Rick Beato does a great analysis of this song on his channel. He loves that little riff in the background at the beginning of the 2nd and 4th line of the verse. So beautiful.

Recently lost my best friend that I've known since the age of 11, he was an artist, poet and loved grunge/hard rock, he loved this song and I can not listen to it without feeling lost, alone and devastated..he was not supposed to go first...miss him terribly! Struggling to find my ordinary world without him in it...

I can identify with this song. I lost my brother when he was 31 years old. I was stuck in deep grief and couldn’t understand why people I would pass on the street were carrying on with their lives, laughing and didn’t have a care in the world. I had to realize that there was an ordinary world out there and with the help of God, I would survive.

This is Simon's masterpiece and the greatest Duran Duran song of all time.. His best friend killed himself and Simon wrote this song to heal himself from the grief.. They play it at every live show And they get more fan mail about this song than any other to this day.. It's incredible.. Simon says before he sings it live at every show that it's about the life you have maybe not the one you wanted but learning to survive the life you were given.. I follow the band all over the world 10 months a year every single year and I cry every single time Simon sings it.. I have 2 severely disabled children and when Simon sings it I feel it to my core. It heals my heart.. My life and my soul.. The band knows me and my life and I never miss a show and I try to never let Simon see me cry when he sings it but he sees me and nods and smiles and last year he came up and wiped my tears as I cried at a show.. Sometimes a song can heal your soul.. This is that song.. My son's first name is Duran after the greatest band in the world.. 😁 He can not speak but you turn on Duran Duran and he lights up like a Christmas tree.. Thank you for reacting to this song.. You should react to more of their music.. Maybe Rio or The Reflex or Wild Boys.. With 16 albums there is plenty to listen to 😁 Long live the greatest band in the world.. Long Live Duran Duran 🙌💕

This is one of the deepest, widest rabbit holes you will EVER fall into. Official video for Save a Prayer or Rio is a great next choice. You got introduced to 90s "comeback" (they never left) DD. You need a look at 80s "when they ruled the world" DD.

The first time I heard this song, I sobbed. There are so many lyrics, like in the chorus, "there's an ordinary world somehow I have to find" that hit hard and captured my feelings perfectly. A neighbor started molesting me when I was a very young girl back in the 1960s. All of a sudden, I didn't understand the world at all and couldn't find any way to explain what was happening to anyone around me. They all were living in what had been my ordinary world. The line, "where is the life that I recognize?" was devastating. As you noted, though, the song conveys a determination to find a way back to an ordinary world in both the music and lyrics.
Thanks for your reactions. It's a pleasure to see you enjoy songs that are long standing favorites.

Duran Duran never got the respect that they were do as musicians. They were written off as "poster boys" on teenage girl's walls. But they were truly fantastic musicians and brilliant at their craft.

This song was part of Duran Duran's rebirth in 1993 from their 80s success, marked by a lot of excess and hubris (no one was immune from it). They were great then, but this self-titled album (also called The Wedding Album) showed a band that had been through the wars, so to speak, and come out alive and changed for the better. They didn't repudiate their past, and I don't think anyone would expect them to, but their maturity came through in spades in lyrics and music. I still remember it as the first part of a one-two punch of bands I liked reflecting on the difficulties of life in hopeful ways without denying pain (the other album came the next year, 1994, Pink Floyd's The Division Bell). Do check out their 80s material, but also listen to the other big cut from this album: "Come Undone."

Duran Duran is one of my all time favorites. I’ve seen them live at least 5 times, they are everything. I can’t imagine my life without their music. Glad you found them. I love their older stuff - Sound of Thunder, Friends of Mine, Planet Earth, Careless Memories. Hungry like the wolf, Rio, Save a Prayer, New Moon on Monday….the list goes on. They did a cover of the Make me Smile - EPIC! Andy Taylor is an amazing guitar player. Best band ever. Their 007 Bond song A View to a Kill is awesome! They were the biggest band of the 80’s - I love this band and listen to them on the constant!

Yes, please check out more Duran Duran. This song is beautiful, it is what made me a DD fan in the first place. You really hit the nail on the head as far as the song's meaning as well. It is sad but also incredibly uplifting.
I highly recommend checking out 'Come Undone' next. It's from the same album (from 1993) and has a really cool "liquid" effect with the guitar. But after that, do look into their work from the 1980's. Their peak, commercially, was around 1982-'84 with songs like "Rio", "Hungry Like the Wolf", "Save a Prayer", "the Reflex", "Wild Boys", "A View to a Kill", etc...

Thank you so much for covering Duran Duran (my favorite band since 1982). They just got admitted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. One of their most beautiful songs is Do You Believe in Shame (that the lead singer Simon LeBon wrote about the death of his best friend. He wrote 3 songs about this. Ordinary World is one). Their best songs are not their biggest hits, imo, but their music videos are legendary for their movie like quality. They got their start just as MTV was debuting. Every album is just a little bit different and their still going strong.

This is my all-time favorite Duran Duran song. Simon wrote the profound lyrics to help him with grief from a close friend’s sudden death. Raw emotions often produce the “realest” lyrics. If you check out Save a Prayer, you’ll also find real emotions in the music and lyrics. This band is totally under-rated! But it’s great to see them get recognition now, as the very real artists they are!!🌻

Simon, the lead singer, wrote a trilogy of songs to a friend that committed suicide. The other two are Out Of My Mind and Do You Believe In Shame... both are great tracks you should check out as they are deeper cuts. Ordinary World was a worldwide hit, but the other two are far less known outside of the DD faithful.

Really great band to dive into. You'll get a lot of song suggestions and they will all be good ones.
As with any great band, it's always good to listen to the various phases of their careers.
Duran Duran's early phase was a fun and youthful New Wave sound. They then matured into a great synth-Pop band, then with their synth-adult contemporary sound (like the song you just listened to). Finally, in the 2000's to today they have become a cool EDM band working with producers like Timbaland and Mark Ronson, as well as legendary legacy dance music producers like Nile Rodgers and Giorgio Moroder. Last year, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I was a teenager in high school when Duran Duran hit. Me and my circle of friends, all musicians and hardcore music fanatics, were into all kinds of stuff - prog, oldies, metal & hardcore, old school outlaw country, etc. We were also teenaged young men in Texas and going through that wannabe “tough guy” phase and preferred music with an edge. Duran Duran were pretty boys from England playing pop rock perfection, and all the girls swooned over them. We really wanted to hate them, but the music and song craft was undeniable, and in the end, that’s all that really matters. We also discovered that getting tickets to their shows was a sure fire way to get dates with the hottest girls. Good times. Great band and still in my rotation after all these years. Gotta check out Rio at some point - one of the sickest basslines ever. Edit - like many others have mentioned, this song was a healing balm after the heartbreak of failed relationships and divorce. Beautiful song.

I am more familiar with their songs from the '82-'84 era, so it was interesting to hear one of their newer songs. My sister was a huge Duran Duran fan when we were teenagers and had their posters all over her room (along with Shawn Cassidy, I believe). Now, her 20-year-old son is a fan (although I think he is still a bigger Beatles/John Lennon fan and spent many years wanting to be a Michael Jackson impersonator).

I would suggest “Save a Prayer” for more beautiful Melodie’s but “The Chauffeur” is lyrical perfection in my book for the imagery that it evokes. The Deftones, Korn and the Sneaker Pimps have covered that song.

I started listening to them in 1985. Pretty huge fan ,followed some of their tours to London and Denmark and was one of the annoying ones outside hotels😂. This was a "late" song for me. I loved it but I moved into metal and...britpop in the 90s. Crazy combo. Besides the point sorry for rambling. Thank you for reacting to them, I want everyone to know how great they are, still. Fantastic musicians and songwriters.

I love your reaction to this. Simon LeBon's (the lead singer) best friend died by suicide (I think). That loss inspired this song. I AM grieving the loss of 2 people right now and can't hear this without crying.

Simon LeBon said he wrote this song to help him get over the death of a good friend. But he said the meaning of the lyrics can be applied to many different hardships.
After reading the lyrics, and watching the video, I got the impression it was about a failed relationship. Where the man is singing about his ex wife or girlfriend. Supposedly they used to fight sometimes (or a lot). During when his ex partner told him, "Pride will tear this relationship apart." Meaning winning the argument wasn't always more important than just getting along.
Now that she is gone, he has to accept going from the bliss of being in love, to the ordinary world where he is single and alone again.
And he says he knows his problems pail in comparison to the big problems of the world. But to him, losing her is still a big deal.

These guys (minus lead guitarist Andy Taylor) have been making music together since they were teenagers in the late 70's. This song came out ten years after they were the toast of MTV. Andy had left the band, replaced by Warren Coucarella (sp). Andy rejoined for a while but left again and is now battling terminal cancer. I have followed this band for over 40 years and their music has always been playing on the soundtrack of my life. This one still hurts a bit because of things I was going through when it came out (the death of my parents three months apart and getting sober). But these guys are old friends of mine and we understand each other. Great reaction!

This song is about his best friend . He died years ago.Simon Le Bon wrote a trilogy about his feeling about this situation.
Do you beleive in shame 1988
    Ordinary world 1993
    Out of my mind 1997
Duran Duran are on the air more then 40 years and they left huge footsteps in the popular culture and music .
