I thought it was funny how the biologist dude was really scared of the *dead* corpses and other alien stuff they saw when they were wandering around, but just wanted to touch the *alive* alien that just popped up out of nowhere. Great job, dude.

There's a few things that bothered me about this movie; one scene in particular. In the beginning when all of them were sitting down watching the hologram of the old dude, they were all bickering and wondering why they were there in the first place. When the two scientists (Charlie and Elizabeth) told them why, they didn't believe them. Don't you think this is the sort of meeting you should have BEFORE spending trillions of dollars on sending a crew into space for 2 years, and not AFTER you've arrived at your destination. Also, how did the hologram of the old dude know where to point while referring to the scientists. If you remember he was asking the two scientists to stand up and speak, and he did this while gesturing to them. Did they all have names on their seats so that each of them had to sit in that specific chair so that it would seem more realistic when the hologram pointed at them?

The thing with this movie, was that it left so many unanswered questions that had so much build up toward answers. What was the black goo and why did it have different effects? Why did the engineers regret their decisions? Why were they led to a "WMD facility"? Etc. Plus, the few answers we had to the plot, were very, VERY vague.
I don't think this movie had major plot holes as such, just ideas that didn't really get explained or shown to us as we were kept in the dark, whether this sets it up for a sequel I don't know. I for one hope it does, as I was left heavily intrigued.

    • @Mietchannel

I was laughing throughout the movie because I just couldn't relate to any of the characters. Why did this robot try to kill everyone and then help the girl? What was that baby alien? Why did the alien drink the goo? Why are they mad? Why are the scientists stupid?

Lucas Davey I respect your opinions, I agree with them. It's cliche, and you made some good points.
But the robot didn't try to help the girl, I think she opened the door right when the man was trying to kill her, and alien attacked the closest thing, which was that man. spot on the rest.

It made me ask questions too. How does David know about the Space Jockeys having never been to space before, why does this movie break so much of the previously established lore, why are xenomorph eggs mixed into the pathogen spore eggs if the spore came first? All questions that don't do the movie any favors. Seemed like a bad attempt to reboot the series without giving up what previously made it good, but, Ridley Scott should know you can't have your cake and eat it too.

I don't understand why you don't consider this a prequel jeremy, it IS a prequel, man, doesn't matter what you want to believe. It was created as such and it even has a xenomorph at the end, like what else do you need?
Idk, your little disclaimer at the beginning doesn't have weight. It's similar to those who refuse to count the star wars prequels as part of the series, which is kind of immature.

I know this comment is 9 years old but it's pretty evident throughout the movie that this is linked to Alien, because the Engineers are clearly the same race of dead Space Jockey seen in the first movie. There's a scene where the pissed off engineer sits in the ship piloting station thingy to lift off the ship and his gear/suit and the piloting thingy are an exact copy of said dead Space Jockey from Alien.

  • @BROOKIE44529

The problem with the film is that so much seemingly random shit happens with no clear explanation (although a clear explanation probably wouldn't have worked either).
Personally, after reading up on the symbolism and the most likely theory (ridley himself pretty much confirms it in an interview) explaining many of the mysteries in the film, I like it way more. It goes from a run of the mill sci-fi horror to multi-layered and deep. with that said, some of the characters still do some really dumb shit, as explained in the video. it's not the greatest film ever, i just find it interesting.

About Damon I did not know that he had rewritten the script. I don't know much about the guy or his work, but I did like seasons 5 and 6 of lost and I enjoyed Star Trek: Into Darkness, so I think he is OK.
    Cheers!

Prometheus is not great movie, but it's not terrible either. Ridley tried few things that worked in the past when he made one of the most awesome sci-fi horrors ever, but this time it didn't work as well as back then. Twice as much crew, caring about characters spread twice as much, some huge stupidity involved, ultimately not really bad, it was a good movie i enjoyed it, but ultimately nothing great.
What id DID well however was setting up a sequel. We have a mystery, engineers trying to kill us for some reason and Shaw going to find why, without doubt there is a reason for everything that had happened and sequel will explain the reason. Whether or not it will explain well... we'll see in the future.
Ultimately i will say that Prometheus was a great... trailer for Prometheus 2. I know i will watch the sequel to see these secrets uncovered, and in this Prometheus did really well.

I wish David was the main character.
The main character we did get was a complete dumbass with a strong survival quirk. Her insistence to hide behind her faith instead of confronting the scientific data given to her gave the movie a disgusting close-minded approach that gave genuine Christian scientists a bad name, and we're supposed to root for her?
Ooooh! She can use an advanced surgery pod designed for men to get an alien baby out of her! She can run away from a rolling ship in a straight line even though running left or right was a better option! Such a strong female character lmao.
Most of the characters were absolute morons; from the navigator who got lost to a scientist eager to touch a sperm snake with a vagina head.
The plot was predictable and basic. The themes presented in a dumbed down manner. Beautiful scenery and good camera work.
I really didn't like this movie. Wouldn't write death threats over it but yeah, I'm never watching it again XD

This is my review of the film: This film looks amazing. A real credit to the cinematographers and costume set designers, and it might be worth a watch just for the visuals, but that's all it really has going for it. A movie of this genre can go in either of two routes: 1) the way of "intellectual big-ideas" type films (like say 2001: A Space Odyssey or the more recent Interstellar) or 2) a sci-fi thriller that would have you at the edge of your seat (Alien). This movie was neither. It tried to be both and ended up failing because you can't have it both ways. It starts off being like the former, with steady progress, done by epic visuals and dialogue introducing certain ideas that the movie might explore (evolution vs creationalism, what it means to be human and can AI ever be human, etc.). None of that is explored at all. In fact, what is explored instead are the completely irrelevant flashbacks of the female lead and her relationship with her boyfriend... And are they interesting? No. They're annoying, especially the female lead towards the end. At times, I felt like screaming at the screen out of how stupid she acted sometimes. What about the other characters? Just as uninteresting and slightly less annoying. The pilot, played by Idris Elba, I felt was inconsistent at times (it seemed as if he was a careless jerk in the beginning and then he was a hero at the end?) and throughout the film, I kept questioning |why was he even there?" The movie attempts to answer this by him saying "I just fly the ship." That's lazy writing. The biologist who could've been a way of exploring the ideas of evolution vs creationalism and "what it means to be human?" was wasted. Charlize Theron's character was consistent, but not in any way that helped the film, and you were supposed to hate her, but really, it didn't mean anything, cuz that isn't utilized at all. The only redeeming and entertainingly interesting character was the android played by Michael Fosbender, and on many occasions, he was the voice of logic from the audience to the other characters, because so often they acted like idiots. This is, however, not to discredit the actors, because they did a good job with what they were given.
What about the other route - the way of the thriller? *Sigh. The humanoid alien looked awesome, and I really wish they had made use of him, but alas. And on the director's side, why on Earth would have have the thrilling part of the movie all the way at the end, when most people would've fallen asleep? Ow yeah, because you also tried to be a philosophical sci-fi at the same time. There are about a total of 5-10 minutes of thrill in the entire film and that's it. and when it is there, for some reason, it is filmed badly. There was probably a completely different cinematographer and camera man for the action scenes, because they were no where near as good as the rest of the films look.
All in all, by the end of the film, you end up questioning why did you watch this, because it feels like there was no point to it. It didn't stimulate your mind with exploration of ideas, and it leaves you very underwhelmed in action.

I loved the movie. Went in not having a clue of what it was or that I was watching anything related to Alien. It was strangely familiar and suddenly when the beast was born it all clicked!
I can tell you, if they somehow could have produced that perspective for everyone, say, they sold it as a completely desperate flick and only upon seeing it did people realize it and the word spread, I promise you, you would have loved it!
Alien was so far out of my mind I couldn't place why it was familiar and honestly wasn't trying until the beast was born and that "Ah-ha!" Moment amazed me and made me a huge fan. Plus the women are unbelievably stunning.

The planet Prometheus took place on was abandoned for I believe they said 20,000 years. So the bioweapon was still the original kind left pure in storage, and the Xeno in the movie is first mutation of its lifeform. Xeno's change over time depending on what lifeform they nest in. So... in the time that planet was abandoned the Engineers could have done way more tests with the weapon creating the Xeno's we now know.

After watching it the second time around, I felt the exact same way as I did the first time. I suppose your first instinct is correct most of the time. Maybe they'll make some sequels that'll tie in the plot holes of Prometheus. If they never make sequels, Prometheus will forever be slow boring movie with plot holes. In case you're reading this Ridley, you've got to admit Prometheus is a mess. We expect better from a legendary director as Ridley Scott has become. Just my opinion.

Actually, the "intriguing" questions the movie leaves in our heads are just the fruits of left overs by script rewrites. They should have just kept the original script. Instead, they just gave us a poor rewrite as a simple horror slash movie with a lot of left over gaps from the original ideas.

I find most of the reviews of this film funny in a way. Most of them are a mixed bag. some hate, some love, but in the end this is the exact same feedback the original Alien received. A lot of people hated that movie mainly for the fact that, like this movie, it almost never answered the questions is posed. But that's whats great about these movies. they force you to answer the questions yourself rather than spoon feeding the answers to you. I would highly recommend Chris stuckman's explainer video to find out more on that.
although unlike most, I actually feel this movie does tie into the original alien. perhaps not directly but the information is all there that points to it. I have a running theory that the planet they are on is the same planet. think about it, when new planets are discovered, the names of existing plants that are nothing more than sequential numbers have to change to accommodate the new planets in sequence. this is why I think in the timeline this planet's number changes and by the time the Nostromo makes it way there its now a higher number in the nomenclature (for those that dont know latin, that means name system.) This is why I think most of what we are seeing is the origin of the xenomorph.

If the film asks a bunch of questions but never resolves them, the movie has a strong lack of focus. If WE are asking questions about the movie it's a different story because things are deliberately kept from us sometimes and that's part of the mystery or interpretation. But if a film doesn't answer it's OWN questions, it's different.

Had a mixed impression though there are things fascinating about it. Hard to believe it came out nearly 10 years ago.
