- A historical and biographical picture about the great Russian naval commander Fyodor Ushakov.
The events of the film take place in 1785-1791 during the war with Turkey. Prince Potemkin, the favorite of Catherine II, entrusts the young Ushakov with the construction of ships. The Black Sea Fleet is created in the shortest possible time, despite the plague epidemic and fires, and Ushakov becomes a national hero. However, court intriguers manage to turn the empress against him with lies and denunciations.

What a charismatic actor in the lead role as Admiral Ushakov. They don't make movie stars like that any more.
to see what real labour is like to construct the ships and the using the swings to practice gunnery is something i never heard of before, i love these old Russian movies
Yes. Many of these old films are really going all out both casting and setting. Its like watching an opera. They are very grande.

My, Khachaturian composed the music for this film. Amazing that such famous composer worked on this film.
During Stalin's lifetime, they shot very high-quality expensive films about the history of Russia's domestic and foreign policy.

@@Gunni1972Ushakov was a great proponent of sticking to traditional line of battles during fleet actions and letting better training prevail which of course would work against the Turks, not that he actually had any great victorious fleet actions, after Nelson’s example in the Royal Navy if you only managed to capture or sink two ships of the line after a fleet action you would be lucky to keep your job but apparently in Russia that makes you a great naval hero. Nelson on the other hand “Crossed the T” at both the Nile and Trafalgar defeating the conventional lines of battle which Ushakov so loved. And the fact that Trafalgar happened proves the copycat comment wrong because obviously copycats on the Continental side failed to copy the success at the Nile. To even compare Nelson with Ushakov would be a great insult but to accuse Nelson of copying some salty russian who couldn’t keep his job is pure madness.

Byl to nejlepší Ruský admirál , nikdy po tom už ruské námořnictvo nemělo takové úspěchy . Jeho taktiku používal i admirál Horatio Nelson , nejvíce 28.10. 1805 v bitvě u mysu Trafalgar .
What about battle of Sinope?
Fine movie, right up there with Captain Horatio Hornblower, Master and Commander, and Damn the Defiant. I`m just a sucker for any sea adventure set in 18- 19 centuries and this one is top notch.Excellent sets, costumes, and model-miniatures. 9 out of 10 star rating.
The film clearly portrays Ushakov as 'Russia's Admiral Horatio Nelson' before Britain's Nelson had achieved his naval victories. Nelson, aware of the Russian navy, and as a young naval officer is seen in a film scene discussing Ushakov's naval tactics which by inference suggests Nelson later bases his navel tactics on the great Ushakov. Speaking as a citizen of the UK we need to research more about the great Russian naval commander Fyodor Ushakov within the received library of knowledge that surely has to put Russian naval commander Fyodor Ushakov as a supreme naval commander of world history. 🙂

Боюсь , что книги про Потёмкина на английском за авторством иностранцев ,если таковые имеются, окажутся ,мягко говоря, не совсем объективными. Взять хотя бы известный фейк про " Потёмкинские деревни" 😀, который распространили иностранцы , участвовавшие в поездке императрицы в Крым. Да и из русской литературы вспоминается только роман в двух томах В.Пикуля "Фаворит", но он вряд ли переведён на английский.😞

Is it me or is it a bit wierd that the Soviets in 1953 made a film promoting a member of the aristocracy when Russia was ruled by royalty that the Soviets had worked so hard to get rid off
I don't understand why many people believe the lie that the USSR was struggling with its history? The USSR fought against the abominable rulers who led the country to three revolutions and millions of victims of wars and repression. Peter the Great (there is a 1937 film of the same name) and Catherine II were considered aristocrats for the USSR, but patriots who did a lot of useful and necessary things for the state.

Russian navy has deteriorated a lot since those days. The ships aren't well-built, they use very cheap materials. There's corruption. I remember the Kursk disaster, (not Putin's current Kursk disaster but the *Kursk submarine disaster)* .....of course people liked Russia in those days, everyone tried to help. But I don't think it would be the same today, I hope nothing like that ever happens to some Russian sailors now because there wouldn't be much hope for them with the corruption in Russia, it would be covered up. I wouldn't want to drown, anyway this was a good film.

Japan is (and was) not tiny. But yes, we remember Tsushima, and understand why it happened. The main cause of that catastrophe was not the navy, but the stupid and irresponsible policy of tzarist regime.
