    This hoarding has been going on for years and years. These men need psychological and psychiatric help. This has nothing to do with religion nor wherever they live. It is a psychiatric disorder. I wish them well.

    • @Shmaples
      @Shmaples 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Yes. Cleaning it up is only a temporary fix. These people can't help their compulsion to hoard. This level of hoarding is serious and needs serious professional care. I also hope they can get that because without it their homes will return to this state in the next 5 to 10 years. It's a lifelong struggle but I wish them the best.

      @Belltown Daisy I also thinks theirs is a patriarchal society, where one might be old-school, stubbornly, in their views of ``women's work?'' I mean, I am sure they try to be progressive in this area, but more might tend to fall ``thru the cracks'' because of this old-fashioned society.

      @Elaine Male That is an interesting comment to me because I had a huge need for parental love. Yet I was very neat and organized as a child, and still am as a senior. I have often thought that since my world was out of control around me, I tried to control the little world of my belongings by cleaning and organizing them. So maybe different people handle things in different ways. So interesting. I have always been glad that I am not a hoarder.

    • @The_Cat_Lady_
      @The_Cat_Lady_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Belltown Daisy you misunderstood,
      They burry Religious items (like books for example) only *instead* of throwing away. Only When ruined, of course items in good condition can be donated or sold or what ever..
      In order to show respect to things that are considered holy/sacred.
      You dont just throw away such respected items, instead - you put it in a grave.
      But no one is actually digging a grave, its brought to the synagogue or other comunity centers and there os a place to put things, someone is burrying it all once in a while.
      Kind of like recycling places.. ;)

      Actually it's not It's been shown to be not a psychiatric disorder. It has to do with people getting too old to clean and in 95% of cases when the hoarder is given a cleaning lady months per week or twice per week the problem stops. A true psychiatric or mental illness is only treated by therapy and not by a cleaning lady. This guy is too old to clean. Who are we kidding? His kids should be over there doing it for them

    I tried to find out what happened after the cleaning. Unfortunately, Shraga passed away in 2016. I could not find much more information. I truly hope these brothers found some kind of peace and help. While I truly appreciate the work and spirit behind this documentary, I hope that people learn the importance of mental help, compassion, and community support. Something really bothers me about this, perhaps it’s because it’s because I feel for these men and I need to be part of the solution. Please check on your neighbors and try to understand that some people are suffering from mental illness.

    Btw, I used to think I was a hoarder, a friend set me straight and told me I wasn’t,
    But I’ve had trouble cleaning up and tidying up after myself for many years because I had severe fatigue and depression, so the fatigue made me “lazy” and I couldn’t take care of myself, I had to prioritize cleaning myself of the house and the house always lost…
    But then, people ask how people can live like that and not notice..
    emotional trauma and depression will do that to you and after a few years you just learn to ignore it…
    But I’ve never been able to have people over, and when I had a boyfriend I cleaned and he claimed my house was still dirty because I worked two jobs with fatigue and a chronic illness and he was “taking” my nights from me, which was nice, but I was even more exhausted. So ever since we broke up I haven’t been able to show anyone my home or my room..
    I share a lot of shame with hoarders…
    And I won’t let anyone clean for me because I’m ashamed of what they say when they find out how I live.
    Now I’m dealing with stage 4 cancer and before I dealt with severe endometriosis, which was an unacknowleged condition for many decades… so I now live in filth because I’m in too much pain to clean it up, but I can’t let anyone see how I live so they can come clean for me, so I’m alone.
    It’s really sad and tragic..
    I feel for hoarders so much… 💔

    Hoarding is a very serious issue. It's been finally has been classified in recent years as an official mental illness. I wish some people would delve beyond the hoard and treat the root cause. It's always some type of trauma (death, abuse, divorce, etc) that kicks off the behavior. It's worse when the person have had the tendency before the trauma occurs.

    OMG I just realised the magnitude of the hoarding when the person filming had the camera on one of the brothers sitting in a chair I believe was the lounge room he was Absolutely surrounded in stuff and the room behind him the stuff had spilled out into the lounge room he was sitting in.
    Jeez what a hoard !

  • @lucyramsden1718

    A lot of their behavioural traits indicate that this gentleman and his brother might score highly for ASD. On that basis I don’t think the hoarding behaviour is as simple as being eradicated through therapy as many people are suggesting. I do think their culture is relevant though due to the quid rigid traditional gender roles within an Orthodox Jewish household. It is likely that the son’s will have been nurtured by their Mother, with regards to keeping the household, until she was no longer able to do so.
    You could see that the clear out was distressing for them both though despite them admitting that it was a load of old tat that had sat there for ages when they were challenged! I completely agree with the 2nd twin’s comment though, about how once you’ve made something permissible, then that’s it, the behaviour is often hard to reverse.
    Think I need to watch something to mend my heart because that main guy struck me as being way too lonely 😔.

    Hoarding is done because of emotional trauma, I’m not saying this is his case, but I knew a lady in Israel, her name is Agnes, a Hungarian Jewish lady, eccentric and very lonely.. she’d come to the theater where I worked at the Boxoffice and we would talk about music.
    She was very eccentric.
    One day, my coworker sent me an internet article about a crazy hoarder, about how they’d just made the city clear her house without her permission.
    Then it clicked: a week before she came over and told us she was robbed and that her house was empty. I gave her my phone number to call if she felt lonely, I was afraid to give my number to a stranger, you never know.. she never used it..
    She turned out to be a hoarder because her mom was a Holocaust survivor.
    They took all her stuff from her once at Auschwitz, so she never threw anything away ever again…
    When I found out, it was because they showed her facial profile on the internet and made an entire article out of the crazy hoarder lady and the smells and sounds and what they found... And everyone at my job was laughing at her, and I was just sitting there and crying because she told me her story in several parts and when I added it all up I realized why she would become a hoarder…
    Broke my heart..
    She even has a hugs dreadlock hanging from her hair, because she can’t even fathom cutting her hair for the same reason if the holocaust trauma…
    Second generation holocaust trauma is way too real…

    35:16 seeing everything in such disarray and the megilla in perfect condition brought tears to my eyes. There's a story there... why do they have a megilla? They're probably not reading for other people. It's for themselves, because they have to hear the megilla read from the scroll on purim every year. Perhaps they don't go to synagogue (or anywhere outside) anymore?

    I felt bad for the men, seems like they need more people in their lives, because as you age, so many criends and family die, leaving a huge gap that needs filled. I have lost most friend's and family as I am older, it is hard. I was glad they were going to bury, and not burn the religious books, that was a nice gesture, from some nice men. I hope someone comes to see these men to help them. May God guide them to all truth.

    As a New Yorker/ Brooklynite, I knew this had to be Crown Heights (on the edge of East Flatbush). If the front yard was a mess, i think I've passed this house many of times due to my mother-in-law living in the area. They cleaned up years ago so at some point, they came to their senses. The great thing about the Hasidic community is that they help each other out regardless of the circumstances & they have huge tight-knit families. This was interesting.
