How to shoot Ice Cold Portraits in Studio | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

- If the idea of a frosty winter photoshoot chills you to the bone then this video is for you. Forget about having to go outside on a freezing day, working with numb fingers, and worrying about a shivering model. Instead, you could stay in a lovely warm home studio, get creative with your camera skills and simply make the illusion of an ice-cold photoshoot.
Gavin Hoey does exactly that in this photography tutorial. Starting with just one light, Gavin takes you through his three-point lighting setup, one light at a time. Once he’s happy with the lights, Gavin moves on to the color and adds the cold feel in-camera with a custom white balance.
To ramp up the effect, Gavin then adds a homemade fake frosty window to the scene.
Finally, it's into Photoshop where Gavin shares a simple technique to instantly add a frozen effect to any photo. All you need is one of his free frosty frames and a few clicks of the mouse.

I learned the old fashioned way using a Main, a fill, a hair light and a background light. I don't see many people use a background light anymore. While I love using a Big soft box and a V-Flat or another kind of fill the old way still has it's place. Thank you for restoring my faith in the Old School way :-) Great video Gavin.

Thanks for the freebie Gavin!! At first I was kinda critical (to myself, of course) of you doing the color toning in-camera because I didn't see why you wouldn't want to adjust the tones in post to be the way you wanted them. But if you're shooting RAW, you can still do that if you wanted to, plus there's something so satisfying and cool about seeing how much you can actually get exactly the way you want in-camera. Great episode!
Hi Daniel. You're spot on about the RAW re-editing option but I usually find getting it close in camera helps everyone on set visualise the final effect and that is a HUGE help!
Another great photo adventure, reminiscent of the "rainy day while you stay dry in the studio shoot!" Very inventive - kudos to Sam and Chloe for set design and makeup. Downloaded your textures plus the bkgds for flower images and signed up for your newsletter; don't know how I overlooked that before. All in all, a significant day in the life of this learning photographer thanks to you. Your videos are always the finest of TH-cam photographers. ⭐x5
