  • When things go seriously wrong, one of the things you will need is a Business Continuity Plan. And, since projects involve risk to your organization, you'll need to link into this.
    So, what is a Business Continuity Plan?
    Here, Dr Mike Clayton, founder of OnlinePMCourses.com, answers this question, in under 5 minutes.

    I get your point about it being in the heads of people. The difficult part is, you’re preparing for something that you hope will never happen. I find it helps to discuss incidents that happened to competitors to make people aware of the risks and also to evaluate your own plan for continuity.
    One major challenge is to identify core processes. It seems very simple but it’s not the same as “everyone gets to continue to do their job”.

      I like both of your points, thank you. Especially the value of case studies, anecdotes, and experiences.

    May I ask is a recovery plan can be seen as contingency planning? thanks:)

    • @Onlinepmcourses
      @Onlinepmcourses  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sophia, that's an excellent question.
      A Business Continuity Plan (BCP) is all about how the organization can maintain operations through and after a disruptive event. These might be reduced or altered to meet the needs of the new circumstances.
      A Disaster Recovery Plan is usually about how the organization will recover access to and use of its essential technology and data, while the BCP is about operations. The DRP will recover data and systems for use during and beyond the critical incident.
      These are conventional definitions.
      But I also think we need there to be an element of your recovery plan being about getting back to normal - even if it's a new normal. So, personally, I prefer to create a continuity plan about 'keeping going in the tough times' and a recovery plan about 'getting back to (a new) normal'. After some disasters (like the one we are all dealing with now), it may not be possible to revert to the situation before the incident.
      To avoid crossing with the conventional definitions, we might re-name the latter as a 'Resumption Plan'. I prefer this term to 'Reversion Plan' because you may not revert to the original state.

    • @Onlinepmcourses
      @Onlinepmcourses  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you referring to Business Disaster recovery - this is the way an organization will recover use of any critical infrastructure (usually IT, data, and communications) after a serious disruption (the disaster).

      Okay. Pacing and pauses help people who don't have English as a first language. Try the 1.25x setting. Or don't. Your call.
