I've listened to this cover a ton but I didn't notice until tonight that she says "waiting on your brother" (rather than 'waiting for') -- I lived in Kentucky for a long time which isn't that far (linguistically or geographically) from Tennessee and 'waiting on' is such a normal construction around there -- but not (depending on where you are) as much where I lived before or after. It made me smile -- it's such a little normal 'understanding the meaning more instinctively than the individual words' swap, but I had a "oh hey me too" moment about it.

the song sounds very different and is very different to her version, she really changed it and made it her own and didn't just carbon-copy his work. Though, there were some mistakes in this live version, her tripping up and mixing up lyrics at the start; but afterwords she picked back up the quality and played really well. Elliott said that he didn't ever want to make the same type of album twice, He really liked trying new slightly different thing from album to album, He'd be happy with this version of Ballad of big nothing; where she really took it and made it something new.
While I think it's a good cover, I feel like Elliott wouldn't have really liked it because from what I read about him, he didn't really like the simplification of the type of music he studied and tried to replicate. From what I remembered, a lot of his influences stemmed from poets like Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot who were big into the idea of complex art trying to capture the complexity of life which Elliott did with his own songwriting, emphasizing constant change in chord progression and lyrical dynamic. I feel like Elliott would have been more keen on a cover that tried to capture a more different sound completely rather than just change a few notes, if even liked a cover at all. Just listen to a bunch of covers from Elliott himself, and notice how they were mostly upbeat songs changed to complete melancholy chords and scales. Genius on his part I'd say.
Her version sounds like every other modern female bedroom pop artist right down to the over-affected vocals and lazy guitar playing. Nothing original about this whatsoever.

The worst thing she does here is make the song melodically more basic than it actually is. She plays altogether different chords, omits all the augmentations, and perpetuates the idea that his songs were "simple" (how many times have we read that about his songs? the idea that because the arrangements/production are kind of sparse, and that he often accompanied himself on acoustic, it means that his music was simple). To do him justice, one would have to at least learn the song and play it on his level, not do a beginner-guitarist style approximation.
