FoxOM89 This creeped the sh**t out of me watching this!!!! I moved into a house instead of an apartment and I’m soooo thankful for this video!!! 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
I finally won a fight to keep the blinds this way with my wife tonight, thanks to your video. And what's funny, is that she found the video in hopes of proving me wrong! THANKS JOE!!
@28SNaKeS me too!!! We finally won this! My current girlfriend found this video as well. I was baffled that she could think that people couldn't see us in the bathroom. But now she understands. Joe truly knows!
@@theeverythingday1984 I still remember that night, it was a nice little win for me hahahha The video still made me laugh, it was exactly how I was trying to explain to her myself. We are no longer together, though, and I wonder what my current girlfriend’s view on blinds is lol PS I wonder if I should blame Joe for the divorce HAHAHA
Just to clarify.. So if you're on the first floor .. blinds should be pointing up.. If you're on the second floor or higher.. blinds should point down Right?
Yes I would say you're right. You can also go downstairs when it's dark outside & have your lights on off course then look up & if you see anything then tilt the other way...just to make sure.
Even if this video has been stretched out for an unneccesary amount of time, I still watched it from start to end without skipping forward. You got something special, man.
Glad to hear you watched the whole video. You get a gold star for sure! Hey do you have a roku tv? I have a roku tv channel called DIY for Beginners so you can watch me on the big screen too!
***** Ha! Sorry for not getting to the point sooner. I'll keep that in mind when I make my next video! Tilt the blinds one way & when it's dark outside & with your miniblinds tilted, walk outside & look back up to see what you see. Try that & you will soon figure out if someone can see you get into shower!...lol
I was never sure how to tilt my blinds and you have NOT spent too many minutes explaining why they should be tilted in such a matter. I appreciate all of your thoroughly detailed information and keep up the good work.
You're welcome...?!! At least now you know what you are up against & the nice view people have when you don't have your blinds tilted the right way at night....ok then.
Thank you for this! My fiance and I are constantly arguing about this. My way for living on the first floor was correct. If he tries to change them back I'm going to show him this video. 😁
Haha....hey all you have to do is turn your lights on after dark then go outside to see if you can see in & if you can then turn the blinds the other way.....
Just remember to tilt the blinds & at night, with your lights on, go outside & look in from the street, & make sure you have them tilted the proper direction. Thanks for commenting! Joe :0
Well it's their fault for not tilting their miniblinds the correct way so I would think the fault is their own....wouldn't you say? I guess they didn't watch my video!!
I have been testing my blinds settings by looking at people in the eyes and see if they look back, got a few stares on first try so i thought hmm i need more information, so thx for this vid Joe!
Yes you're welcome. Especially when you have the lights on at night & they can see you but you can't see them if you have the blinds tilted the wrong way. Now you know...!
Thank you for this video man it taught me a lot I never knew this at all I always thought it was a good idea to always have my blinds up now I understand and thank you for caring and showing us, wish there was more teachers like you because you would make life easier and now I can pass this info to anyone know, appreciate the video and who cares how long the video was I watched every second of it brother, have a blessed day
Awesome! So glad you watched the entire thing & you learned something new! I have lots of other DIY videos on my channel that I think you would appreciate to learn how to save money around the house. Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists & scroll down to see all the ways you could save your hard earned money. Try it & thanks again for your message. I read the entire thing!
Thank you IMMENSELY for this video!!!! I do NOT think it’s too long. You’re showing each way and explaining why it needs to be that way. Well done!!!! 🏆🏅👍🏼👏🏼
A blind installer told me this for the day time. If you are wanting to keep the heat out in the summer then turn the slats down because heat rises up and off the hot window glass. The light still comes through somewhat but light is not hot. In the winter the cold falls down and so keep the slats turned up so the cold cannot fall down through the slats.
Gerry Gray Ha! It's amazing a blind guy told you this..! I could see his advice working for you in the day light hours but not necessarily at night for the visual effects! Thanks for your message.
I have an issue, bedroom 2nd floor, if I turn them down towards me, my neighbours across the road get full view in to my room... If I turn them down so I can see outside who's knocking the door, my neighbours can't see but whoever is knocking the door can see me. I think I prefer crochet nets?
Yes I guess the net will work for you. But like I was saying if at night you turn the lights on then go outside to see if you can see in & if so then tilt the blinds the other way then go back outside to see what you can see....as a thought for you.
Thank you for this. Recently I was hang out in my room, which is on the 2nd floor, at night and I heard someone say "i see you" from outside. I realized my blinds were turned wrong way. So thank you!!
what about the second floor apart from the street with white inexpensive accordian miniblinds? Plastic in summer - i find heat is reduced look up rather than round facing out. What is better to avoid this?
I would say round facing in...that should be the way so you can't see down too because if you can see them then they can see you, especially at night when you have your lights on.
I had no idea, but thanks to you I do now! I've been using mini blinds for 8 months now, and I am in a town house surrounded by other town homes and now I'm convinced my neighbours have been seeing everything! Lessoned learned too late! SMH
Sorry this video was made many many years ago but I can tell you when it gets dark, turn your lights on & then walk down to the ground floor & look back up & see what you can see. If you can see in then tilt the blinds the other way. Thanks for stopping by!
So what do you do if you're on the fifth floor and there's a wooded Hill Street links away? Assuming people can walk trails on the hill and sit down on a rock right in line with your window and see you what would you say then? Estimating there about the width of the street and a half away from you.
Walk fast?!! Maybe you should think about a different type of blind system that's not miniblinds. They have lots to choose from but of course they will be more expensive than the cheap miniblinds but what is your sanity worth? Only you know the answer to that!
My window is a rather small window about five feet from the ground. I live on the second floor but there are apartments across the way at the same level and a level higher. Which way should I tilt them!? My thought was that if I tilt my blinds up, people on the ground level would only be able to see my ceiling.
+smilingjaguar If you tilt your blinds up then go out side after dark, hen you have your lights on & just imagine what all someone can see. I think you will be surprised to know they will be seeing more than your ceiling! Check it out.
Thank you sir. One day i hope people will observe your greatness. your are an inspiration. now that I know how to do this, you have helped change the world.
Haha I'm sure I changed your world....just a bit,,,?!! I can change it more if you let me. Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists & see all the ways I have for you to save your money around the house. YOU can do it! Take care of yourself...
My problem is I'm on the third floor, and there's an six-floor apartment next door. I tend to angle my blinds partway facing up, so I can still get some light in. I've tried standing on the sidewalk and I can only see my ceiling light, so I think I'm okay from below. I'm curious though if someone on the fourth floor across the alley can see into my room. I can see them, so I'm not sure if it's a case of I see them, so they see me.
+lowerstreet Yes if you can see them then that means they can see you, if they choose to check you out! You are in a quandary since you are caught with people looking up into your room & down into your room since you are on a third floor.... Check out a few angles & see what you see up above you & down below & do what you think. Thanks for your message! Joe :0
Hmmmmm good question. I would think just twizzle them one way then the other & whichever way seems to close the tightest then that's what I would do. If you can see them then they can see you. I hate those long vertical blinds too as they always seem to click out of proper position too. If all your blind slats don't close tight then that means the top little clicker is not positioned right & then you need to get up there & hold on to it tight & try to click it one way or the other & it should click to reposition any slats that are not inline. If it doesn't click & just spins then it means it's broken & that vertical blind will just be what it is. That's why I dislike these types of blinds but not sure what else you could do there which doesn't cost an arm & a leg. since you sound like the energetic type then I have lots of DIY videos you might appreciate to save money! Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down & have at it. Have your favorite cup of "joe" on the ready as you will need it!
OK that is common sense, If you can see out or see light, they can see in. I want to know which is the best angle in the winter?. Does convection matter?
I would think either summer or winter you would want it so people down on the ground cannot look up & see you after dark when your lights are on. That's what I am referring to.
What If your in an apartment and there is three apartments connected by a patio and you're on the second floor? If they are down the people on the patio can look at you while you're living life naked but across the street that won't. Then should I make them open up or closed down?
Hmmmm turn your lights on & at night walk down & look back up into your place? If you can see everything then I would turn the blinds the other way. That should work for other units close to you as you have described. The only other way is to pay the piper & remove miniblinds & install a different blind.
Thanks Joe, Great vid. I have a great question. You know the vertical rows of holes where the support string runs vertically through each slat? If it's dark outside, and lights are on inside behind the blinds, can people from a distance see anything through the vertical rows of holes.....I often wonder, maybe some kind of pinhole/aperture effect?
+poppypottschannel Ha! Actually all I was wanting to do is to bring it to the attention of my viewers. I have more important things to do with my time rather than looking through the blinds!....lol I spend my extra time making more howto videos for You! Joe :0
How about neighbors from across at the same floor level? And how about when it's at night, does it make any difference when lights are on and it's dark outside?
Yes of course it makes a difference at night when you have your lights on since they can see everything! During the day if you can see them down there then they can see you....especially at night. Twizzle the other way....
Thanks. On the second floor and had to hop up and turn my blinds the right way lol. I’ve been in my apt for 6 years so I hate to know how many times I’ve been exposed lol.
but which way is best for privacy against buildings that are directly across from you? i'm not worried about angles in my case, but rather an apartment that's directly across from me.
I would say facing down, however if the other apartment is directly across, I would think you could do it the other way as well. Should not make much difference, depending on how tight you have the mini blinds closed. Keep an eye on the neighbor across the way & take note if you can see through his blinds to see if you can tell which way he twizzles them. Joe :0
@relzric The back side edge of your blinds, need to be facing up at night, if on the 2nd floor. If you don't, and your lights are on at night, you might as well not have any blinds at all. Go outside at night & see what I mean. Thanks for your comments. Joe :0
Someone tell me what do I do in a mobile home then? Cuz then the neighbors across would be able to kinda see, but then ppl walking down below... Idk I'm confused & been trying to figure this out for too long lol ... (I dont have drapes for all my windows yet, but i plan on getting some for sure cuz I like my privacy and it's also good for a/c & heat...).
If you have miniblinds then at night turn your lights on then walk outside to see if you can see in & if you can then tilt the blinds the other way.....
Him mentioning that if you can see out, they can see in, is the best reminder. So I have been doing my horizontal blinds correctly, but not my vertical ones (tested by looking out... obviously for horizontal onw side or the other will be easier to see in, so you'd just position it based on where they are compared to the part of room you want to block from view).
Joe which way would apply to someone who lives in a mobile home that is 3 to 4 feet off the ground and then the windows are another 2- 2 1/2 feet up? Since your video was done showing french doors I was wondering when does the ground level start to make a difference between the two?
Well here's what I would like for you to do. Next time it is dark outside I want you to turn your lights on in the house then go outside & see if you can look in. If you can then tilt the blinds the other way.....Thanks for stopping by!
Dear Joe I am from Pakistan and that video is really very helpful as a house is constructed right behind my house and the guys sneak inside my house so not I am installing the blinds which are the modesty protectors in various ways. Thanks again.
Im on the 5th floor but two units are on my left and right just 7 feet away. Imagin the letter U and my unit is the bottom of the letter U and the other two units are to my left and right. Do i have the blinds up or down so they don't see into my living room.
Look out & tilt the blinds so you can't see the ground outside & I think that's the way you would want them I'm thinking for your purpose...Of course this would now mean that anyone down on the ground could look right up into your room at night when you have the lights on....see what I mean? If you are really concerned about all of this then you might want to think about getting different type of blinds...
@@VideoJoeKnows thanks for responding. The ground floor isn't the street though. It's a ground level only parking. Units below me will only be able to see my ceiling. The units to my right and left are so close it's very uncomfortable that they mightve been able to see inside my until perfectly for the first three weeks I was here with my gf. I think I got it now tho. It was very hard to find a video that I was able to personally understand. Blinds up for night time. No one can see inside at my level. Thankfully I had them correct these past few months.
Hmmm not sure but I would want to flip the miniblinds for night no matter what so no one can see from street level up there at night. I would think that would be the main thing for sure....
Is it possible to correct wooden blinds where the blinds are not closing enough. I have about 1/4 in space near the top and as you go down the gap widens?
@saucee28 The people across from you would see you to a certain extent, depending on how far closed you have your blinds tilted down. At night, I would suggest you tilt them down all the way to the closed position then your neighbors across from you, won't be able to see in. Try to remember to do that & after 21 days, it will then become a habit. Thanks for your question. Joe :0
This has been helpful. We are having trouble making the blinds go & down. They're Levelor. We got them on but we can't them to go down. There are several strings on the right, but when we tug on them it looks like they are going to come apart.
I live in the 2nd floor and have had the slates twizzled up inward for the longest time. It seemed to block the sun more during those afternoon hours, but one night I was taking out the trash and looked straight up into the apartment: I could see everything! A nightmare! All those things I've been doing! Visible to all! Now I have them twizzled down inward but the sun is a bit obnoxious. Guess I'll have to invest in some blockout blinds. :(
Thanks for watching this video & finally having the light bulb pop on in your head!....LOL I guess what you could do is have twizzled up for the morning sun, since no one should see much at that time...then you would have to remember to twizzle the opposite direction after you turn your lights on in the evening. Remember that when you look down & see everything from where you're at, others on the ground floor can see YOU too. You could also twizzle the blinds straight for the morning sun. You might still get some in but try it anyway. Would hate for you to have to spend money on blackout window film. even window film can be seen through at night when you have your lights on, depending on what type of film you purchase or have installed. Thanks for your comments! Joe :0
YAY For you !! I have always fought with my family about the way to turn the blinds UP , we lived on a single bottom floor home.... LOL Now I live in a 2 story home and see my way was sooo wrong for a the 2nd floor! ..I've Been here a yr now and left my light on in my bedroom the other night and when I left the house OMG I could see all in my bedroom !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOLY COW LOL....Warm Hugs from NC
Amazing huh! Here all this time you thought you were safely secured in your room at night. Glad you got a chance to watch this video. Thanks for your comments! Joe :0
I wish this were true. But it depends on the manufacturer. Some blinds are made to close more tightly in only one direction. My wooden slat blinds must be closed how the it shows on the instructions for a complete almost vertical close.
All you have to do is close the blinds all the way! he left them opened just a little. You could so easily go out and look through your window to see if you can see in..! The blinds are designed to close both ways for different reasons. When you are sitting right in front of the window and the sun light is on you just turn the blinds up a little this will block out the sun and still let the light in. Some blinds are designed with a pattern when you close them up you can't see the pattern. Have a nice day everyone.
Next time you're at home, after dark, take a walk around your complex & see if you can't see any of your neighbors, in their town home(s). If you can see them, then they can (or use to) see you! I hate it when I'm inside & it's dark outside, that anyone can see me yet I can't see them. You magnify it at night since your lights are on....a true peep show for the unsuspecting! Depending how you have your blinds tilted...if you can see "them"..."they" can see you. Thanks for commenting! Joe :0
Ha! If creeper is on the 3rd floor then you should tilt the inside of the blinds in the upward direction. The only issue with that is now people on the ground floor can look straight up into your place. You could shut them as tight as you can & don't just tilt them. That will be about the best you can do unless you want to put a 3 panel screen in front of whatever window you don't want him to look in to. Thanks for commenting. Joe :0
@WannaBeDj100 You are so welcome. Hopefully you can get the fam to take note!...lol. You also make a good point....if you do want to pull the blinds up, twizzle them open first before pulling up. They pull up all the way instead of bunching up to where you can't pull up all the way. I like to not pull them up at all, & just twizzle them open, for the wear & tear factor not to mention the hanging cord issue. Thanks again for your comments. Keep watching "joe"... :0
I have retired and very nosy neighbors to one side of my home. I have seen them watch me from either their first or second story windows. I had my blinds the wrong way for years until I saw this video and changed how I now close them at night. I noticed that having a lamp in front of one of my properly closed blinds at night even helps improve the situation. My question now resides with setting blinds during the day. Does it matter - I mean, can they still see what's going on inside? I assume the light reflected from the sun is blocking seeing inside. I can't see anything inside during the day unless I'm standing right in front of the window and peering right in.
Yes during the day, it's difficult to see clearly what you are doing inside your place. I would tilt them slightly down though, but it shouldn't really make too much difference during the day. Glad you are now realizing to not keep your lamp too close to the blinds at night with the blinds tilted the wrong way!....LOL Joe :0
Yes probably then if you end up deciding it's the other way then make sure you tilt them the way you want back at night since you don't want people walking around looking up & seeing you.....I would just leave that way all the time in case I forgot!
I have a habit to leave my kitchen window totally open, I have those white lacy nice curtains, and like cooking and see what's outside during the day and night. People sees that I spend a lot time in the kitchen on the counter of the sink. My apt is on the ground, and there is pathway where the neighbors come and go to their apts either on the ground on 2nd floor that faces my window. During the day, they can't see me even if the light is on in my kitchen, but at night, they see. Does this blind will help, but I still want to see what's outside. Again the neighbors window and doors are across my window and door facing to each other, if they leave their window open at night, I see from my kitchen inside or if I am outside.
4-10-14 Hi Joe, my concern is HEAT.....we just installed Mini Blinds on our Porch which is very hot to begin with (it is an enclosed porch with windows).....My husband put the blinds with the slats down (single family home, one floor).....but I think not only does it look stupid, it feels hotter.....is there a way to cool a room vs making a room hotter? djtnt1991@att.net Teresa
I guess you could try turning th blinds up & see what happens with that way. You might need to experiment to see which way would prevent the most heat from entering the room. Here's another idea for you.....how many windows do you have on this enclose porch? Have you ever considered installing window film to the windows? There are several types of window film which could help you keep your warm cooler as it will reflect lots of the suns rays away from the interior of the room. Talk to a window film specialist & have someone come to your home with some samples. He can look at your windows & make some suggestions for you, that will ultimately help you with your issue. is there a way to vent some of the hot air out through the roof? Most built in porches don't have a feature like this but it might be something to look into &/or installing an ac register out there. That could get costly & it may run all the time since the room is probably hotter than the rest of the house so that probably will not be an option for you...especially if the roof is not insulated panels. Here's another thought. What is on top of the roof? Is it hot mop or something to where you can apply a white coating that you can install with a paint roller that will reflect the sun/heat? Several things to think about. Joe :0
Good question. You will have to play around with your blinds in order to determine that one. It depends on how tight your particular miniblinds close tilted up &/or also tilted down. Try that & you will soon find out which way is best for you. Joe :0
Thanks, I just moved into apartment on 3rd fl. with 2 story house across the way. Since my apartment is a little higher I “twizzled” up. Neighbors are far enough that they can’t see in and I get light and look at the trees when I’m riding my stationary bike. Don’t wanna let the neighbors see me sweat haha! 🙏🏽😊
Yes! twizzle up should be the right way. Here's the other thing...if you twizzle the wrong way & if you can see them...then they can see you at night when you have your lights on. Sweat on!
what if you live in an apartment building on the middle floor and next to you is another apartment building? then you have neighbors above and below??? i guess just get curtains.. Not going to lie this has been bothering me for 20 years at least. I always felt exposed using blinds
My thoughts would be to then remove your miniblinds & get something else a different type of window shade that would work for your instance. They have lots of different ones now days to choose from other than miniblind type. Yes this would cost you some money then also you would have to remove the old ones & install the new ones to save money but if you have the money then you could have someone from a blind company come out & give you the options & the pricing & they will also remove & install so that is a thought for you too. thanks for your message!
Joe, you are freaking fantastic. I'll watch your videos for personality alone. Also, I've been twizzling the wrong way for a week in my new place. Thanks for saving my dignity.
Ha! Always a pleasure helping a damsel in distress! & another Ha! goes here since you like my videos for the personality alone....thanks! I have soo many more videos on my channel I dare say you will have a field day watching all of them in one go! Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to see all the ways you could be saving money around the house. I also have some inspirational reading videos on my channel too in the playlists area & I think you will like some of them. Check that area out too...ok? Thanks for stopping by 2 years ago!
To pull your blinds down, make sure the cords are not tangled. Do not pull straight down or the blinds will not unclick to come down. You need to pull the strings out at a 45 degree angle or so, THEN pull down & this should unclick the blinds to then let them go back down. Try it & let me know if they work. If they don't, you could have something going wrong in the top track. If they are new, they should work. Joe :0
Boy. 75 people are peeping Tom! Joe, thank you so much for this great and informative video. It's really helpful as I just moved into a second floor condo with all windows installed with mini-blinds. Good find to me!
I always twizzled up because it lets in less light. Another thing about the second floor blinds twizzled down is at night there is not as much light coming in. The street lights might make enough on the floor to find your way to the bathroom.
Thanks! All I can say is tilt them the way you think then when it's dark, go outside & look up (when lights are on) at your place & you will know once & for all. It's amazing to me how many people don't know this...!
Was here for different video. Man is exactly right. Been doing this for years. I use light blocking curtains as well on first floor. Nothing more annoying than sunset ray beam on a TV.
+Rea84 Ha! Once you decide which way you think you need to do it then turn your lights on at night & walk outside to see if you can see in. If you can then twizzle the blinds the other way & walk outside again & take another look see. Thanks for your message! Joe :0
I’m sorry joe but I can not see which way is which. I don’t know if it’s the lighting or what but…Maybe leave a clear picture of the right and wrong way would be helpful.
Here's a tip for you then.....when it's dark, turn on your bedroom lights & remember which way you have your blinds tilted, then walk outside & see if you can see in. If you can see in then go back in & tilt the blinds the very opposite then walk back outside & check again....remember you need to do this when it's dark outside & have the lights on inside. An eye opener for sure if in fact your blinds are tilted the wrong way......
@hotdrumchick I'm pleasantly surprised that you were doing it correct all along as most of the blinds I see, on a second floor, are twizzled the other "incorrect" way. You are good. Thanks for taking time out to send me your comments. Joe :0
This being 6 minutes is like when I used to write about the cover picture of a book for 2 pages while in school because I didn't actually read the book but had to write a 2 page paper on it lol. But I got what I needed so thanks
I would hate to tell you which way to twist it in case your blinds work different than mine. Check out the video again & see which direction the actual slats are tilted. Hope it will then make more sense to you. Look at your slats & imagine what I am saying & look at your slats as though you were outside looking in. If you want, you can tilt them one direction then walk outside & see what I mean...especially at night. Joe :0
10 years later and this is still so helpful at first I was like "oh a video that's going to tell pull the string or turn the stick to close or open the blinds" even tho I was looking for well what he answered 🤣😂
More importantly I was worried if he was just going to talk about the first floor and not the second floor (which was the information I need) thank you so much for this
Thanks for watching the whole video so you got the info you needed. I have more videos to help you more around the house...? Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to find them!
Before watching this video, I figured it out. When I moved into my apartment, I made sure and checked the blinds so that nobody could see into the apartment. I stood on the outside and tried to see what others might have been able to see, and then, I turned the blinds up since I'm on the 1st/only floor.
Agree 100% with you on every point. You just won me a long-standing argument with my wife. Sadly, this means I shall be able to experience not being able to look in the gaps on a ground floor window by standing at the top of a ladder in the garden, as that is where I have been banished to...... Any chance of a prolonged, slightly scary diatribe on the correct way to load a dishwasher? I could go 2-0 up.
Haha I have just the video for you re loading a dishwasher improperly! Go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists & scroll down to dishwasher. It's a video not sure what the exact title is but having something to do with a leaking dishwasher & this particular explains how NOT to load a dishwasher so it won't leak. Watch it & be 2 & O!!
Good question! Keep those vertical blinds closed nice & tight at night since people can still see what you are doing when your lights are on & it's dark outside.
Question: If the blinds are twizzled facing up, can the cool air of the A/C fall into the blinds and escape through the window? Contrariwise, if the blinds are twizzled facing down, will the cool air just cascade down towards the floor keeping the home cooler? And obviously, all of this would be vice-versa for heating (since heat rises).
Never really thought about the air stuff....only how to protect your security when you are on a 2nd floor with lights on at night so no one could see you from looking in.....
thanks Joe, you just ended an ongoing argument between us...and I have to say I was wrong!...And so was my man... I had the blinds the downstairs way you showed in every room in the house, and he thought it should be the upstairs way in every room. Thanks to you, now we don't think we have privacy, we KNOW it! twizzle up for downstairs and twizzle down upstairs :)
At night though you don't want people to look up & in your room when your lights are on. During the day you can then tilt the blinds however you want....
I would still say to tilt the blind slats facing "up" from the inside. If you face them down & have the lights on at night all you're doing is giving people down below the show of their life! Don't do it, ahem. See what I mean? Here's a test....tilt the blinds facing down & leave your lights on then go down &look up from outside & have your friend walking around. You will see everything...especially if the blinds aren't tilted "tight" which most people don't. But then have your friend up in the room at night while you're down outside then call them on their cell phone & tell them to tilt the blinds the other way & see what happens. Presto!
Well thanks for stopping by! I have more learning videos on my channel. Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to see all the ways you could be saving your money around the house. Try it!
What if you're on the second floor and have a four-foot walkway in front of your window? Lol, that's my dilemma. Have the first floor see in or have the second floor see in.
Hmmmm you might want to consider getting rid of your miniblinds & getting a different style of window shades. They have lots to choose from now days. Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you so much. I am one of those people who always have the blinds turned the wrong way. Never thought to look in my 2nd floor bedroom window at night in the last 7 years. Ummm yeah!!! Thanks again for how to work your blinds for dummy's video.
My neighbors have been watching me walk around naked all this time.
Same. I just moved into a city
FoxOM89 This creeped the sh**t out of me watching this!!!! I moved into a house instead of an apartment and I’m soooo thankful for this video!!! 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
Lmfao same
Lol it’s my first week in to the second floor and lucky I decided to do some research
Good.
I finally won a fight to keep the blinds this way with my wife tonight, thanks to your video.
And what's funny, is that she found the video in hopes of proving me wrong!
THANKS JOE!!
@Frank Rizzo cover is now blown. Rut roh.
Sounds like the modern marriage 😅🤣
@28SNaKeS me too!!! We finally won this! My current girlfriend found this video as well. I was baffled that she could think that people couldn't see us in the bathroom. But now she understands. Joe truly knows!
@@theeverythingday1984
I still remember that night, it was a nice little win for me hahahha
The video still made me laugh, it was exactly how I was trying to explain to her myself.
We are no longer together, though, and I wonder what my current girlfriend’s view on blinds is lol
PS
I wonder if I should blame Joe for the divorce HAHAHA
Ha! Thank wifey for me!
Just to clarify..
So if you're on the first floor .. blinds should be pointing up..
If you're on the second floor or higher.. blinds should point down
Right?
Dee Murray yes from the point of view of being on the inside of the window
What is "up" and what is "down"? Am I the only one this stupid
@@joedude967 Down is when the smooth sides face's to the inside of the home, up is when the non smooth side faces insider the home
I’m in the 2nd floor & I’ve been pointing ☝️ cause I thought it would be better than face down 😖
Yes I would say you're right.
@@VideoJoeKnows aaaaaa, my household doesn’t use television anymore. Sorry, brother.
I don't think this needed to be a 6 minute video
Hey you spoke your mind at the time & that's just what came out. No problemo. It gave me a chance to respond to you.... Joe :0
I'll take as many minutes with Joe that I can get
VideoJoeKnows very make response! Most people can't take criticism.
I was never sure how to tilt my blinds and you have NOT spent too many minutes explaining why they should be tilted in such a matter. I appreciate all of your thoroughly detailed information and keep up the good work.
Welp, thanks to this guy, I’ll now forever be anxious about people standing on chairs, watching me through the windows.
You're welcome...?!! At least now you know what you are up against & the nice view people have when you don't have your blinds tilted the right way at night....ok then.
Great job and I appreciate you taking your time and being thorough. Timing is excellent! Thank you.
Glad this video will assist you for sure. Thanks for stopping by!
Joe :0
You're absolutely right, I can never see inside my neighbor's homes because they always turn the blind facing up, it's annoying.
That's illegal to see where people expect privacy like in their homes.
@@Life_42 I think he was joking
lol this is funny
LMAO!!
Well it's their fault for not tilting their miniblinds the correct way so I would think the fault is their own....wouldn't you say? I guess they didn't watch my video!!
This is so simple but it’s been driving me crazy, thanks man😆
Same thought bro
Awesome! Thanks for letting me know. That's why I thought I should make this video because there are lots of people who didn't think to check this!
I’ll never be able to look at blinds the same after today😂 Thanks for the great lesson
Haha I knew it!
Didnt answer my question. So if its summer and super hot, which side is better for heat control?
up keeps heat out, down lets heat in. - WW
I would be more concerned about people seeing up into my place at night with my lights on rather than which way prevents the heat from coming in...

So glad to see your comment...such a nice one. Now I can rest easy tonight! Just made my day.....
Go outside at night, with the lights on, & make your best determination which way they should live. Joe :0
Ha when they said "I see you" did it freak you out?" Hope you were dressed. Thanks for stopping by. Now you know!
what about the second floor apart from the street with white inexpensive accordian miniblinds? Plastic in summer - i find heat is reduced look up rather than round facing out. What is better to avoid this?
I would say round facing in...that should be the way so you can't see down too because if you can see them then they can see you, especially at night when you have your lights on.
Thank you...Just now been struggling to close it at the office for like 30 minutes OMG...Thank you you a life saver
Awesome to hear!!
I had no idea, but thanks to you I do now! I've been using mini blinds for 8 months now, and I am in a town house surrounded by other town homes and now I'm convinced my neighbours have been seeing everything! Lessoned learned too late! SMH
Can you do another video from the outside day amd night to show the visibility in various positions please?

Carrie Lucas I saw in your room, I know what you did
I know what you did last summer. :D
Me too! Holy Cow
I know what you did 3 years ago
I’ve been incorrectly Twizziling 🙈
So glad to see you got it figured out by watching this video. Nice!
Joe :0
What about long vertical blinds for the patio on the second floor? @videojoeknows
Just to let you know...2016 post must let you know your posts are timeless. Thanks again!
So awesome to hear!!
Thanks Joe, my dad taught me this, but you are correct, I am completely shocked to see how many people do not have their blinds set properly.
Thanks for watching this video then!
but which way is best for privacy against buildings that are directly across from you? i'm not worried about angles in my case, but rather an apartment that's directly across from me.
Joe :0
What should i do for a 2nd floor room blinds? Should i turn the blinds up or down? I dont have time to watch this entire video
Well at night turn your lights on then walk down to the street then look up. If you can see into your room then turn your blinds the other way.....
Nice job! Thanks for your message!
So glad to hear from you! Keep watching my videos for more informative ways to go about things like saving your money!....& sanity!

Whats the best position to keep a room cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter?
AN AC UNIT
Hmmm not sure but I would want to flip the miniblinds for night no matter what so no one can see from street level up there at night. I would think that would be the main thing for sure....
That would be a start for sure!
I'm so glad it took me 23 years to learn this.
In all actuality, thank you 🙏
So glad to hear it! You can always learn something new each day I say!
Is it possible to correct wooden blinds where the blinds are not closing enough. I have about 1/4 in space near the top and as you go down the gap widens?
Not sure why that was happening to you but there's only so much you can do with wooden blinds....
Did you ever figure out your miniblind issue? Pull the string at a 45 degree angle & that should release the miniblinds to go down. See what I mean?
Joe :0
Holy crap😨
Yeap... He said he wanted to strangle ...crazy ppl out there
I wish this were true. But it depends on the manufacturer. Some blinds are made to close more tightly in only one direction. My wooden slat blinds must be closed how the it shows on the instructions for a complete almost vertical close.
All I can say is if you can see them then they can see you....
Thanks for the added info....nice!
Thank you Joe! I live on the second floor and I always felt like people could see me at night.. This video helped clarify everything! Again, thanks!
THANK YOU! I've been doing it wrong all this time. 1st time living on the 2nd floor of an apartment building
Awesome!
Oh Lord! That means our neighbors been watching my whole family naked 😂 because our bathroom blinds were facing the opposite way! 🤷🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🧐😂😂🤦🏽♀️
OH Lord that's what it means! If you can see them then of course they can see you. Tilt those blinds the other way. Sorry neighbors!
What I want to know is does having them turned one way or the other block out more light.
All I can say is if you tilt your blinds & if you can see them then they can see you....especially at night with your lights on.
Joe :0
Thank you so much. I just moved into my own place and had no idea I witch way to turn my blinds being on an upper level.
Thanks for your message!
What about if you live on a fifth flr and there's a 6th floor above, across?
Now you're getting tricky for sure! I don't know! LOL
but which way is best for blocking out light?
Good question. You will have to play around with your blinds in order to determine that one. It depends on how tight your particular miniblinds close tilted up &/or also tilted down. Try that & you will soon find out which way is best for you. Joe :0
Thanks. I just had some new blinds installed in my room. I face them down, that seems to block out most of the light
That sounds good. Thanks for letting me know!

Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to see all the ways you could be saving money around the house.
Awesome to hear! Keep it going you!
I always twizzled up because it lets in less light. Another thing about the second floor blinds twizzled down is at night there is not as much light coming in. The street lights might make enough on the floor to find your way to the bathroom.
made me very confident that this video said exactly what i already thought. thank you joe!!
Thanks for your message!
Actually I obsess over this and I specifically came to see what the best way would be for my place (3rd option) so good community service there!
Haha! You're welcome!
More importantly I was worried if he was just going to talk about the first floor and not the second floor (which was the information I need) thank you so much for this
Thanks for watching! All I can say is if you can see them then they can see you...!
Nice job! If you are inside & if you can look down & see them then they can see you....
Exactly what I was looking for. Concise and informative. Thanks!
Angela Mack I'm afraid you don't know what concise means.
Thanks so much for your messages! Keep it going!
Hope this video helped you with your issue. Did it?
Saving lives since 2011. Thank you.
LMAO!! Right!
Glad you got THAT settled. Thanks for letting VideoJoe"know"!!!! :0
First floor = twist it to the right?
Second/Third floor = twist it to the left?
U are a genius. Thanks joe! Probably the coolest guy ever. Oh and u settled an arguement for my hubby and I.
Haha....don't tell hubs that I"M the man! I can keep secrets too.....!
What about vertical blinds
Good question! Keep those vertical blinds closed nice & tight at night since people can still see what you are doing when your lights are on & it's dark outside.
Question: If the blinds are twizzled facing up, can the cool air of the A/C fall into the blinds and escape through the window? Contrariwise, if the blinds are twizzled facing down, will the cool air just cascade down towards the floor keeping the home cooler?
And obviously, all of this would be vice-versa for heating (since heat rises).
Never really thought about the air stuff....only how to protect your security when you are on a 2nd floor with lights on at night so no one could see you from looking in.....
this is very true. i was sitting there staring at my blinds and decided to look it up lmao. good video
Yes yes & more yes!
thanks Joe, you just ended an ongoing argument between us...and I have to say I was wrong!...And so was my man... I had the blinds the downstairs way you showed in every room in the house, and he thought it should be the upstairs way in every room. Thanks to you, now we don't think we have privacy, we KNOW it! twizzle up for downstairs and twizzle down upstairs :)
Awesome to hear. I hope you two made up after this! LOL
Depends how you want the light to come in
At night though you don't want people to look up & in your room when your lights are on. During the day you can then tilt the blinds however you want....
I've been closing them incorrectly this whole time!! That means the business next door has seen it all 😳 Thanks for this video!
Well at least you now know! If you can see them then they can see you. Now you can put the brakes on...thanks for your message!
What about 3rd floor?
I would still say to tilt the blind slats facing "up" from the inside. If you face them down & have the lights on at night all you're doing is giving people down below the show of their life! Don't do it, ahem. See what I mean? Here's a test....tilt the blinds facing down & leave your lights on then go down &look up from outside & have your friend walking around. You will see everything...especially if the blinds aren't tilted "tight" which most people don't. But then have your friend up in the room at night while you're down outside then call them on their cell phone & tell them to tilt the blinds the other way & see what happens. Presto!
2021 here, just randomly thought about it, and it has been buggin me, and now I am here xD
The guy downstairs is not going to be happy now! Joe :0
Haha we live in a condo. With condos on both sides on a cult a sac street. So the neighborhood won't get a free show anymore. Bummer for them..
Glad to know after all this time, you know how to work those blinds!....LOL Joe :0
@shattered0717 Your Dad must be a smart man!! Thanks for continuing to watch my videos & commenting. Joe :0
