I’ve said before but because these are the first time you are reacting to songs, it should be the studio version not a live version. Lots of times live doesn’t give the original justice. ❤

The singer, Simon Le Bon, wrote the song after the loss of a close friend. After several lines of the chorus, he says "where is my friend when I need him most?" The back up singers say "Gone away" He wrote the song in an attempt to help heal the horrible grief he was feeling. It worked. Beautiful song! Thanks for the reaction!!

More talented than their good looks might lead you to believe. The had some huge hits, and definitely show that quality you talk about where bands seem to age well. "Her name is Rio" has the totally opposite vibe from this song. But this song just screams for holding up a lighter!

The band took their name from a character in a 1968 sci fi film Barbarella. They were massive in the 80s with a string of hits. Their songs were very Cathy and updates. Try listening to Rio, Hungry like the Wolf. They also sang the theme tune to the James Bond film A view to a kill.

Also: I've listened to Duran Duran and Depeche Mode since the early eighties. I had to tell my friends, who had a thing about either hating one or the other. I finally got accepted for loving both bands. Depeche Mode was always my favorite band. Always will be. But Duran Duran did make some of my all time greatest hits, as well. The backstory to this song is so sad.
The origins of "Ordinary World" were the results of tragedy: the death of singer Simon Le Bon's good friend, David Miles, of a drug overdose in 1986.

  • @erickent3557
    @erickent3557 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Duran Duran started in the late 70s as part of the "New Romantic" scene, with emphasis on a visual, fashion art style. The music is subsumed under the generalized New Wave umbrella. Duran Duran was HUGE in the early 80s. Ordinary World was kinda a comeback for them in the early 90s. I love the first album, and the bass line from Last Chance On The Stairway from their second is really effing cool...

OK, you're delving into my biggest crush in junior high! I adored Duran Duran, and had scrapbooks and such. This is NOT my favorite song by them. Duran Duran was Simon Le Bon (lead singer), Nick Rhodes (keyboards), Andy Taylor (guitar), John Taylor (bass, and my biggest crush), and Roger Taylor (drums). None of the Taylors are related, oddly enough!
The best songs (in my opinion) are these, in no particular order. The videos were cinematic and intense, and added a lot to the songs themselves. Hungry Like the Wolf, Save a Prayer, Girls on Film, Rio, Planet Earth, Is There Something I Should Know?, The Reflex. Some others that are lovely - Wild Boys, A View to a Kill (was a James Bond movie theme), New Moon on Monday, New Religion, Come Undone, Notorious, The Union of the Snake, Night Boat, Sound of Thunder.
And yes, Simon LeBon has a fantastic voice - and an incredibly wide range of styles.

I was 'rocker' back in the day, yet I was also a closet Wham/George Michael AND Duran Duran fan. Duran Duran were truly one of the signature bands beginning in the early 80's. The women absolutely LOVED these guys for their looks and fashion, which they blended so well. They were also very talented musicians and singers. Somebody already mentioned reviewing their actual music videos from that time, as not only did they set the standard for video production yet to come, but did it for all genres to try and live up to.
You often comment on you PDing Club, and these dudes might just have been the biggest PDing group ever. Girls LOVED them and even if your girlfriend allowed you to go to their concert with them, you had to resign yourself to the fact that if your girl did get to 'go back stage' to 'meet them', you nor relationship would matter in that '15 minutes of fame.' Sure, there were groupies back then for all bands, BUT there wasn't a girl who didn't become a groupie for these dudes. Shit, you could be in the room with her & them and it wouldn't stop what was going to happen.
The Beatles were known as the 'Fab 4', and these guys were often referred to as the 'Fab 5'. This song came later, but their primary popularity came waaay before this song was released and personally, I really do love this particular song.
Check out their videos...They were the Grand Poopie back in early to mid 80s.
Trust me! Signed - Rocker Dude
IF you could play one of their songs on acoustic guitar or a keyboard and had even a decent voice, you'd have one sewn up in the latter part of the evening at even something like a keg party, campfire, or just playing drunk on a curb of some street. You were golden!

Yeah, SLB (& all of DD) were so young that no one coached him on performing live so DD canceled a cpl tours/performances that yrs later he talked about how he had to scream so he could hear himself over Andy's Guitar & all the screaming fans; so he's had some pretty bad damage to his vocal chords over time; including losing half his range that required him to see several doctors & work really hard to get most of it back, which was a big scare for the band.
But he sounds great still, & his voice is just as unique as ever.
You can really hear his range & tonal changes; particularly when it comes to him doing his own harmonies, which can't be done live w/o using a recorded vocal track & that's just not how he rolls… He'd rather finish the concert missing a few notes or changing the key (like in this performance) than lip-sync, use autotune, or end early; & I totally respect him for that (I'm assuming most Duranies are the same)…

Only 80's pop band I've stuck with through the years, or even more than one album. They have a hard rocking side (see Of Crime And Passion) that sent me towards rock, rather than pop. Went off with Bon Jovi, then Whitesnake (old school, y'all, not the scream fest versions, but the blues rock versions) Heck fire, can you do a react to old school Whitesnake? Say, "Don't Break My Heart Again," "Ready and Willing" or "Lovehunter" or even the later "Slow an' Easy"??? Talk about tongue in cheek!! Some artists today if they had to sing live couldn’t Hack it! With the exception of Taylor Swift, John Meyer and Adele music and artist fall very short of what most of us older folks grew up with. I’m a 60s baby so I grew up with 60s, 70s and 80s music. So you can imagine how critical I am of today’s artist. of course my faves are Led Zeppelin, Journey and most of all I am a Steve Perry girl😎

Never liked Duran Duran, then I found out this was their song. It's so different from their earlier hits.

This song, arguably, was past Duran's heyday in the 80s but it fits in so well with their catalog. There's just something about them and their sound that is so, I don't know if iconic is the right word, but certainly recognizable. While I'm only a passing fan of their work, I have to say, when I hear a Duran song from my youth, I get happy.

Hi Britt, definitely check out Rio & Hungry Like The Wolf. 80’s music at its best & they’re still playing to HUGE crowds at their concerts in 2023! True talent. 🌸🙂

Duran Duran is definitely worth a deeper dive. They were HUGE in the late 70s and throughout the 80s, with a catalog to match, and they're still around today. Thank you for this great reaction! ✌💙✌

The character’s name in the film Barbarella was Durand Durand. The group liked the name and guess they thought it sounded better without the last letter D in each word!

Duran Duran get their name from the antagonist of the 60s sci-fi film Barbarella, Durand Durand.
Ordinary World was a comeback song for the band in 1993, when theyd been on a slow decline after the original line up disbanded after LiveAid in 1985.
Lead singer Simon LeBon was never a great lyricist but this song is an exception. It's one of a couple Duran Duran songs where he's processing the grief of a deceased friend.
Guitarist (at the time) Warren Cuccurullo created the composition. Warren wasn't part of the earlier classic line up of the three unrelated Taylors', Nick Rhodes and Simon LeBon, so hes not in the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame with the others.
Its a memorable song but not signature Duran Duran, which is mostly dominant syncopated Bass from John Taylor locking in the Roger Taylors drumming, Disco meets Punk and Power-Pop, supported by Synth textures from Nick Rhodes.

This is an odd choice of both song and version of that song to start off Duran Duran with. You shouldn't judge them by this. Check out other songs like A View to a Kill, Wild Boys, Rio, Notorious, and Hungry Like a Wolf instead.
