Rob Halford is such a casual guy. He's a big name in Metal, yet he's the kind of person you can just have a beer with and just be natural. A real testimony to being a decent human being.
I have a lot of respect for rock stars that you never see f'd up, on alcohol or drugs. This guy is one of them. Not that they don't party, but they are grounded enough to not let it get the best of them.
@@tonymarshall3978 yeah, you could really tell that his voice was affected by something for the first half of the 80s. His live shows during that era are a shadow of what he was capable of in his prime. Still good though, which is a testament to his amazing ability.
I’ve seen Judas Priest 9 times over the years, starting in 1981 with Point Of Entry tour. Even though the members have somewhat changed, the band is still true to their metal. The latest record, Firepower, absolutely kills, one of their best! Long Live Judas Priest!!
I love this guy, i grew up with metal from i was 15 till being 60 years old now. My son started to listen to metal when he was old enough and even been to JP show in Sweden. Rock on and be safe all
This is a fascinating snapshot in time for multiple reasons. First is that the band just wasn't active, in a public sense, in 1989. There was no album and no tour. It is interesting to see the look Rob was sporting in this period between the Ram it Down tour and the Painkiller era. The mustache is unusual as well. Then you have Rob referring to Dave Holland in reference to doing the next album, but they would replace him with Scott Travis. Similarly, you have Rob referring to the band being like a family, but then the Painkiller tour would be Rob's last for quite some time. I assume issues in both cases popped up later. Also cool to see Rob in such a laid back setting and giving a glimpse into his life not typical in interviews. The "Where it's hot Weekly" part was unexpected. I also appreciated hearing his view on his fame and how it's a small price to pay. I do suspect that his level of fame was such that it provided a good balance to where he could go about things without too much hassle. That's what it sounds like from the way he described it.
Metal music is a celebration of life. Some of the greatest guitarists, drummers, bassists and vocalists. Yes metal has no problem singing about addiction, suicide, sex, life's woes but it's also a celebration of life.
@Flat Earth Florida How weak. And, you lose. Halford out sang every one of them. Easily. And for the record, I do not condone perversion. But my ears work fine.
He's such a professional! At the end (13:00ish) he is doing the TV commercial w the kid from the local radio station is hilarious! Rob reads the lines like a pro! The kid gets stuck drops a line... Rob picks it right up and NEVER skips a beat! Kid is probably STILL stuck in AZ looking at the camera like a deer in headlights 🦌
Rob Halford has put out more amazing music these past thirty years since this interview. Painkiller came out one year after, a few years later he formed the great band Fight with great albums like War Of Words and A Small Deadly Space, by the end of the 90's and the early 2000's he formed the band Halford which was phenomenal with great albums like Resurrection and Crucible, and by 2004 he had returned to Judas Priest and since then has put out great albums like Angel Of Retribution, Redeemer Of Souls, and especially the MASTERPIECE Firepower. Rob Halford is still just as relevant as he was in this video over thirty years ago. Rob Halford deserves to be called the Metal God because in my opinion no other singer has been a bigger influence for Heavy Metal music than he has.
What a wonderful interview and look into the life of a legend. Mr. Halford has been a huge influence in my life and I now live in the Phoenix area as well. I appreciate the great questions Joel asks and am really glad to see this online. Subscribed!
Not "still" one of the best voices, but being gay maybe gives you an extra sensibility and higher voice registers which can be an advantage (just like Freddie Mercury). I have to add it's not a scientific fact, just my impression :)
Rob although this interview is so awkward but I still love you friend you are the consummate professional above anything else. Even back in 1989 I just graduated from high school. Me and my best friend back at this time had at this time have already seen Judas Priest numerous times and we both just laughed when we saw you with the songs you and the band wrote about Metal entities but we loved you Rob and the group. Dang I miss that time you transcend time love you Rob and Priest.
Oh man, the guy with the puppet at 0:35 is Dan Horn, and his mannequin was named Orson. Any kid who grew up in Phoenix in the 80s knew that. He was always on the Wallace and Ladmo kids' tv show. And Jim Keeler sitting with Rob at 13:05 was in a Phoenix band called Surgical Steel. I remember Rob sang on at least one of their songs. I also remember that "Where It's Hot" weekly magazine they're advertising. I had no idea Rob was one of the publishers.
Oh it's so Eighties how they look! :D So many things happened since then - with Rob and in general, too. But he's still around doing on the highest level what only he can.
I've loved music made by people older than me for a long time. Had heroes like Dio, Iommi, Halford, KK and Tipton... Priest, Sabbath, Metallica and many others, all being hugely admired, later in life, is a beautiful thing. Metal has never had any inherent ageism, that I've ever heard of, whatsoever. This is also a beautiful thing.
@Lily Govi Two of the greatest rock singers to come out of Great Britain, living through the same era, would be an interesting meet-up. At least from a music fan perspective you imagine it to be.
Michael Canada Fucking DORK! You’re so slick with your 3rd grade flaming comment. Is it by chance a commentary on your own goofy picture? If so I apologize. And agree. Jackass.
The host seems a little in the dark regarding Rob's accolades and influence on the new generation of metal bands, but that doesn't even matter. Rob takes it in stride and provides an awesome interview regardless. Is that really surprising? Not at all. What a class act.
Rob Halford Is Boss & Judas Priest Rules it's a shame I didn't get to see Them perform at The Download Festival in Sydney Australia but if they ever come back I'm definitely going then
So funny to watch him in these old interviews. I've been a massive fan since the screaming for vengeance record. Rob Halford being gay was never a thought. Freddie Mercury, totally. But Rob? Never. Its so obvious.

LOL ! It's 2018 April, I just took my oldest son to his first Judas Priest concert here in Utah last Friday April 13th, Friday the 13th !! 30 years later! And the new album Firepower is Fandamntastic !! I honestly don't think they made any bad albums. I admit I wasn't a big fan of the Tim Ripper Owens albums. Jugulator, Demolition. I thought the live albums of this period were better than the studio ones. The Priest has and will ALWAYS fly the flag of Metal. All prayers and thoughts for Glenn Tipton. \m/ ✌from Utah.
Saw them in Houston last Sunday. Took my 19 year old daughter to her first Priest concert. I feel same wabout the Ripper years, just couldn't get into it. I think all of the rest is fantastic. Been diggin the Painkailler Album lately. They have put out so much great music you could live off of Judas Priest only.\m/ From Texas.
Hell yeah 🤘 I guess I'm a different generation, but I first got into Priest when I was about 10 years old, and last year I got to see them for the first time at 20. Priest was one of the first bands that really got me interested in music and no matter what other stuff I feel like listening to at any given time (I'm really big on ska lately...) I can always come back to them. 50 years' worth of incredible metal - it's an unbelievable body of work and they still deliver.
NOT A BRUMMIE ACCENT !!!!! Although he was born in Sutton Coldfield, he grew up in Walsall and that is a pure YAM YAM accent, even though he is trying to talk posh

He’s like 35 years sober so you can’t exactly have a beer with him but I take your point haha.
You got that right brother! Rob seems like just a down to earth guy. He’s very humble outside of music and he seems like he could connect with people.
Never has a guy been so comfy in his leather outfit 😀

he could hit incredible notes and then got clean in 86 and said "He realized it was so much easier and could hit even higher"

When this was taped,Rob had already been clean and sober for 3 years. Still sober after 36 years.
Rob is a born diplomat, and has good manners.
If he wasn't The Metal God, I could easily see him as a laywer or businessman.
this was his last year with hair, in 1990 he adopted the painkiller look.
good thing he shaved off his head. his thinning hair makes him look older
@@gwapoo He didn't look too bad with that thinning hair, but the shaved head is his iconic look.
He did had at german army look , blond short shaved , then shaved in 1991
