  • Members of the indigenous community led a Dia de Los Muertos procession at the Santa Monica Pier on Wednesday, November 2, 2022. Aztec dancers dressed in vibrant and colorful costumes led the procession from the west end of the pier to the Merry Go-Round building.
The Santa Monica Pier paid tribute to the cultural tradition of Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, with a two-day public art installation. The event aimed to honor people, places, and ideas that are important to Santa Monicans through free, family-friendly programming.
Presented in partnership with the City of Santa Monica, Pico Youth & Family Center, Mariasol, The Albright, Soda Jerks, and Rusty's, Santa Monica Pier’s Dia de Los Muertos Celebration was a community-oriented space located inside the Merry Go-Round building. Visitors were invited to contribute to the community altar and view the altars made by local artists, Sylvia Sanchez and Daniel Alonso.
The event provided an opportunity for the Santa Monica community to come together and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Dia de Los Muertos. Visitors were able to learn about the history and traditions of the holiday while enjoying the festive atmosphere and vibrant displays.
The Santa Monica Pier's Dia de Los Muertos Celebration was just one of many events held throughout the city to honor the holiday. The event highlighted the city's commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness.

We have to remember we are forgiven and can change. Because each one of us have a soul and free will. To become who we want to become.
