In short, Lanegan had very little sex appeal and wasn't exactly enthusiastic about fame and the Conner brothers were two fat guys. Even the days where good grunge bands were getting signed were full of MTV bullshit that was all about image.
The real crime is that Lanegan's solo stuff never generated many hits either. That's a whole different musical realm.

My 1st meeting with Mark Lanegan. In 1989 i tagged along with a friend who wrote for a magazine to do an interview with Sonic Youth 2 hours before show. The Screaming Trees were the opening act. I went to the washroom & noticed Lanegan hunched over a toilet vomiting, I asked if he was ok & *Mark replied "yeah, i'm fine. Everything is cool"* soon after i went to Lee Ranaldo & said " i think the singer from the Trees is really sick, he's in the washroom vomiting" *Lee replied "oh that's normal he's always throws up before a show, he get's stage fright"*

To qoute Neil Young "Another time or place another civilization , would really make this life fell so complete" and i know i sound like a dumb nostalgia sick teen and i guess i am to some degree but there are so many bands i woild love to see live that I'll never get to see from the 90s and just to be alive when so many of my favourite bands where new and to experience the slightly more innocent pre 9/11 world, to make the "whats stüssy stand for?" Joke and have people actually know the brand, to see pulp fiction and trainspotting at the cinemas . I'm not just seeing it from an idealistic lense tho trust me I've heard of the 90s through the eyes of someone couch surfing/living in their car with other stuff going on ontop of that.
