I have 2002 escape had a hole in flex pipe. Replaced the flex pipe and now when the vehicle gets up around 40 to 50 mph the acceleration seems restricted. Could this mean the catalytic converter is dead?
That catalytic converter clogs because the upstream cats disintegrate. All the debris flows to the downstream cat and clogs it. After you replace the downstream cat you will still have a check engine light because the upstream cats are no longer working. Replacing them is much more expensive because they are part of the exhaust manifolds.
great video.. my tribute is having same symptoms...i need to test the preCATS and main CAT to see which i need to order. Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing your experience.
I have 03 Ford Escape 3.0l v6 with over 300,000 miles and they have 3 converters so I'm wondering which one you actually changed on yours and when looking to buy replacement for the 2 front one's how do I know for sure I'm ordering the 2 I actually need?? Loved your video, thank you!!
He replaced the rear converter. The 2 front ones are part of the manifolds essentially, and are very expensive. Hopefully it was just the rear on yours...
A friend of mine has a 2010 Escape with the 3.0L V6 in there. If her rear cat ever goes out, I'm just knocking out the honeycomb and putting it back. No O2 sensors on the rear cat, just 2 each on both forward cats. No reason to replace the rear one if it's the only one that goes.
Can you just remove everything from that catalytic converter all the way back to the exhaust tip and drive the car that way? Will the flex pipe just dangle everywhere or should you remove that to?
Thanks! I'm not a car guy, but my 2011 w/ the 3.0 v6 hybrid does look a little different between the catalytic and the muffler. Still, thanks for all the useful info!

I know this video was posted a while ago but looking for a response from poster or someone. I just got a used 05 Mazda Tribute with Cat issues. My car has the same symptoms, low RPMs etc etc hasn’t stalled or not started on me or anything yet. I’m gunna try and replace the 3rd Cat at home. I was wondering though if replaceing it with a straight pipe temporarily until I can afford the new Catalytic converter part is a dumb idea. I’d like to avoid spending big $ on it. We don’t have emissions testing here so I can get away with it that way. But by putting in a straight pipe, will my truck be super noisy then ? Or once I do that am I screw and can’t put in a new cat later ? @chad Williams
Hey Shelby! You can straight pipe it if you want. Won’t hurt a thing. At most, you may throw a check engine light for the secondary (downstream) O2 sensor. This would be a cheap easy way of doing it. I think I paid $80 for the catalytic converter when I purchased it. There might even be a link in the description. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

i have the same problem with my escape, i take out the same cat like you did and i was plug and i check the inside of it with a flashlight and the honeycomb looks complete what do you think about it? do i need to replace it or the first one
I would not, as you have 2 precats if you have the V6 like me. The precats are more than likely fine and are very expensive with lots of labor. The post cat usually goes first. If you want to be 100% sure, you will need to get an ODB2 device and connect it to your car and read the O2 sensors. Eric the Car Guy has a great video explaining how to test.
Chad Williams, hypothetical question?ihave same problem with same identical car.i cannot finance problem.could I hit the cat to loosen up the crud along with other cats for the meantime? I heard it could work a llitle
It could possibly work, but you may only see like a 25% better performance. I would take it off and gut it if you can’t afford to get it at the moment. That is a free option as well
Somebody may have already asked, but is there a reason that the engine light was still on after you replaced the catalytic converter? I’m just curious if it has to be reset with a computer before it will go off?
Yeah, I didn’t disconnect the battery after and I still had a small misfire (which caused the converter to fail). Fixed the misfire (coil pack) and then reset the codes, all was fixed.
Can you dump the upstream cats. (not replace) hollow out put something else.We have a 2002. still in good shape just bought brand new tires. rotor and of course brakes..
Bummer!!! Could you ask them if they can just do the one catalytic converters on the exhaust pipe (the 3rd one)? Then if that fixes it, great and it will save a lot of money. Then if you need to do the other 2, you know that you had to. Let me know if you have any questions!!!
I used my OBD2 scanner to read the voltage from each of the O2 sensors to determine which converter was bad. Eric the Car Guy has a great video on how to do that. I would recommend his video for this “how to”
Thank you. After checking your video and my Workshop Manual it looks like your vehicle and the Hybrid use virtually the same parts... where did you buy your catalytic converter and did it come with the necessary bolts and clamps?
Once again, thank you for your time. I don't know if you mentioned it in your video but I don't have any check engine lights or error codes. Did you? I'm having all the symptoms that you're having but not getting any indication from the onboard computer whats causing my issues. Really hoping its the cat...
I didn’t have any codes other than an intermittent misfire from one of the cylinders, which probably gave me the bad catalytic converter. Catalytic converter are known for going bad due to misfires.
Hey Chad did you notice when you went to turn on your AC that the car would have trouble gaining power twice as badly? I'm trying to narrow down between replacing the catalytic and the IAC(Idle air control) to solve my problem. Some feedback would be appreciated! Thank you
Hey Cole, so when you turn on the AC, you are turning on the compressor which will naturally take power away from the engine due to that parasitic drain. With that said, I would pay close attention to how the car is running without the AC on. If you are getting poor fuel milage and feels slugish, then the catalytic convertor could be going bad. If you have a scanner, you can verify that by watching the O2 sensors. I hope this helps!
@@ChadWilliamsFixesAll and I've also recently gotten some emission lights so that could definitely tie in with the cat/o2 sensors correct? I may be wrong sorry

Hopefully not the transmission I don't have any diagnostic tools or devices for ruling out the CAT but pretty much sure could be it at fault. WILL APPRECIATE YOUR OPINION.
Can you explain how you tested the O2 sensors to see if the front two cats were bad? I found what I think was the Ericthecarguy video you were referencing in the beginning of your video, but he doesn't really explain it. I have a multimeter to test, but what am I looking for? Thank you, your video has been very helpful already.
So, I used my ODB2 reader and looked at the pids. With the engine fully warmed up, you need to rev the engine up to 2000 rpms. The first O2 sensor (pre cat) needs to be sporadic, the second one (post cat) should be around a half a volt. Just to make sure you watched the same video I did, here is the link. th-cam.com/video/9VZ5K8n5jj0/w-d-xo.html

Hey Chad great video, I'm about to replace the converter on my girlfriends car. Do all ford escapes have a rpm limiter? Also does a clogged converter lead to EGR valves blowing? Thanks for the help!
+Michael Lavelle I would bet that all of the Ford Escapes have rev limiter, yes. Also, that absolutely could be causing your EGR valve blowing. I appreciate you watching!!! Good luck!!
Did you at fitst think it was your EGR valve, mine was bad and blew a whole though the side of it. I replaced it and still have not power,. Thinking line plugged or catalac converter is bad.
Chad - Thanks for the informative video and details. My question regards the clamp you show towards the back of the system where the male pipe inserts into the female. My exhaust pipes are fine but that clamp got loose and is still intact but is loose and just dangling around the pipes and sliding back and forth making lots of clanking noises. Is that clamp really necessary - can I purchase it separately? I assume it functions to keep the pipes together but just checking as the pipes seem so solid already. Thanks
Hi! First, thanks for watching! :) so, that clamp probably isn’t too necessary for you at the moment. Is say that because rust and corrosion probably fused together over the years. If you do want to replace the clamp, you can get a new clamp from any automotive store like Autozone. Just make sure it is for the same size pipe. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have anymore questions
I have a 2006 with same problem have gotten plugs changed ,2 coil packs and no change am being told now that is the 2 manifolds at 1050.00 dollars to fix.I had know problems with my escape till took to have power steering and brakes fixed and picked up and it was real sluggish and bogging down returned it to mechanic and now after them saying it was spark plugs Rowling out still same ....now 2 manifolds stopped up....please help
When I say 2 manifolds that is what he said both need to be replaced.....feel that should try catalytic convert first? The mechanic said there was not one on the escape 2006 cause I mentioned boarding holes into it and he said could not because this one didn't have a catalytic converter,,,,,huh and that seems weird to not change out catalytic converter if replacing both manifolds
yes my 04 explorer have dropped in performance drastically, it has a ugly idle, its so bad that it would just shutdown after 5 minutes on idle, and the exhaust stinks of rotten eggs. ive changed my 02 sensors and it worked good for a while and then it went right back to the exact same issue again
Allan chopper you probably already figured it out but a silver smell/rotten eggs is a very common sign of a catalytic converter plugged could also be a bad map sensor but useally you'll smell it when you step on it going down a free way
i have had a CEL on for many years on my 02 escape with 3.0 about 11 codes usually pop up mostly due to vacuum leaks but it runs strong and gets better mpg than its rated for so i dont bother with it
You shouldn't be testing your car with a closed garage. Your neighbors can be annoyed for a couple minutes so you don't get carbon monoxide in your house.

Got a 2010 2.5l 4 cylinder just started having a problems with mine about a week ago I just replaced the throttle body, spark plugs, coil packs, evap canister and I'm thinking just gutting it and welding it up cause cheapest cat on rockauto is 170 and the pick apart aint any better smhh
can you send me a link where you ordered your catalytic converter from?? I'm a girl and doing this on my own...my trucks doing the same thing and identical to yours down to the color...t.i.a.
Wt was cost for it?
You need all three new cats replaced.
Forget the neighbors, be safe. Open the garage door back up after testing?
So fast forward to Sept 2020. My question is this; is this cat still flowing well for you? (Assuming you still have the car)
I cut off cadlickconverter n still won't rev up
How high can you get it to rev up to? I do know there is a 4000 RPM limiter on these Escapes
You should post the Check Engine OBD 2 Code.
I totally would, but this car is long gone from my ownership :( sorry about that
dude did your vehicle smell like rotten eggs coming from the exhaust??
Hey! So no, I didn’t have an exhaust leak at all. Please be careful, that exhaust smell can be deadly if that is what you are smelling.
yes my 04 explorer have dropped in performance drastically, it has a ugly idle, its so bad that it would just shutdown after 5 minutes on idle, and the exhaust stinks of rotten eggs. ive changed my 02 sensors and it worked good for a while and then it went right back to the exact same issue again
Allan chopper you probably already figured it out but a silver smell/rotten eggs is a very common sign of a catalytic converter plugged could also be a bad map sensor but useally you'll smell it when you step on it going down a free way
Well goto muffler shop and just get str8 pipe put in ..in BC we don't have air care so we don't need cat. Any more .. $50 re and re or do it your self
That is awesome man! Glad you got yours done!
Local muffler shop here has a sign up that reads,”We do not remove catalytic converters, so don’t ask!”
the check engine light is still on
Wow! Only $80 for a catalytic converter?
... nice.
your check engine lights on bro I think you need to figure that out first😆
i have had a CEL on for many years on my 02 escape with 3.0 about 11 codes usually pop up mostly due to vacuum leaks but it runs strong and gets better mpg than its rated for so i dont bother with it
Just put s hole in it to make it go past 30
You shouldn't be testing your car with a closed garage. Your neighbors can be annoyed for a couple minutes so you don't get carbon monoxide in your house.
Take it off and straight pipe it
