10 years ago, I told Lori that sooner or later we'll have to grow crops in a hoop house and out of the rain. It just didn't think it would be this soon.

Have you ever thought to collect some of your rainwater and have it tested?
Nitrogen oxide, sulphuric acid, aluminum oxide, ground level ozone and other crap I forgot. Lori cares for our local beach at the lake and there were 3 dead fish visible from the shore on saturday. No joke.
I am so happy you are keeping your channel alive. I am having the same issues with outdoor growing here in Texas. This toxic spraying has to come to a halt, and fast!
I doubt it'll stop anytime soon since the white house is funding it :-/
Hello Boss: Have an idea for an experiment. Go to your nearest gardening supply store and find some GMO cucumbers from Monsanto that match the ones you're growing inside the greenhouse. , and plant them outside where they'll get the toxic rain. Let's see what happens.
My thinking is if the GMO cukes cannot survive the toxic rain, then fine and good. HOWEVER, if the GMO cukes _thrive_ in toxic rain, then maybe somebody's trying to kill off in your area all the heirloom / open-pollinated food that's NOT controlled or marketed by Monsanto.
Just an idea of an experiment.
Good point Bill but probably not necessary. Take a close look at the leaves on the trees, they don't like this poison rain either.
My girlfriend (college grad) asked me how come they pickle peppers, green beans, beets, and other fruit & vegetables, but they don't pickle cucumbers (???) 😂 😂 please explain. P.S. she has yellow hair. I'll keep her around, she's good for 😂 laughs--😂

My best guess after gardening for 44 yrs is that anything with a cover over it like your greenhouse is a micro climate. It has been said by Eliot Coleman that it's like moving your garden a zone and a half south. Plus the fact you had a insulated sweat shirt on tells me it must be chilly in the morning or at nght. I bet the temperature in your greenhouse at night is a lot warmer than outside of it. I wish I could wear a jacket here on Delmarva but I'd die from heat exhaustion. No problems here with what you are talking about with the trees or chem rain. I just wish it would rain. It's so dry the catfish have ticks on them. Have a good summer, and hope your garden perks up. Getting a lot of tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and string beans right now.
With the greenhouse being wide open all the time, the temp isn't much different than outside. You saw the difference with the peppers from inside to out and they are only 3' inside the wide open doorway. I feel that has something to say about the rain.

Another informative video. With 3 year's worth of verification / validation due to your controlled experimentation, the rain appears to be the root cause of the lack of growth performance of the outdoor plants. Since you highlighted that the green house is wide open , that reduces the variability in temperature between the 2 environments. Curious, do you pollinate the indoor plants with a duster, do you water them with water from the old hand dug well? Would be interesting to test the PH in each for comparison .
Still plans to visit us folks down in N.C ?

It seems like JC has come up with a theory that he is determined to defend rather than to test objectively. I find it difficult to believe that there are “toxins” in the rain which have either escaped the notice of agricultural professionals and academics or that they have all joined in a conspiracy of silence. While I appreciate that “toxic rain” is possible it seems unlikely.
@@noyopacific This year I put in a 250 gal tote to catch rainwater and have used it 90% of the time. My garden has not shown any signs of problems other than heat stress. There is maybe a possibility that the train wreck in Ohio that they think now the fall out reached as far as upstate NY

Flight Radar 24. I have hundreds of them screenshoted doing the same thing in Australia. I've been growing veges for 40 years and now struggling to grow anything outside at all.😢
If you document the registration #s of those tankers and then search those numbers, you will see that the same jets fly the same circles day after day. 1600 gallons of fuel per hour to fly in circles. wtf...
This year I built a small temporary greenhouse on the side of my cabin for my cucumbers, zucchini and peppers. And while they have only been in the ground for a month and temps here have been ranging from overnight lows in the mid-40’s to highs in the upper 80’s the plants are doing great! Not as amazing as yours, but nonetheless I am pleased with their growth. Always love seeing what is working for you. 😊

In my first garden over 50 years ago I planted a 40 foot row of cucumbers on 6 foot high chicken wire. I picked three or four times a day. We gave away tons, and my wife pickled so many kinds she got burned out and told me to never plant them again.

Having worked in a large greenhouse I can tell you there are factors, heat, humidity, better constancy of temps, soil components, manual ventilation, etc that go into making greenhouse plants prosper and grow into healthy plants. Just like us humans, plants love continuity in many ways, you will always have better and more vigorous growth in a greenhouse environment.
I agree with all that you said but it doesn't rule out the horribly acidic rain we have and how some plants, especially the cukes and peppers appear to have a very low tolerance to it. The peppers only 3' inside a wide open doorway really don't have much of a difference in climate than the ones outside the door.

Great start, can't wait to hear the rest of the story 😊. Oh, I totally agree, it was in the doc "What in the world are they spraying?" It showed grgrowing in greenhouses etc, did better than those grown outdoors under the the rain of the agenda.
Appreciate the updates, Boss......we too, are having ridiculously better results growing indoors vs out.
No comparison to indoor growing vs. outside.My greenhouse is much more temp stable at night and overall warmer due to the raised beds.The beds release heat all night long and the plants thrive.I'm also pushing to grow less outside every year and want to increase the size of my greenhouse,way easier to control,plants,bugs,watering.Keep moving forward.
Its time for a high tunnel to cover the outside gardens.
And people drink that rain water.

We have not gotten a lot of rain in over a month. So, we have to water our greenhouse and outdoor beds with well water. They are all doing well.

Boss I'm not doubting you about the chemicals in the rain one bit, but theres something you might have missed. Your outdoor beds are mulched and sometimes the microbes in the soil will tie up nutrients for a bit while the soil is trying to compost all that material. So the nitrogen isn't available to the plants. Another thing to check into is do a pH test on those beds. I found out my garden beds were to alkaline from the leaves and wood ash we had been using to amend the beds. Plants were alive but not really growing until i started adding the soil acidifier. Then they took off! I also switched to pine shavings ( yep chicken bedding) for my mulch because it breaks down fast and it acidifies the soil at the same time.

The mulch may make some difference but the other plants in the same outdoor beds as the cukes are doing fine. So after 3 years of doing the same thing, with the same results, it appears that the cukes have a very low tolerance to the acid rain.
Boss guess what, I love your cucumbers, they remind me of a story. When I graduated college I had aspirations to be a golf course superintendent. I left my home town with my graduation present, an airline ticket to Atlanta Georgia. I got a job at Atlanta Country Club and I was on my way. The only problem was I had no money for lunches. The superintendent did grow a garden by the maintenance barn. The only vegetable that was ready was the cucumbers. { side note, are cucumbers a fruit or a vegetable.} To make a short story longer I robbed his garden of cucumbers so I would have something to eat for lunch. They almost hit the spot but by 2:00pm I was running on empty. You doing this video you really bring back some great memories. Thanks a bunch.
Agreed! Keep the rain off. I’ve notice the pine trees turned brown they seem to be ok now. I’ve also noticed what I can only say looks like burn holes on my maple trees. Acid rain or something
That might be sunspot. That happened to my. Maple a few years. Ago,
Same here. Those pines that turned brown within 10 days time have lost their needles and bouncing back. The climate didn't change in 10 days, beetles didn't move in and out and neither did the pine fungus the book nerds blaming it on. A blast of Toxic rain turned them brown. When they spray sulphur dioxide in the sky and it mixes with water, it becomes sulphuric acid and that's why all the leaves look like they do.
Chicken poop is great fertilizer! For years we had a fig "bush" it never grew into a tree, until we got chickens and my Mother put chicken poop around the base of the tree 😅

It's a 100 degrees here in the central Georgia swamps today, only thing growing in my garden is okra, peas, and peppers, but I'm canning chili today in the air conditioner

How are you testing, please? With what, I mean
For the last 2 years I've had the same issues with the Cucumbers but this year I've been rinsing off the plants with City Water (Hamilton, Ohio) after every rain and the plants are growing extremely well. I also moved the plants to different raised beds than the last 2 years. Moving the Tomato's to where the cucumbers were and the Cucumbers to where the Tomato's were. My best tomato plant is the one the dog has been watering. He can't get to the cucumber plants.
Even allowing for some transplant shock, there should not be that much difference from inside to outside. Inside looks like you planted them months before outside. It’s hard to believe they were all started together. Just amazing. You’re definitely going to have a bountiful harvest.
Agreed. The first year I experimented with the cukes indoors, I put the best plants outside and got the same results. They just can't tolerate the acid rain.

They grow better for you inside because of your climate. Iam in northwest Missouri and my cucumbers do fabulous outside, but our days are warmer so are our nights.
Mine always did fine outside too but they don't tolerate the rain anymore.
I think it's time to build a geodome greenhouse that can take our Canadian snow load! Our garden this year is so bad even though we have plenty of rain. "Poison" is an understatement.
Plenty of poison rain. Take a close look at the leaves on the trees and you'll see how they aren't liking this rain either.

My my....I had not considered toxins in the rain. I did cut back/simplify based on results from last year. Cukes challenge me because of thrips and they are so ugly my chickens tend to walk away from them. Tomatoes from seed check. Pumpkins and butternut squash check. Potatoes, onions and garlic check. Asparagus down a bit but you know my peppers look like yours....hmmm. On the other hand the brussel sprouts from seed are quite amazing currently but I won't hold my breath on them till later cause last year I had an issue with the leader rot so with this rain it may be a terrible year for it again.

My "indoor" peppers are only 3' from the doorway and the doors are wide open. Only difference is the rain doesn't fall on them.

I grow cukes outside and so far they are growing as in previous years. Vining on the fence and full of blossoms. I amend the soil with all the food waste coming from the preparation of meals. I have a tomato plant growing in the greenhouse which is growing much faster then the outside plants. I contribute that to a more controlled environment with the added heat. I water my plants with harvested rainwater when rain fall is sparse. I use no commercial fertilizer. Do you think there could be a toxic element in the leaves or other material you put on the outside garden. If the trees are being affected, perhaps the leaves also. Just a thought. I so enjoy your informative videos. I live in Michigan.
The leaves on all the trees look horrible. I don't believe the mulch has anything to do with this as other plants in the very same bad as the cukes are doing good. I've mulched for years and always grew good cukes until about 4 years ago. The cukes and peppers apparently have a very low tolerance for the acid rain.
Hi Boss! Your outside garden is doing better than ours. This will be the last year to plant cucumbers from seed directly in the garden. They'll be started inside and put out as transplants. Non grew this year. Our yellow beans look awful. Tomatoes are starting to look good though. You seem to always have a great greenhouse garden.
...it has been a sad year here in the NW part of 0regon. My best year was 2O19...no matter what I planted throughout the Summer, it produced!!! Amazing peppers and tomatoes that Summer. It has gotten worse and worse each Summer...maybe, that was the pIan!!!
2019 was out best year as well and if you put 2 and 2 together, this was in the time frame when Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris Agreement on climate change mitigation. The spraying stopped, the sky was blue, the stars were spectacular and fall foliage was outstanding. Now the white house is funding the spraying program and the proof is in the pudding. Incredible video Boss!!! I've had simular results here in Erie County pa. Zucchini booming like crazy but my yellow crook neck squash look like urs and my butternut somewhere in the middle as are urs. I split my cucumbers, peppers n meters in half this year. Half in raised beds n half in my ground garden where, just like urs the ground is far more enhanced n rich. I like to experiment myself. The ground garden plants far ahead of the ones in raised beds. I'm blown away by ur indoor cucumbers tho!!! We had 2 inches of rain today from 4 am til 3pm. My plants in raised beds have yellowed almost instantly from it. I believe ur theory on toxic bullshit in the rain is in fact proven n no longer myth lol. As always take care my friend
I'm thinking some plants can tolerate the toxins more than others. Lori had a beautiful hanging flower pot in the greenhouse. She hung it in the garden and after getting rained on only twice. It looked like crap. It's back inside recuperating.
@@thebossoftheswamp after speaking with the fella at the local greenhouse I've been going to for years I had asked about hanging basket health. He recommended that for flowers every 3rd watering add 1 tablespoon of miracle grow per gallon of water. If u have hanging baskets with fruit or veggies, once they start producing do the miracle grow every other. My hanging cucumber and strawberries noticed substantial gains from this method
inside kukes definitely but still with them inside mine are about 1/3 the height, i think the secret is just being that wee bit warmer, my greenhouse is very draughty.
My greenhouse is wide open. Very little temp difference due to the air convection.

Jim have you heard or seen a utube video Beer and Iron? The guy uses store bought charcoal briquettes and counts out the charcoal briquettes to put on the dutch oven lid.
Lots of people use that but I'm old school and too cheap to waste money on charcoal.
@@thebossoftheswamp I look for branches while in parks with my dog to mix with charcoal briquettes and go thru the green dumpsters looking for sycamore, walnut and other wood to mix in. My 3 dogs love to ride with me to go look thru dumpsters in the city. 1 time while looking for a heavy duty electric cord for an electric hot plate going thru trash dumpsters there was a pasta maker machine in the box, unopened in plastic bags. Several times I found almost new toaster ovens in the dumpster.
Hey boss, just to be sure that it is the toxic rain that is destroying your plants, why don't you use the soil from the outside that you think is better than the one inside and use it inside next year for your new season and let's see what happens. Maybe 2 plants for experiment. I am curious to find out. Great videos as usual.
I would do that if my friends in town weren't having the very same issues with their cukes and peppers. Theirs have run parallel to mine. Four years ago we all did great and it's been declining since. The trees here reflect the rain issue as well unfortunately.
What are you watering the Greenhouse plants with? Is it filtered rainwater or well water? I can't remember from last year.

Can't speak for Virginia but here we've had very cool temps 48 and 51F two mornings this week.

My theory is that the light in the greenhouse is slightly defused which the cukes and the peppers enjoy. It looked to me like the cukes in your garden had their stems sunburned. Too much direct sun early in the year when they are most tender? Lately, I grow mine on a cattle panel outside. Interesting about the rainwater. Get a sample and have it tested for chemicals at a lab. I'd like to know what they find.
I agree there are many factors about the greenhouse that the pepper and cukes enjoy. I always had good results outside until about 4 years ago.
A friend does the testing of the lake water and the results are more than disturbing.
what variety are the cuks? With the doors open is that enough for pollination?
They're the Muncher variety and I do hand pollinate.
My Lori and I have moved to hip height raised garden beds. It is a new thing for us.

Your garden over all looks so nice and your green house too. We are living with out a green house here right now as ours met its life. We are working on a new green house for the future so I am very envious of yours.

How do they get pollinated indoor
The doors are wide open but I also hand pollinate.
If today you were purchasing off grid appliances refrigerator and freezer. Would you purchase propane models or consider the new 12 or 24 volt models that are available? Powered either by solar and battery bank. We will have 1K gallon propane tank available. Should be easily filled once a year. Thank you,
Patrick. I would recommend the 12/24 volt COMPRESSOR FRIDGES, I've been using them for 6 years in my van camper, fulltime traveling. The compressor is the difference, it will take the temperature much lower while using very little battery power. The propane version uses no compressor, and will only go 30 or so degrees cooler than the ambient temperature. If you want consistent low temperatures definitely use a compressor type fridge !
Duane has good points there. Our propane freezer will run on electric too so it's good for either or. Presently we're running a small fridge/freezer combo on solar at both cabins with no issues.
JC, How are your inside cucumbers getting pollinated? Your video showed the doors open, so are the bees, etc, are coming inside, or is the wind cross pollinating the cukes? Also, what soil do you use in your floating seed trays, and seed cups? Thanks!
The doors are open and insects go inside but I hand pollinate as well. I haven't seen one single honey bee yet. I've tried lots of potting soils for my trays and even made my own, but my best results have come from the Miracle Grow brand. Don't buy it at walmart because it's made cheaper than what is sold at Home depot etc.

Is the rain really toxic? Have you had it tested? There are MANY reasons the cucumbers would do better in the greenhouse aside from rain.
The pine trees turned brown within 10 days time and the leaves on all the trees look sick and shriveled. All signs of acid rain.
Maybe take one of the large healthy greenhouse plants put it in a pot with the greenhouse dirt and move it outside when rain is coming to see what happens to it. Then you will know if it is rainwater killing them.
We did that with Lori's hanging flower pot. It was gorgeous. We hung it in the garden and after getting rained on only twice, it turned yellow and leaves started to curl and fall off.
@@thebossoftheswamp Well then that does sound like rainwater is the problem. Crazy what the government is trying to do in the name of GREEN but they get YELLOW.

Yes and that''s why I built it. The focus here is if you're having poor success with cukes, move them inside for maximum yield.

You did not mention how the plants in the green house are watered. How do the plants get the water they need? What is the source?

I was so thrilled with my garden this year and doing really well but my neighbor up the hill burns his plastic and trash. The smoke was coming right over to my property and it was drizzling. I was having a flash back of writing a paper on Acid Rain back in the 80's. I'm afraid to eat anything now and am so disheartened, what do I do, in addition to having the reluctant conversation with him.
The crap being sprayed is creating the worst acid rain we've ever had.
One word: Heat.
We've had the woodstove going a few days this month. It was 51degrees on Friday and 48 a few days before. If my greenhouse is as hot as you say I wouldn't be wearing a hoodie in there.
@@thebossoftheswamp I never mentioned a temperature, but I guarantee it was colder outside than inside. Do you think greenhouses exist to keep the rain off? In the old days, they were called 'hothouses.'

@@sarkybugger5009 Of course it heats up when the doors are closed but it's been wide open for a month or better and the air pisses right through it. Nice try with the sarcasm though :-) Those pepper plants that are 3' inside a wide open door aren't living in much of a different climate than the ones that are outside the door. Just sayin.

All they think about is lowering the earth's temp, not taking into consideration how hot it'll be when there's no trees left to shade it.
