Ultimately I think his downfall was the fact that he got trolled relentlessly during an era when TH-cam (and really the internet in general) was much more lax on trolling and "harassment" and the fact that he was so overly passionate to the point where it caused him to eventually spiral out of control. Regardless like I said, wherever he is now, Canada, Hong Kong or who knows, I hope everything is well for him and that he's been able to move on from it all. Definitely would be nice if he some day made a return to TH-cam even if at this point I doubt that's ever gonna happen.
The clip of Mickey getting angry is actually from a Disney show, Mickey Mouse Works. Great video though, the Game Dude is always going to be one of the most fascinating stories of early TH-cam, and it’s nice that his history has been preserved and properly acknowledged by someone out there.

I like the little call back to the Barbie edit with "Barbie is one of those shitty reviews". I love your deep dive into Game Dude video, I think you approach the subject with a great deal of impartiality and it never feels exploitative or voyuerisitic as it can sometimes feel with someone who is a subject of trolling/made a mess in public. I also want to thank you for documenting this. The early days of TH-cam are kind of poorly documented, despite it being less than 20 years old. Some videos or events are just separated from their context, like video replies, the whole front page thing, star ratings, etc. And the early TH-cam game reviewer scene is really nostalgic to me as I had just started high school in 2006 and had just found out about TH-cam from a friend - I remember writing the URL in my textbook for home. I found the AVGN not long after, back when he was the Angry Nintendo Nerd, and that style of humour really appealed to me even though it was really juvenile. I remember watching people like Armake21, Ashens, IGSRJ, and Ericmansuper. Ericmansuper is one of a few I thought could hold his own against early AVGN, and he had a really good style and delivery - I even remember AVGN himself commenting on Ericmansuper's Indiana Jones review.

Even the fact he constantly revised them and was obsessed with getting perfect ratings which led to trolls giving the video one star reviews to make him redo them is a more interesting insight into the folly of perfectionism than interesting things his reviews did.
Corrections: -The Barbie episode of Game Dude was the first because of the shittier camera -The original version of the TMNT had Game Dude wear the dress shirt at the beginning as shown in an upload of the full theme song -The versions of the Mario Kart and Smash Bros. videos featured in Reviewing A Reviewer #5 are the lost remakes when Game Dude was wearing the black and white shirt(or Season 2) -The hat worn in the Bomberman video is a Canadian hockey hat(not baseball) -I think it was a missed opportunity to bring up the sped up version of the intro in the Blinx episode which made that one more memorable than other boring episodes like Sonic Heroes

The reason why game dude was wearing the baseball cap in the Bomberman Act Zero was because the 2010 Winter Olympics were being held in his home city of Vancouver. Don't know if anyone else pointed that out as well.
Good video. In the end I think a lot of what caused a lot of the Game Dude's infamy and ridicule (at least in retrospect given the fact that I was sort of around back then and agreed with what most people were saying at the time, though then again I was also like 10 years old at the time) were his rather shameful and foolish tactics (such as his many self-promotions, constant revisions, his constant feeding of trolls etc.) rather than the quality of his videos. While I'd tend to be a little bit harsher on most of these than you were, it is true that back in Game Dude's day he was far from the only one parroting AVGN; it's just that he got the most attention for it along with Chris due to how they acted on the internet. It's very possible Game Dude may have been a lot more successful had he consistently pumped out fresher, more "first rate" (for lack of a better term right now LOL, it's late as I'm typing this comment) reviews rather than constantly revising his old ones and constantly giving his harshest critics what they wanted. In the end even though you could argue that most of his reviews weren't really as bad as many made them out to be (though I personally wouldn't argue they were anything special either- at best most of them were mediocre to even poor), Game Dude still brought about a lot of his own downfall.

Also, as for that weird sequence at the end of the Barbie review, I believe it was meant to capture the weird nature of dreams, and that would be what would make Game Dude wake up from his nightmare.
Honestly had GameDude NOT turned to a life of stalking his crush and later fleeing Canada to avoid getting arrested, revisiting his old reviews could've remained great riffing material.
Based on what I've seen of him, Game Dude's infamy seems to be more rooted in his off camera antics like the spam and revisions (and the foreskin obsession) than the actual content of his videos. There was a veritable sea of AVGN rip offs back in his hey day, many of them far worse than Game Dude could have been if he was actively trying to be bad (like Sizzler7) or just as bad if not worse yet somehow a lot more popular. (Like Jedite) I think he'd have more of a legit cult following if he didn't do things that painted targets on himself for trolling. And you know, didn't dive off the deep end and stalk his girlfriend but that might be redundant to mention at this point.
I agree a lot on Jedite. I liked his content back in the day when it still was on TH-cam, though there really wasn't a whole lot of substance at all to his reviews and I certainly think he benefitted a lot from just being a product of his time.

I think Jedite benefited from two major things, getting in on the angry review style early and being among a handful of people on early youtube who could upload longer than 10 minute videos. I saw some clips of his classic content, and hoo boy has that stuff aged bad. For what it's worth, like most who stuck with it he did improve and people started to appreciate him more outside of filler between AVGN episodes when he started talking about things he was personally passionate about.
@@ColdCHAOS1 I've been on TH-cam on and off since 2007, so I know a fair amount of content creators/drama spanning way back then, even if most of it I didn't really understand at the time since I was just a very young kid at the time, LOL.
Honestly, I'm just not a fan of Game Dude. He was technically competent and had a personality down, but that would mean he would be susceptible to scrutiny, because he had the wherewithal to make better content. Otherwise, it would become far too predictable, if it was unknown, it would be a negative review, if it was a new game of an ongoing franchise, it would be a negative review. He just came off as incredibly grating to me. I hope he's doing alright, but I honestly don't miss his content.
a cover band usually refers to a band that covers songs from one band, hence they cover the band. on a side a tribute band is this but they dress up and present as the band as well. a band that plays covers of multiple artists is just a band.
I actually think Game Dude is right about Conker L&R. The game is very washed out graphically, it has a lot of issues with blurring. It does get fairly glitchy, and the controls are definitely a bit funky. But that game has much bigger criticisms than the ones he lobbed at it

If you were to rank his reviews from least favorite to favorite judging from the best available versions, what would your list be? My favorite is probably the Star Fox review and my least favorite is the Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters video. All of his other videos have at least one funny moment but the Size Matters video doesn’t really have that. It also doesn’t last long enough to evolve beyond the skeleton of an idea that is there. Anyway, a few of my other favorite Game Dude videos include Mario Kart, Bomberman Act Zero and Sonic Riders.
I think I agree with your two choices there. Some of my other favorites are Donkey Kong, Mario Smash Kart and the ones you mentioned. My other least favorites would be Kirby, Bill and Ted and Barbie.

The ones I omitted were videos I didn't have anything noteworthy to say or add that you didn't mention here already. Sonic 06 - Like you said, a solid start! The rant at the end is probably my favorite from him. That triceratops line in particular is really funny to me. I think I like the GameDudeClassics version the best. The GameDude8899 version cuts out some of the jokes but the editing was improved a bit (particularly the audio). Barbie - I actually think this video is fine. It's not as good as the previous entry nor is it one of his better videos but there are a few funny moments and his comments/criticisms for the game seem fine. The ending is indeed very strange. The first time I watched this review was at night on my phone and that penguin caught me off guard. By the way, judging from how he used it in a couple of his later videos, I think Alex had a fascination with the "Water World" music. SSBB - I wouldn't call this one of my favorite Game Dude videos but it is pretty enjoyable. I actually really liked the Subspace Emissary so I don't agree with his evaluation of that. Though, I can see where he is coming from. I do agree that online was garbage. The re-filmed version is definitely superior. I'd probably like the original a little more if the audio and video quality weren't noticeably worse than his other videos. Mario Kart - This was the first Game Dude video I watched in full thanks to the Twitter meme. Like you said, it's not good as a review but it is very humorous. So many classic and hilarious lines! One of my favorites that no-one ever talks about is "some of the magic is instantly destroyed by the presence of these Fisher Price toys!" Tail of the Sun - This might be his most forgettable review period. It's not bad but there aren't that many funny moments and he mostly just lists off criticisms. The compliant about the credits is one of the dumbest things he's put in one of his videos. The parts where he complains about the caveman falling asleep and the line "more like Fail of the son of a bitch" are kind of funny but other than that I don't care for this video much. Kirby - This video is garbage as a review but there are at least a few amusing moments (like the parts where Alex interacts with Kirby). I don't hate this video but it's clearly on the lower end of his catalog quality-wise. The GameDude8899 revision is slightly better as a review since he removes the character variety compliant and acknowledges that HAL made both Kirby and Smash Bros with the line "Just cuz HAL made both games doesn't mean they can't be original". The Air Ride Menu compliant is still really unnecessary. Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure - I wish I could've seen the original cuz I'm sure it was more entertaining than the available versions. The only funny part is that scream he does towards the end. The title card in the GameDude8899 version is also kind of neat but other than that this review is pretty underwhelming. Bubsy - The second version of the Game Dude theme sounds like it was made in GarageBand with entirely MIDI instruments. I agree it's not that bad but the first version is far superior. As for the review, I agree it's okay. The best part is definitely the Bubsy 3D review. Conker - I'll admit I have yet to play any of the Conker games so I can't really speak much on his criticisms but I found this episode mildly entertaining. The Pocket Tails segment is definitely the weakest point of the video (outside of the part where he pokes fun at the barn). However, I think the on camera portions are funny. Blinx - I think this episode is decent but I can see why you find it boring. The main issue with it is that Alex's narration was too quiet for like half the video. It's not one of his funnier episodes but it has its moments and I do like the rewinding/fast forwarding gags. Felix - I'd say this is one of his worst episodes. There aren't really any super funny moments and most of the criticisms are BS. The high pitch cats clip is not funny at all and it kind of freaks me out to be honest. Also, I don't like how the video abruptly stops. I know this isn't the first time he's done that but it feel especially jarring here. Gex 3 - This is sort of like the Mario Kart video in that it's not good as a review but I find rather humorous. The on screen parts and most of the jokes he makes are pretty funny to me. His acting in this episode feels more aggressive than usual. Donald Duck Goin' Quackers - Way too short but what is here is mostly amusing. Like you said, there are some funny lines and acting. Though, it would've been better if he went into more detail about the game and wrote a longer script. I can imagine him saying stuff like "Donald Duck is one of Disney's classic stars" and "this game is a disgrace to the duck's legacy!" but what we got wasn't bad. Size Matters - One again, way too short. It's disappointing how his last review is his worst. It's feel so rudimentary and none of the jokes are that funny. It almost makes me question why he even bothered making it. Easy pick for least favorite episode. Well, that was kind of a lot lol. I know a lot of people hated him but I genuinely enjoy some of Game Dudes videos. It's too bad he had such an obsessive personally to the point of endlessly revising his videos and refusing to let go of a relationship. Even though he was heavily inspired by the AVGN, his reviews do have their own personality somewhat.
I loved the review because most of what you ever hear about The Game Dud are his mishaps and wrong dealings although I really can't find anything good to say about his reviews or rants. Most of what I hear from The Game Fude's videos are not even AVGN inspired phrases but literal quotes or direct references from AVGN episodes that had nothing to do with the game Aleksandar4488 was actually reviewing/ranting. I can't help to wonder what if he stopped watching James Wolfe's videos and started doing reviews based on his own creation but I also realize that on rare occasions whenever he had an input of his own on his videos he came off as creepy, dark, furry or the three combined.

Even if it somehow wasn't available after the fact, that seems like an obvious way to quell the misconception if he isn't just trolling people when he denies the Game Dude was who they were making fun of.
To my knowledge Arin never said who it actually was. The reason I think Arin isn't lying though is because he's directly made fun of Irate Gamer before and never pretended it was someone else.

I think GameDude could have improved if people actually gave constructive criticism back then. But back in the old days, people liked to be "trolls". Even I liked to act that way sometimes because I never took it really serious and thought everyone was having fun and not taking things serious. Never seen the game review of Chameleon Twist.

What's funny about the 'damn, damn' thing, is that in trying to copy the AVGN, he loses what makes the joke work. It's a riff on a scene from Back to the Future, that's actually recapture quite faithfully (just switch out a clock tower with a game system) but the whole meat of the joke is lost with Game Dude.

Fair opinion but I still don't think it was that clear. He could have said "female animal characters" but he said "female foxes" which Minnie Mouse is not. He also didn't show an image of Minnie which might have helped.

The reason why game dude was wearing the baseball cap in the Bomberman Act Zero was because the 2010 Winter Olympics were being held in his home city of Vancouver. Don't know if anyone else pointed that out as well.

Good video. In the end I think a lot of what caused a lot of the Game Dude's infamy and ridicule (at least in retrospect given the fact that I was sort of around back then and agreed with what most people were saying at the time, though then again I was also like 10 years old at the time) were his rather shameful and foolish tactics (such as his many self-promotions, constant revisions, his constant feeding of trolls etc.) rather than the quality of his videos. While I'd tend to be a little bit harsher on most of these than you were, it is true that back in Game Dude's day he was far from the only one parroting AVGN; it's just that he got the most attention for it along with Chris due to how they acted on the internet.
It's very possible Game Dude may have been a lot more successful had he consistently pumped out fresher, more "first rate" (for lack of a better term right now LOL, it's late as I'm typing this comment) reviews rather than constantly revising his old ones and constantly giving his harshest critics what they wanted. In the end even though you could argue that most of his reviews weren't really as bad as many made them out to be (though I personally wouldn't argue they were anything special either- at best most of them were mediocre to even poor), Game Dude still brought about a lot of his own downfall.

Based on what I've seen of him, Game Dude's infamy seems to be more rooted in his off camera antics like the spam and revisions (and the foreskin obsession) than the actual content of his videos. There was a veritable sea of AVGN rip offs back in his hey day, many of them far worse than Game Dude could have been if he was actively trying to be bad (like Sizzler7) or just as bad if not worse yet somehow a lot more popular. (Like Jedite) I think he'd have more of a legit cult following if he didn't do things that painted targets on himself for trolling. And you know, didn't dive off the deep end and stalk his girlfriend but that might be redundant to mention at this point.
I agree a lot on Jedite. I liked his content back in the day when it still was on TH-cam, though there really wasn't a whole lot of substance at all to his reviews and I certainly think he benefitted a lot from just being a product of his time.

I think Jedite benefited from two major things, getting in on the angry review style early and being among a handful of people on early youtube who could upload longer than 10 minute videos. I saw some clips of his classic content, and hoo boy has that stuff aged bad. For what it's worth, like most who stuck with it he did improve and people started to appreciate him more outside of filler between AVGN episodes when he started talking about things he was personally passionate about.

Honestly, I'm just not a fan of Game Dude. He was technically competent and had a personality down, but that would mean he would be susceptible to scrutiny, because he had the wherewithal to make better content. Otherwise, it would become far too predictable, if it was unknown, it would be a negative review, if it was a new game of an ongoing franchise, it would be a negative review.
He just came off as incredibly grating to me. I hope he's doing alright, but I honestly don't miss his content.

I actually think Game Dude is right about Conker L&R. The game is very washed out graphically, it has a lot of issues with blurring. It does get fairly glitchy, and the controls are definitely a bit funky. But that game has much bigger criticisms than the ones he lobbed at it

If you were to rank his reviews from least favorite to favorite judging from the best available versions, what would your list be? My favorite is probably the Star Fox review and my least favorite is the Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters video. All of his other videos have at least one funny moment but the Size Matters video doesn’t really have that. It also doesn’t last long enough to evolve beyond the skeleton of an idea that is there. Anyway, a few of my other favorite Game Dude videos include Mario Kart, Bomberman Act Zero and Sonic Riders.
I think I agree with your two choices there. Some of my other favorites are Donkey Kong, Mario Smash Kart and the ones you mentioned. My other least favorites would be Kirby, Bill and Ted and Barbie.
@@okfinebethatway Good picks. Actually, I'll share a few thoughts on some of his reviews since I have some time to spare. The ones I omitted were videos I didn't have anything noteworthy to say or add that you didn't mention here already.
Sonic 06 - Like you said, a solid start! The rant at the end is probably my favorite from him. That triceratops line in particular is really funny to me. I think I like the GameDudeClassics version the best. The GameDude8899 version cuts out some of the jokes but the editing was improved a bit (particularly the audio).
Barbie - I actually think this video is fine. It's not as good as the previous entry nor is it one of his better videos but there are a few funny moments and his comments/criticisms for the game seem fine. The ending is indeed very strange. The first time I watched this review was at night on my phone and that penguin caught me off guard. By the way, judging from how he used it in a couple of his later videos, I think Alex had a fascination with the "Water World" music.
SSBB - I wouldn't call this one of my favorite Game Dude videos but it is pretty enjoyable. I actually really liked the Subspace Emissary so I don't agree with his evaluation of that. Though, I can see where he is coming from. I do agree that online was garbage. The re-filmed version is definitely superior. I'd probably like the original a little more if the audio and video quality weren't noticeably worse than his other videos.
Mario Kart - This was the first Game Dude video I watched in full thanks to the Twitter meme. Like you said, it's not good as a review but it is very humorous. So many classic and hilarious lines! One of my favorites that no-one ever talks about is "some of the magic is instantly destroyed by the presence of these Fisher Price toys!"
Tail of the Sun - This might be his most forgettable review period. It's not bad but there aren't that many funny moments and he mostly just lists off criticisms. The compliant about the credits is one of the dumbest things he's put in one of his videos. The parts where he complains about the caveman falling asleep and the line "more like Fail of the son of a bitch" are kind of funny but other than that I don't care for this video much.
Kirby - This video is garbage as a review but there are at least a few amusing moments (like the parts where Alex interacts with Kirby). I don't hate this video but it's clearly on the lower end of his catalog quality-wise. The GameDude8899 revision is slightly better as a review since he removes the character variety compliant and acknowledges that HAL made both Kirby and Smash Bros with the line "Just cuz HAL made both games doesn't mean they can't be original". The Air Ride Menu compliant is still really unnecessary.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure - I wish I could've seen the original cuz I'm sure it was more entertaining than the available versions. The only funny part is that scream he does towards the end. The title card in the GameDude8899 version is also kind of neat but other than that this review is pretty underwhelming.
Bubsy - The second version of the Game Dude theme sounds like it was made in GarageBand with entirely MIDI instruments. I agree it's not that bad but the first version is far superior. As for the review, I agree it's okay. The best part is definitely the Bubsy 3D review.
Conker - I'll admit I have yet to play any of the Conker games so I can't really speak much on his criticisms but I found this episode mildly entertaining. The Pocket Tails segment is definitely the weakest point of the video (outside of the part where he pokes fun at the barn). However, I think the on camera portions are funny.
Blinx - I think this episode is decent but I can see why you find it boring. The main issue with it is that Alex's narration was too quiet for like half the video. It's not one of his funnier episodes but it has its moments and I do like the rewinding/fast forwarding gags.
Felix - I'd say this is one of his worst episodes. There aren't really any super funny moments and most of the criticisms are BS. The high pitch cats clip is not funny at all and it kind of freaks me out to be honest. Also, I don't like how the video abruptly stops. I know this isn't the first time he's done that but it feel especially jarring here.
Gex 3 - This is sort of like the Mario Kart video in that it's not good as a review but I find rather humorous. The on screen parts and most of the jokes he makes are pretty funny to me. His acting in this episode feels more aggressive than usual.
Donald Duck Goin' Quackers - Way too short but what is here is mostly amusing. Like you said, there are some funny lines and acting. Though, it would've been better if he went into more detail about the game and wrote a longer script. I can imagine him saying stuff like "Donald Duck is one of Disney's classic stars" and "this game is a disgrace to the duck's legacy!" but what we got wasn't bad.
Size Matters - One again, way too short. It's disappointing how his last review is his worst. It's feel so rudimentary and none of the jokes are that funny. It almost makes me question why he even bothered making it. Easy pick for least favorite episode.
Well, that was kind of a lot lol. I know a lot of people hated him but I genuinely enjoy some of Game Dudes videos. It's too bad he had such an obsessive personally to the point of endlessly revising his videos and refusing to let go of a relationship. Even though he was heavily inspired by the AVGN, his reviews do have their own personality somewhat.

I honestly think the Mickey Mousecapade review was honestly Game Dude's best. He had some decent points about the game in that one.
I loved the review because most of what you ever hear about The Game Dud are his mishaps and wrong dealings although I really can't find anything good to say about his reviews or rants.
Most of what I hear from The Game Fude's videos are not even AVGN inspired phrases but literal quotes or direct references from AVGN episodes that had nothing to do with the game Aleksandar4488 was actually reviewing/ranting. I can't help to wonder what if he stopped watching James Wolfe's videos and started doing reviews based on his own creation but I also realize that on rare occasions whenever he had an input of his own on his videos he came off as creepy, dark, furry or the three combined.
This dude has slowly become a legend. Not to dissimilar to how Tommy Wiseau became a legend for The Room. If Game Dude made a comeback in 2024 I bet he’d get a ton of views, and it’d be well-received. Ironically, sure…but still.

Did Arin ever confirm what video it was that him and Danny were spoofing if it wasn't the Game Dude? Even if it somehow wasn't available after the fact, that seems like an obvious way to quell the misconception if he isn't just trolling people when he denies the Game Dude was who they were making fun of.
To my knowledge Arin never said who it actually was. The reason I think Arin isn't lying though is because he's directly made fun of Irate Gamer before and never pretended it was someone else.

What's funny about the 'damn, damn' thing, is that in trying to copy the AVGN, he loses what makes the joke work. It's a riff on a scene from Back to the Future, that's actually recapture quite faithfully (just switch out a clock tower with a game system) but the whole meat of the joke is lost with Game Dude.
