Enjoyed hearing the back in the day story. Back in my day 40 odd years ago, we used the original formula 409 cleaner (before they weakened it) to clean our old Nike ponys.
I, too, use rubbing alcohol to clean my outsoles. I soak them to some detergent first (about 5 mins), scrub, rinse, then apply rubbing alcohol + scrub till they look clean to me.

I always enjoy watching you work on these shoes because when I was growing up, I shined my shoes, always, and still have all my shoe cleaning gear, including polishes, brushes etc.... I mean in High School we wore Penny Loafers and Wing Tips, then the Beatles showed up and we started wearing some Flagg Brothers or Thom McCann Beatle boots or sleaker more Italian looking shoes with Cuban heels but the Ivy league look was still around and Penny loafers and streamlined Wing Tips are still cool today.... LOL ... Nobody wore gym shoes to school back then... I'm an "old timer" now, man time flies Jason.... And by that I mean first the dirty down under and then the rest of the shoe.. In that way I won't be anxious if any dirt slide to the clean shoe.. Just try it once and if you hate it then I will apologize ❤️
Being from Denmark it surprised me, but made me happy when you mentioned Ecco. Have two pair of shoes from them myself. I also use a stiff bristle brush for them with some alcohol and it works really well. Soap works too, but it really depends on the dirt. Usually I find the dirt that comes on the back and front is the hardest to remove, but alcohol works well there.
The one thing that I have found to clean my outsoles of my gucci shoes is using a magic eraser with the same cleaning solution and it works pretty good

They look great! 💖😁👍👍 Back in the day...when I was a teen...I used to use the original Soft Scrub, {as it was still quite new then}, and a toothbrush on my faux leather sneakers. Actually, they may have been real leather but I didn't pay that much attention to what my shoes were made of at that time since my parents had bought them. Anyway, the Soft Scrub worked great and didn't damage my shoes at all! I don't think I would try it on an expensive pair of shoes but cheaper one's is ok. It worked for scuffs on patent leather too but you must make sure you mix a lot of water with the Soft Scrub as it IS quite abrasive and can dull patent leather. It's best used on cheap shoes for a quick, easy and effective cheap cleaner. Note: If anyone tries this because I said it worked great on my shoes...please do so at your OWN risk. Do a tiny patch test first. Just covering my bases! 😉👍

Get a little glass cup, and put some Oxy Clean in it. Then put the laces in the cup while you clean the shoes. Just takes a couple minutes and then you dry the laces on a towel, and a hairdryer if needed. No sense having clean white sneakers with soiled laces.

To remove tar or other thick, sticky petroleum gunk, use a little dab ow lighter fluid on a rag. It usually wipes right off. 😉
