowed to do so.

    That trout has probably run into that snag for cover before. Prolly' a clever dominate male, LOL! once they surface never let them dive better to snap the line than snag out bass style.

    What dry fly were you using?
    Since it was so shallow, you decided to use the dry fly/floating line, correct?

    It's fishing, not catching, and those big ones that get away make you come back for more!

    Although I agree with you, at the same time, you are paying for an experience. The limit of 8 people on the water at a time, the fly only, mandatory C&R, and the fact that when you see someone else, you KNOW they are there for the same love of the hobby you are. As silly as it seems with umpteen thousand lakes in BC, all free for the public, I have no qualms with a few being pay to play. Oh, and protected, safe, abundant wild fish!

    I loved this videos and it was really good, but what would be a good setup for stocked rainbows? and i can't use a fly rod because the lake is tiny and is only about 10-15 ft across. i have tried many things like roe and just plain old worms. you got any tips?

  • @flyfishaholic

    Ross can be great fun, right at the mouth, and slightly into the skagit river (no retention there though). Fish are smaller, but plentiful, although there are some huge bull trout there. Mosquitoes can be BRUTAL around shore, make sure to bring lots of repellant!

    Can you advise me about fly fishing rod, reel and other equipment? I want to try that kind of fishing but I really don`t know how to choose fishing tackle.
    You know that when you come to a shop, a saler can fool you just like that and after all I`ll buy something useless or bad equipment.

    Sage is of course a very good brand to go with due to the quality of their rods and the warranty. St Croix, G.Loomis are also good choices. You should match your line to the rod, so 5wt line for 5wt rod, and a reel that can hold enough 5wt line and backing. The best thing to do is to go into a fly fishing store, try out a few different 5wt setups and see which one is comfortable in your hand.

  • @FishingwithRod
    @FishingwithRod  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    DanderJohn has covered most of what I think about the cost of a trip such as this. It really depends on what you are looking for. If you only get to go lake fishing once a year and want everything to go as planned, then it is worth investing the money to do this. If you are an angler who frequently takes advantage of all the free-accessed lakes in BC, then this is probably not for you. Having the privacy at a lake like this probably the biggest appeal for us.

    Those cutthroat trout in Sakinaw Lake are offsprings of stocks that were released up to the late 1980s and are definitely fantastic gamefish. For coastal lake cutthroat trout, we usually fish with large patterns as they tend to feed on stickback, sculpin, leech, etc. Pretty tough to get them in the summer as they stay in deep like you said. The best way is probably to troll for them in really deep water as we do sometimes in Whistler at a lake where large cutties are found.

  • @FishingwithRod
    @FishingwithRod  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mosquitoes can be pretty bad in BC in the summer... It really is hard to predict how bad it can be, but we've been pretty lucky overall, mosquitoes seem to be absent at most lakes we go to. There are a couple of lakes where they are really bad but we keep going back each year because the fishing is just too good to be missed... :)
    Thanks for watching!

    Absolutely. Hopefully it will not be too long before we have them available for everyone. :)

  • @AUGundam
    @AUGundam 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If I were fishing a lake like this with bait, what would you suggest?

  • @FishingwithRod
    @FishingwithRod  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it would depend on a few factors, such as time of the year/temperature of water near surface, what they are feeding on, etc. Leeches do travel near the surface at times, so I don't see why not if there are nothing else to eat. If fish are keying on insects, then you are more likely to catch fish on those patterns than a leech pattern.

    Thanks! That's really great to hear. That's pretty much the direction we've wanted our videos to go from the beginning, to entertain but also to educate. Too many fishing shows have a tendency to focus more on showcasing their catches for a long time instead of worrying about their welfare. We only show our catches briefly. The good thing with TH-cam is, you can keep replaying and pausing if you want to see the fish again. ;)

    • @pitbull448
      @pitbull448 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FishingwithRod thats my point. I just moved here from praries.
      Yes we have different regions. But all that means is fishing seasons start at different times.
      But in general. Max caught fish limits are same no matter what lake or river are fished.
      I just arrivex Vancouver island 4 days ago. And bought fresh water lisence.
      Now im told most fresh water species are catch and release only.
      And all streams,rivers and laked are single hook no barb?
      And all fly fishing only is max one fly. And no beads can be used?
      So basically im wanting to know. Gor a guy who likes to keep fish and feed my family. Is it worth having fresh water lisence?
      Now most of this has been passed threw multiple people.
      But i was told buy saltwater license cause i can keep everything? But then i hear there is a ban on hatchery salmon aswell.
      Im just do confused about what can or cant be done.
      And how it changes lake to lake.
      Id love to tslk about this and learn the island.
      I was so happy move here gor fishing
      .... now it seems more of a hassle then pleasure at this point

    Hi Rod!
    I'm loving the video. I'm an avid stillwater guy, spending between 50-60 days a year chasing big trout in lakes, primarily Henrys Lake in Idaho. I have a couple of tips that might boost your catch rate.
    #1 Use a 6weight on this lake.. helps keeps em outa the snags! 2x Flourocarbon leader helps too ( if allowed)
    #2 Keep your rod tip in the water while stripping. It increases your sensitivity to strikes.
    Great video! Thanks for making this and posting.

I have to say, after everything I have learned, the number one priority to me, is the Fish. As long as they are safe and relatively unharmed, Im happy. One of the reasons I love your site and videos, is because YOU care as well. Ive seen too many fish that need minutes of reviving to take off. But when you let yours go, he took off as all C&R fish should.
