A blizzard on the bonnie banks as we head west to explore beautiful Loch Lomond.

  • Van Life in Scotland. We take our work in progress camper van Daisy to the west of Scotland for her first proper trip. We plough through snow and ice to explore the banks of Loch Lomond with the plan being to head over the Erskine Bridge and up the side of the Loch through Luss and Tarbert before heading north to the Falls of Falloch and Crianlarich.
With nowhere to turn if it all goes wrong, our first attempt failed as the most severe weather in ages hits out of nowhere. Not to be put off we give it a week and then try again.
This was also a trial for the conversion of our camper van. A gas stove and a diesel heater, we should be ready for the worst the Scottish winter can throw at us.
Will our second attempt be more successful??
A huge thank you to everyone who's supported our wee channel so far, if you'd like to help support our wee adventures you can do it through through our Ko-Fi or Patreon.
All our videos are hand made from 100% organic ingredients ;). Our content is mostly filmed on a GoPro 11 with a Rode fluffy microphone to keep the wind noise down, with occasional bits on an iPhone13. We also use a DJI Mini 3 drone which we're loving getting to grips with.
We make our own music using GarageBand and the videos are edited in iMovie.
If you'd like to buy DeNiro a biscuit (and he's a good boy, honest) you can via our Ko-Fi link at www.ko-fi.com/ScotlandOnAShoes....
If you'd like to become a patron of our wee channel we also have a patreon at / scotlandonashoestring
We also have an Etsy shop where we sell some of our hand made items. It's at dandbbythesea.etsy.com

Oops, anyone spot the mistake?? I always thought Loch Lomond was the biggest body of fresh water in the UK, but it isn’t. Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland is bigger.

I live in the desert east of Palm Springs it is about 4650 ft elevation we had about a quarter of an inch of snow . Not enough for a snow ball fight but pretty . Snow in the desert is rare but it happens. Beautiful sight for a day drive. Crannogs are amazing shows how resourceful and capable our Scots ancestors were as builders. Happy New Year !

Lovely little trip, you’re lucky the snow doesn’t stick around. I suppose that can also mean very poor conditions while it’s happening because you don’t have all the equipment available, you just have to stay off the roads until it melts in a couple of days. Beautiful scenery, Loch Lomond is indeed bonnie.

Hullorerr, I've just found your channel, whit a sorry state Balloch Castle is in. I can remember when it was open tae visitors, it's sad tae see it fenced aff noo. Balloch was a really busy place years ago, the train went right up to the end of the pier so the punters could get aff and straight onto the Maid of the Loch. The no camping thing was discouraged back when I was a boy, sixty years ago. My pal and me cycled from Parkhead near tae Celtic park, tae the Duck bay marina layby. We were about tae pitch oor tent on the grass when a man wi' an official sounding voice said we couldn'y camp there. So we just slept on the beach,.

The ability of your vehicle to drive through snow without slipping, sliding and skidding is mainly governed by the equation of pressure = force / area. A BMW sports tyres that are far too wide for it's weight, therefore pressure per unit area is low and hence the tyres do not dig in. The best tyres for snow are the narrowest tyre that still safely support the weight of your vehicle. That is why Citroen 2CV's are so good on sloppy mud and snow and saloons like BMW and Mercedes aren't because of the big wide tyres, that are wider than they need to be, compared to the weight of the vehicles in slippy conditions.
